Metal–Organic Framework-derived Atomic Metal Sites Promoting Sulfur Cathode for All-Solid-State Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

All-solid-state lithium–sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs) offer high energy density and intrinsic safety; however, they still face major challenges, including sluggish redox kinetics and poor sulfur utilization. Incorporating conductive materials into sulfur cathodes is an effective strategy to mitigate these limitations. Here, a highly conductive cobalt–nitrogen–doped carbon (Co–NC) derived from a metal–organic framework (MOF) is introduced to accelerate charge transfer and promote reversible sulfur conversion. Co−NC provides atomically dispersed Co–N sites and conductive carbon pathways that correlate with improved charge transfer, sulfur utilization, and rate capability. Co–NC@S cathode delivers 1499 mAh g–1 at C/20 with a high sulfur loading (5 mg cm–2) and retains 1292 mAh g–1 after five cycles (vs 443 mAh g–1 without Co–NC). Moreover, Co–NC derived ASSLSB achieves 903 mAh g–1 at 5C at 60 °C. This work provides a practical and effective approach to develop high energy, high-rate ASSLSBs.

Development of a near-isothermal transcritical CO 2 compression system with a liquid piston compressor

Compressors are critical components in vapor compression cycle systems, significantly contributing to energy consumption. As global demand for HVAC&R systems rises, enhancing compressor efficiency becomes increasingly vital. This paper introduces a novel liquid piston compressor integrated with a gas cooler for the transcritical CO 2 refrigeration cycle. The liquid piston enables CO 2 refrigerant compression within various types of heat exchangers, facilitating the transfer of compression heat to the heat transfer fluid. By releasing significant heat, this compressor allows for removing or downsizing the traditional gas cooler in the refrigeration system. This paper presents the experimental performance of the first near-isothermal compressor utilizing a liquid piston in a vapor compression cycle. The critical parameters affecting heat transfer are analyzed by using a 1-D simulation model to achieve a near-isothermal compression process. The results show that the developed prototype successfully reduced the compression temperature increase from 95 K to 10 K, achieving 90 % isothermal efficiency. Furthermore, the 1-D simulation results suggest the smaller internal diameter tubes benefit the isothermal efficiency the most.

Shape optimization and fluid control of near isothermal compressor for transcritical carbon dioxide cycle

The compressor holds great promise for enhanced energy efficiency over a wide range of vapor compression systems (VCS). However, the majority of them focused on liquid refrigerant injection or inter-stage cooling technologies to improve heat transfer. Increasing the heat transfer area provides another perspective to promote heat dissipation, which commonly involves shape optimization whilst bringing some limitations, mainly from the manufacturing side. To fill the research gap, this paper compares the performance of isothermal compressors under different compression chamber shapes and chamber connection configurations. Additionally, the fluid control of the liquid piston was combined with shape optimization to explore the potential for further heat transfer enhancement. The simulation results have demonstrated that the COP improvements can reach up to 9% compared with the baseline case by optimizing the chamber shape and properly controlling the liquid piston speed, which provides a guideline for designing and customizing the isothermal compression chamber.

Dynamic Modeling of Near Isothermal Compressor for Transcritical Carbon Dioxide Cycle

Compressors are the major energy consumption components in vapor compression systems, drawing much research effort in reducing carbon emissions. The isothermal compressor integrates the compressor chamber and gas cooler to achieve near isothermal compression, reaching up to 30% energy reduction compared to the traditional isentropic compression work. This paper presents a detailed isothermal compressor model combined with a generalized liquid piston model to account for the carbon dioxide (CO2) isothermal compression process. The model is established based on MATLAB environment. The model uses the real experimental data as boundary conditions and initial settings, which also considers the CO2 solubility in liquid piston (mineral oil) for designing, optimizing and customizing the compression chambers. The validation was carried out with experimental data using a prototype with 3.5 kW capacity. The results have demonstrated the accuracy of the dynamic model (6.2% relative error for chamber pressure and 0.5 K deviation for chamber temperature), which provide a guideline for designing and customizing the isothermal compression cycle.

Cultivation of novel Atribacterota from oil well provides new insight into their diversity, ecology, and evolution in anoxic, carbon-rich environments

Background: The Atribacterota are widely distributed in the subsurface biosphere. Recently, the first Atribacterota isolate was described and the number of Atribacterota genome sequences retrieved from environmental samples has increased significantly; however, their diversity, physiology, ecology, and evolution remain poorly understood. Results: We report the isolation of the second member of Atribacterota, Thermatribacter velox gen. nov., sp. nov., within a new family Thermatribacteraceae fam. nov., and the short-term laboratory cultivation of a member of the JS1 lineage, Phoenicimicrobium oleiphilum HX-OS.bin.34 TS , both from a terrestrial oil reservoir. Physiological and metatranscriptomics analyses showed that Thermatribacter velox B11 T and Phoenicimicrobium oleiphilum HX-OS.bin.34 TS ferment sugars and n-alkanes, respectively, producing H 2 , CO 2 , and acetate as common products. Comparative genomics showed that all members of the Atribacterota lack a complete Wood-Ljungdahl Pathway (WLP), but that the Reductive Glycine Pathway (RGP) is widespread, indicating that the RGP, rather than WLP, is a central hub in Atribacterota metabolism. Ancestral character state reconstructions and phylogenetic analyses showed that key genes encoding the RGP (fdhA, fhs, folD, glyA, gcvT, gcvPAB, pdhD) and other central functions were gained independently in the two classes, Atribacteria (OP9) and Phoenicimicrobiia (JS1), after which they were inherited vertically; these genes included fumarate-adding enzymes (faeA; Phoenicimicrobiia only), the CODH/ACS complex (acsABCDE), and diverse hydrogenases (NiFe group 3b, 4b and FeFe group A3, C). Finally, we present genome-resolved community metabolic models showing the central roles of Atribacteria (OP9) and Phoenicimicrobiia (JS1) in acetate- and hydrocarbon-rich environments. Conclusion: Our findings expand the knowledge of the diversity, physiology, ecology, and evolution of the phylum Atribacterota. This study is a starting point for promoting more incisive studies of their syntrophic biology and may guide the rational design of strategies to cultivate them in the laboratory.

Ultrathin Ruthenium Films on Graphene Buffered SiO 2 via Quasi Van der Waals Epitaxy

In this study, we demonstrate a quasi van der Waals epitaxy approach to prepare single crystalline Ru ultrathin film on large scale, monolayer graphene. Physical and epitaxial properties of bulk, near surface and surface of ultrathin Ru films were comprehensively studied using various structural, morphological, compositional, and electrical characterization techniques. Here, we confirm that Ru can epitaxially grow on single, monolayer graphene using magnetron sputtering at elevated temperature of 600 °C. The epitaxial Ru films with film thickness ranging from 94.2 nm down to 3.9 nm show the (0001) out-of-plane orientation. The epitaxial relationships between Ru and graphene are out-of-plane Ru(0001) || graphene(0001) and in-plane Ru[$11\bar20$] || graphene[$11\bar20$]. All the Ru films show smooth surfaces with root-mean-square roughness less than 0.8 nm and have negligible oxide layer on the surfaces. The Ru films on graphene demonstrate significantly reduced electrical resistivity comparing to their counterpart grown on bare SiO 2 , which show polycrystalline nature. For 7.1 to 3.9 nm film thicknesses, the resistivity of Ru on graphene shows 38 to 45% resistivity decrease from that of Ru film on bare SiO 2 without graphene. Our observations suggest the existence of the above-classical van der Waals interaction between Ru and graphene. On the other hand, graphene is capable of effectively blocking the inter-diffusion/interaction between Ru and SiO 2 during a 1000 °C annealing process.

Joint Inversion of Body Wave Arrival Times, Surface Wave Dispersion Data and Receiver Functions: Method and Application to South China

In this work, we have developed a new joint inversion method that incorporates body wave arrival times, surface wave dispersion and receiver functions to simultaneously update earthquake locations and constrain three-dimensional P-wave (Vp) and S-wave velocity (Vs) models. Due to complementary sensitivities of the three types of data, the proposed joint inversion algorithm can reduce the intrinsic non-uniqueness of inversions using fewer types of data and better determine smooth velocity variations and velocity discontinuities. Synthetic tests demonstrate the advantages of this new joint inversion algorithm in resolving velocity structures, especially in constraining velocity gradients across the Moho interface. We have applied the proposed joint inversion algorithm to image the lithosphere velocity structure of south China. The inverted Vp and Vs models fit body wave arrival times, surface wave dispersion and receiver functions well. We further analyzed the distribution of Vs gradients across the Moho interface in detail, which helps us better understand tectonics in south China.

A Generic Sacrificial Layer for Wide-Range Freestanding Oxides with Modulated Magnetic Anisotropy

Freestanding oxide nanomembranes have promising applications because of their novel electronic states and flexible crystalline structures. Several materials have been developed as sacrificial layers to exfoliate thin films from substrates via wet-etching. However, these materials face great challenges in terms of either complicated crystalline structures or corrosive solutions. Herein, a new sacrificial material, SrCoO 2.5 , is presented, which can be coherently grown with wide-range strains and crystalline orientations and is also soluble in eco-friendly solutions such as acetic acid, vinegar, and even carbonated drinks. With SrCoO 2.5 as the sacrificial layer, high-quality freestanding ferromagnetic SrRuO 3 membranes are achieved from wide-range epitaxial strains and different crystalline orientations. By investigating the evolution of the magnetic properties of these samples, it is discovered that epitaxial strain causes a distinct modification of the magnetic anisotropy of (001) pc -oriented SrRuO 3 samples, while its influence on the (110) pc and (111) pc samples is insignificant. This study not only demonstrates the freestanding SrRuO 3 as a promising material for flexible spintronic devices, but also offers a great opportunity to engineer a wide range of strained and oriented complex oxides for novel freestanding electronics using this newly developed sacrificial material.

Possible Topological Hall Effect above Room Temperature in Layered Cr 1.2 Te 2 Ferromagnet

Topological Hall effect (THE) has been used as a powerful tool to unlock spin chirality in novel magnetic materials. Recent focus has been widely paid to THE and possible chiral spin textures in two-dimensional (2D) layered magnetic materials. However, the room-temperature THE has been barely reported in 2D materials, which hinders its practical applications in 2D spintronics. In this paper, we report a possible THE signal featuring antisymmetric peaks in a wide temperature window up to 320 K in Cr 1.2 Te 2 , a new quasi-2D ferromagnetic material. The temperature, thickness, and magnetic field dependences of the THE lead to potential spin chirality origin that is associated with the spin canting under external magnetic fields. Furthermore, our work holds promise for practical applications in future chiral spin-based vdW spintronic devices.
