New formation and fate of Isoprene SOA markers revealed by field data-constrained modeling

Particulate 2-methyltetrols (2-MT) and 2-methylglyceric acid (2-MG) are typically used to indicate the abundance of isoprene-derived secondary organic aerosols (SOA). However, their formation and fate are not fully understood. In this study, we showed that particulate 2-MT and 2-MG collected at multiple monitoring sites under a wide range of atmospheric and emission conditions, with concentrations spanning six orders of magnitudes, are well reproduced with an expanded isoprene-SOA scheme implemented into the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. The scheme considers their three-phase (gas-aqueous-organic phase) partitioning, formation from acid-driven multiphase reactions, and degradation by OH radicals in the gas and aqueous phases. The model results reveal that a non-aqueous formation pathway or direct biogenic emission is needed to supplement the commonly assumed acid-driven multiphase reaction process to explain the observed 2-MT concentrations. This missing pathway contributes to 20–40% of 2-MT in areas with aerosol pH < 2 and more than 70% under less acidic conditions (pH~2–5), such as those encountered in the western US and China. The typical summertime gas-phase photochemical lifetimes of 2-MT and 2-MG are estimated to be 4–6 and 20–30 h, respectively, and their aqueous lifetimes are approximately 20–40 h. Our simulations show that predicted 2-MT is mainly influenced by its aqueous phase loss to OH, but 2-MG is more sensitive to gas phase OH loss due to the preferential partitioning of the two tracers in the aqueous and gas phases, respectively.

Carbonate Minerals and Dissimilatory Iron-Reducing Organisms Trigger Synergistic Abiotic and Biotic Chain Reactions under Elevated CO 2 Concentration

Increasing CO 2 emission has resulted in pressing climate and environmental issues. While abiotic and biotic processes mediating the fate of CO 2 have been studied separately, their interactions and combined effects have been poorly understood. To explore this knowledge gap, an iron-reducing organism, Orenia metallireducens, was cultured under 18 conditions that systematically varied in headspace CO 2 concentrations, ferric oxide loading, and dolomite (CaMg(CO 3 ) 2 ) availability. The results showed that abiotic and biotic processes interactively mediate CO 2 acidification and sequestration through "chain reactions", with pH being the dominant variable. Specifically, dolomite alleviated CO 2 stress on microbial activity, possibly via pH control that transforms the inhibitory CO 2 to the more benign bicarbonate species. The microbial iron reduction further impacted pH via the competition between proton (H + ) consumption during iron reduction and H + generation from oxidization of the organic substrate. Under Fe(III)-rich conditions, microbial iron reduction increased pH, driving dissolved CO 2 to form bicarbonate. Spectroscopic and microscopic analyses showed enhanced formation of siderite (FeCO 3 ) under elevated CO 2 , supporting its incorporation into solids. In conclusion, the results of these CO 2 -microbe-mineral experiments provide insights into the synergistic abiotic and biotic processes that alleviate CO 2 acidification and favor its sequestration, which can be instructive for practical applications (e.g., acidification remediation, CO 2 sequestration, and modeling of carbon flux).

Towards complete assignment of the infrared spectrum of the protonated water cluster H + (H 2 O) 21

The spectroscopic features of protonated water species in dilute acid solutions have been long sought after for understanding the microscopic behavior of the proton in water with gas-phase water clusters H + (H 2 O) n extensively studied as bottom-up model systems. We present a new protocol for the calculation of the infrared (IR) spectra of complex systems, which combines the fragment-based Coupled Cluster method and anharmonic vibrational quasi-degenerate perturbation theory, and demonstrate its accuracy towards the complete and accurate assignment of the IR spectrum of the H + (H 2 O) 21 cluster. The site-specific IR spectral signatures reveal two distinct structures for the internal and surface four-coordinated water molecules, which are ice-like and liquid-like, respectively. The effect of inter-molecular interaction between water molecules is addressed, and the vibrational resonance is found between the O-H stretching fundamental and the bending overtone of the nearest neighboring water molecule. The revelation of the spectral signature of the excess proton offers deeper insight into the nature of charge accommodation in the extended hydrogen-bonding network underpinning this aqueous cluster.

Comparative study of Minnesota functionals performance on ferroelectric BaTiO 3 and PbTiO 3

Density functional theory based simulations are the leading tool for the computational investigation of ferroelectrics and the parametrization of their classical potentials. However, the predictions often depend strongly on the exchange correlation functional. The most popular choices, LDA and GGA, tend to underestimate or overestimate some structural, electric, and energy properties. These impede development of highly accurate classical potentials that extend the reach of first-principles simulations to finite temperatures and realistic sizes. In this work, we investigate the performance of recently developed Minnesota exchange correlation functionals on prototypical ferroelectrics BaTiO 3 , and PbTiO 3 , in comparison with some popular ones. We find that there exists strong correlation between predictions for some properties (tetragonality, phase energy difference, and polarization) by different functionals. Along the correlation line, we find a range of functionals (including some from the Minnesota suite) whose predictions fall in between those of LDA and GGA and, therefore, offer an improvement. A way to relatively rank functional performance with respect to chosen benchmarks is proposed and applied to identify the top performers for BaTiO 3 and PbTiO 3 . Here, the performance is found to be material dependent. Therefore, we propose that the performance assessment carried out in this work is employed to "screen" functionals prior to their use on ferroelectrics. Quick and computationally inexpensive, it is likely to lead to improved descriptions, especially for classical potential parametrization. The Minnesota functional suite is found to be suitable for this task.

M06-SX screened-exchange density functional for chemistry and solid-state physics

Significance Density functionals with Hartree–Fock exchange have been widely used for a wide range of chemical applications, but the nonlocal character of exchange makes long-range exchange computationally expensive for solid-state calculations with periodic boundary conditions, and full exchange is nonphysical for condensed-phase systems. Here, we present a screened-exchange (SX) density functional, M06-SX, that is especially designed to have good accuracy for both solid-state physics and chemical applications with less computational cost than full Hartree–Fock exchange. The M06-SX functional gives accuracy comparable to functionals with full Hartree–Fock exchange for predicting chemical properties of molecules, while also being practical with good accuracy for plane wave calculations on band gaps and lattice constants of solids.
