Automated ac galvanomagnetic measurement system

An automated, ac galvanomagnetic measurement system is described. Hall or van der Pauw measurements in the temperature range 10-300 K can be made at a preselected magnetic field without operator attendance. Procedures to validate sample installation and correct operation of other system functions, such as magnetic field and thermometry, are included. Advantages of ac measurements are discussed.

Performance analysis for collector-side reflector systems

The F-Chart method of solar collector performance evaluation is extended to a flat-plate collector system augmented with planar side reflectors. The modified F-Chart evaluations show that the augmentation of the collector has approximately the effect of increasing the collector area by 60%, and the energy supplied by the collector better matches the load. The installed reflector cost of about 10% of the collector cost is shown to be well justified.

Solar thermal collectors using planar reflector

Specular reflectors have been used successfully with flat-plate collectors to achieve exceptionally high operating temperatures and high delivered energy per unit collector area. Optimal orientation of collectors and reflectors can result in even higher performance with an improved relationship between energy demand and supply. This paper reports on a study providing first order optimization of collector-reflector arrays in which single- and multiple-faceted reflectors in fixed or singly adjustable configurations provide delivered energy maxima in either summer or winter.

Testing of printed circuit board solder joints by optical correlation

An optical correlation technique for the nondestructive evaluation of printed circuit board solder joints was evaluated. Reliable indications of induced stress levels in solder joint lead wires are achievable. Definite relations between the inherent strength of a solder joint, with its associated ability to survive stress, are demonstrable.

High density plasma gun generates plasmas at 190 kilometers per second

Gun has thin metal foil disc which positions or localizes gas to be ionized during electrical discharge cycle, overcoming major limiting factor in obtaining such plasmas. Expanding plasma front travels at 190 km/sec, compared to plasmas of 50 to 60 km/sec previously achieved.
