Improved format for radiocardiographic data

Technique involves introduction of radioactive sample into antecubital vein. Scintillation crystal mounted in collimating housing views portion of right and left hearts. As radioactive sample passes through heart, counting rate is measured by crystal and recorded on strip chart. Data is insensitive to geometric effects and other parameters.

Diode-quad bridge for reactive transducers and FM discriminators

Diode-quad bridge circuit was developed for use with pressure-sensitive capacitive transducers, liquid-level measuring devices, proximity deflection sensors, and inductive displacement sensors. It may also be used as FM discriminator and as universal impedance bridge.

Redirecting electromagnetic beams through wide angles

Electromagnetic wave enters reflector array consisting of grid work of metallic reflectors with each reflector obscuring a portion of its neighbors to prevent direct passage of wave through grid. Antenna movement involves reduced amplitude of angular motion and internal concellations of translational and rotational inertias.

A simple tachometer circuit

Electric circuit to measure frequency of repetitive sinusoidal or rectangular wave is presented. Components of electric circuit and method of operation are explained. Application of circuit as tachometer for automobile is discussed.

Wide-range dynamic pressure sensor

Transducer measures pressure by sensing the damping of a vibrating diaphragm immersed in the atmosphere to be measured. Improved sensor can be included in rugged, lightweight package for use aboard aircraft, meteorological vehicles, and space probes.

Nondispersive infrared analyzer for specific gases in complex mixtures

Analyzer identifies and measures particular diatomic or polyatomic gases in complex gas mixtures. Mixing of absorption effects on light energy passing through gases to photodetector produces a signal component that is related to the absorption caused by reference-gas component in unknown gas mixture.

Vibrating ribbon bolometer: A concept

Incident electromagnetic radiation pulses maintain bolometer's sensitive element in state of resonant oscillation and correlate amplitude of oscillation with incident radiation power. Bolometer can be employed with other devices for detecting motion of ribbon.

Heterodyne method for high specificity gas detection.

This paper describes a new technique for measuring trace quantities of gases. The technique involves the use of a reference cell (containing a known amount of the gas being sought) and a sample cell (containing an unknown amount of the same gas) wherein the gas densities are modulated. Light passing through the two cells in sequence is modulated in intensity at the vibrational-rotational lines characteristic of the absorption spectrum for the gas of interest. Since the absorption process is nonlinear, modulating the two absorption cells at two different frequencies gives rise to a heterodyning effect, which in turn introduces sum and difference frequencies in the detected signal. Measuring the ratio of the difference frequency signal for example, to the signal introduced by the reference cell provides a normalized measure of the amount of the gas in the sample cell. The readings produced are thereby independent of source intensity, window transparency, and detector sensitivity. Experimental evaluation of the technique suggests that it should be applicable to a wide range of gases, that it should be able to reject spurious signals due to unwanted gases, and that it should be sensitive to concentrations of the order of 10 to the minus 8th power when used with a sample cell of only 20 cm length.

Improved charged-particle analyzer - A concept

Device utilizes concept that charged-particle analysis is achievable by applying sinusoidal voltage across two conductive deflection plates with predetermined curvature and constant spacing to define selective passageway for charged particles to be analyzed. Four advantages of improved device are cited.

Automatic patient respiration failure detection system with wireless transmission

Automatic respiration failure detection system detects respiration failure in patients with a surgically implanted tracheostomy tube, and actuates an audible and/or visual alarm. The system incorporates a miniature radio transmitter so that the patient is unencumbered by wires yet can be monitored from a remote location.

Capacitance-coupled wiper increases potentiometer life

Capacitively-coupled wiper reduces the friction between the sliding contact and the potentiometer element in conventional potentiometers. A small preamplifier employed close to the wiper reduces errors caused by output cable capacitance. The device is friction free with resultant low wear and has high speed and high resolution.
