Capability Demonstration of a 3D CdZnTe Detector on a High-Altitude Balloon Flight

In collaboration between the University of Michigan and Los Alamos National Laboratory, a 3D position-sensing CdZnTe (CZT) detector prototype was built and integrated into a high-altitude balloon platform to evaluate its performance in a space-like mixed-radiation environment. The detector prototype, Orion Eagle, was designed to operate in near-vacuum environments without any temperature regulation. Orion Eagle was hand-launched from NASA’s Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility (CSBF) at Fort Sumner, NM on September 26, 2021, and successfully operated throughout a 9-hour flight, which reached 38.5 km in altitude. The flight met its objectives, successfully detecting atmospheric gamma rays and galactic cosmic rays, and raising the Technical Readiness Level from 4 to 6 for large-volume 3D CZT detector technology for space applications. Ionization tracks produced by charged particles create spatial signatures in the detector that are distinguishable from discrete gamma-ray interactions. Therefore, the 3D position-sensing capabilities using pixelated electrodes on a CZT detector can help enable discrimination of background charged particles from gamma-ray events without an anticoincidence shield. The potential for background rejection capability, ambient-temperature operation, gamma-ray coded-aperture and Compton imaging, and near High Purity Germanium (HPGe) energy resolution motivate the use of large-volume 3D CZT imaging spectrometers in future space missions.

Filtered Backprojection in Compton Imaging using a Spherical Harmonic Wiener Filter with Pixelated CdZnTe

Filtered backprojection is an image reconstruction technique for Compton imaging that provides reasonably high resolution at much lower computational costs when compared to iterative methods. Here, this work applies a Wiener filter that has been derived for spherical harmonics on Compton imaging using the OrionUM pixelated CdZnTe imaging-spectrometer. To regularize the filter, an investigation is made into the power spectral density of the signal and noise to develop an appropriate spectral signal-to-noise ratio model for the restoration process. Experimental measurements were conducted with two 228Th sources placed 30° apart. The resulting filtered image of the two sources have an average full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) of 9.8° or 7.5° when using a mean squared error and structural similarity optimization approach respectively; an improvement from the 29.0° FWHM image when using simple backprojection.

CsPbBr3 perovskite detectors with 1.4% energy resolution for high-energy γ-rays

Halide perovskite semiconductors are poised to revitalize the field of ionizing radiation detection as they have done to solar photovoltaics. We show that all-inorganic perovskite CsPbBr 3 devices resolve 137 Cs 662-keV γ-rays with 1.4% energy resolution, as well as other X- and γ-rays with energies ranging from tens of keV to over 1 MeV in ambipolar sensing and unipolar hole-only sensing modes with crystal volumes of 6.65 mm 3 and 297 mm 3 , respectively. Furthermore, we report the scale-up of CsPbBr 3 ingots to up to 1.5 inches in diameter with an excellent hole mobility–lifetime product of 8 × 10 -3 cm 2 V -1 and a long hole lifetime of up to 296 μs. CsPbBr 3 detectors demonstrate a wide temperature region from ~2 °C to ~70 °C for stable operation. Detectors protected with suitable encapsulants show a uniform response for over 18 months. Consequently, we identify perovskite CsPbBr 3 semiconductor as an exceptional candidate for new-generation high-energy γ-ray detection.
