Optically selective, acoustically resonant gas detecting transducer

A gas analyzer is disclosed which responds to the resonant absorption or emission spectrum of a specific gas by producing an acoustic resonance in a chamber containing a sample of that gas, and which measures the amount of that emission or absorption by measuring the strength of that acoustic resonance, e.g., the maximum periodic pressure, velocity or density achieved. In the preferred embodiment, a light beam is modulated periodically at the acoustical resonance frequency of a closed chamber which contains an optically dense sample of the gas of interest. Periodic heating of the absorbing gas by the light beam causes a cyclic expansion, movement, and pressure within the gas. An amplitude is reached where the increased losses were the cyclic radiation energy received. A transducing system is inclined for converting the pressure variations of the resonant gas into electronic readout signals.

Inexpensive portable drug detector

Inexpensive, easy-to-use, self-scanning, self-calibrating, portable unit automatically graphs fluorescence spectrum of drug sample. Device also measures rate of movement through chromatographic column for forensic and medical testing.

Self-calibrating radiometer

Instrument has differential thermocouples that measure temperature on two sides of receiver; one side is heated by absorbed radiation, the other by resistance heater. By measuring energy required to heat back surface, amount of energy absorbed on front may be determined.

Measuring mandibular motions

Mandibular motion along three axes is measured by three motion transducers on floating yoke that rests against mandible. System includes electronics to provide variety of outputs for data display and processing. Head frame is strapped to test subject's skull to provide fixed point of reference for transducers.

Integrated structure vacuum tube

High efficiency, multi-dimensional thin film vacuum tubes suitable for use in high temperature, high radiation environments are described. The tubes are fabricated by placing thin film electrode members in selected arrays on facing interior wall surfaces of an alumina substrate envelope. Cathode members are formed using thin films of triple carbonate. The photoresist used in photolithography aids in activation of the cathodes by carbonizing and reacting with the reduced carbonates when heated in vacuum during forming. The finely powdered triple carbonate is mixed with the photoresist used to delineate the cathode locations in the conventional solid state photolithographic manner. Anode and grid members are formed using thin films of refractory metal. Electron flow in the tubes is between grid elements from cathode to anode as in a conventional three-dimensional tube.

Nulling device for detection of trace gases by NDIR absorption

A nondispersive gas analyzing apparatus is described having a first chamber for containing a first gas, the density of which is determined. A source of radiant energy is provided for passing radiant energy through the first chamber. Modulation means are provided for modulating the radiant energy passing through the first chamber by modulating the volume of the chamber at the acoustic resonance frequency of the first gas and the chamber. Signal generating means, including a second chamber for containing a gas which is heated by radiant energy emerging from the first chamber and a microphonic means responsive to the resulting pressurization in the second chamber, is provided for generating a signal, having a frequency and amplitude corresponding to the modulation of the radiant energy in the first chamber.

Diode-quad bridge circuit means

Diode-quad bridge circuit means is described for use as a transducer circuit or as a discriminator circuit. It includes: (1) a diode bridge having first, second, third, and fourth bridge terminals consecutively coupled together by four diodes polarized in circulating relationship; (2) a first impedance connected between the second bridge terminal and a circuit ground; (3) a second impedance connected between the fourth bridge terminal and the circuit ground; (4) a signal source having a first source terminal capacitively coupled to the first and third bridge terminals, and a second source terminal connected to the circuit ground; and (5) an output terminal coupled to the first bridge terminal and at which an output signal may be taken.

A nondispersive infrared analyzer

Apparatus retains all advantages of prior nondispersive infrared analysis systems and provides significantly more innumity to type of errors that may be introduced by geometric changes in analysis system. Technique also permits construction of instruments of lower weight, smaller volume, and smaller power consumption.

Regulator for intravenous feeding

Float valve maintains constant level of solution, providing constant drop rate as long as solution can flow into patient's vein. Second float valve allows solution to enter vein, but prevents entry of air.

Diode-quad bridge circuit means

A transducer and frequency discriminator circuit is described including a four-terminal circulating diode bridge, a first pair of capacitors connected in series across two terminals of the bridge, and a second pair of capacitors, or other impedance elements, connected in series across the other two terminals of the bridge. A source of balanced alternating electrical energy for energizing the circuit is coupled between the commonly connected plates of the first pair of capacitors and the commonly connected plates of the second pair of capacitors. Due to the operation of the diode bridge, the sum of the resultant charges developed on the first pair of capacitors is proportional to the relationship between the respective capacitors of the second pair, and consequently, an output voltage taken across the first pair of capacitors will be proportional to that relationship.

Integrated structure vacuum tube: A Concept

Chromato-fluorographic drug detector

A drug detecting apparatus which includes a chromatographic system for separating particular substances from a sample solution passed through it is described. A source of radiation causes the substance to emit fluorescent radiation as it moves through the chromatographic system. An optical system spectrally separates the fluorescent radiation according to wavelength and for focusing particular portions of the separated spectrum through an exit aperture. A photodetector which is responsive to the radiation passing through the exit aperture develops an electrical signal commensurate with the intensity of the radiation. The electrical signal is recorded to provide an indication of certain characteristics of the substance.

Modulated hydrogen-ion flame detector: A concept

To improve sensitivity of flame ionization detectors chop flow of sample into flame so resulting ionization will be modulated and therefore readily amplified independently of steady-state background ionization, thermoelectric effects, contact potentials, etc. Detector should discriminate sharply between desired signal and undesired signals.
