Status of high-temperature laminating resins and adhesives

High-temperature polymers now being developed as adhesives and composite matrices are reviewed, including aromatic polyimides, polybenzimidazoles, polyphenylquinoxalines, nadic end-capped imide oligomers, maleimide end-capped oligomers, and acetylene-terminated imide oligomers. The mechanical properties of laminates based on these resins are reported together with preliminary test results on the adhesive properties for titanium-to-titanium and composite-to-composite lap shear specimens.

New cyanate and cyanamide resins as composite matrices

The synthesis, polymerization, and laminate properties of two dicyanates, copolymers thereof, and a dicyanamide were studied. The effect of humidity aging (322 K (49 C), 95% relative humidity) and also aging at 505 K (232 C) in circulating air on the RT and elevated temperature properties of HT-S and T-300 unidirectional laminates was determined.

High temperature composite bonding with PPQ

A polyphenylquinoxaline (PPQ) was evaluated as a high temperature adhesive for joining polyimide graphite laminates (PI/Gr) to PI/Gr, PI/Gr to titanium (Ti), and Ti to Ti. The effect of polymer molecular weight, processing parameters, 3-day water boil, and 316 C (600 F) aging in air upon lap shear strengths is presented. Titanium to Ti climbing drum peel and PI/Gr to polyimide glass honeycomb flatwise tensile strengths are also presented.

Development of polyphenylquinoxaline graphite composites

The potential of polyphenylquinoxaline (PPQ)/graphite composites to serve as structural material at 316 C (600 F)has been demonstrated using a block copolymer, BlCo(13), PPQ derivative. Initially, thirteen polyphenylquinoxalines were evaluated. From this work, four candidate polymers were selected for preliminary evaluation as matrices for HMS graphite fiber reinforced composites. The preliminary composite evaluation enabled selection of one of the four polymers for advanced composite preparation and testing. Using an experimentally established cure schedule for each of the four polymers, preliminary laminates of 50% resin volume content, prepared without postcure, were tested for flexure strength and modulus, interlaminar shear strength (short beam), and tensile strength and modulus at ambient temperature. A block copolymer (Bl Co 13) derived from one mole p-bis (phenylglyoxalyl) benzene, one fourth mole 3,3'-diaminobenzidine and three-fourths mole 3,3', 4,4'-tetraminobenzophenone was selected for extensive study. Tensile, flexural, and interlaminar shear values were obtained after aging and testing postcured BlCo(13) laminates at 316 C (600 F). The potential of PPQ/graphite laminates to serve as short term structural materials at temperatures up to 371 C (700 F) was demonstrated through weight loss experiments.

Phenylquinoxaline copolymers

The preparation of a series of homopolymers and block and random type phenylquinoxaline copolymers is described together with their important characteristics and preliminary measurements of composite properties. Phenylquinoxaline homopolymers consisting of low, intermediate, and high molecular weight versions were prepared from the reaction of 3,3'-diaminobenzidine (DAB) and 3,3',4,4'-tetraaminobenzophenone (TAB), each with p-bis(phenylglyoxalyl)benzene as solutions (18% solids content) in a 1:1 mixture of m-cresol and xylene. Three random and three block copolymers were prepared from the reaction of various amounts of DAB and TAB with p-bis(phenylglyoxalyl)benzene. The copolymers were prepared with DAB to TAB distribution ratios of 3:1, 1:1, and 1:3. The work was performed primarily to determine if phenylquinoxaline copolymers exhibit any advantage over the homopolymers for use as functional or structural resins, especially as a matrix material in combination with a high-modulus graphite fiber reinforcement.

Development of space stable semitransparent polyquinoxaline films

Three polyphenylquinoxalines underwent preliminary study for potential use as coatings on aircraft and spacecraft. These polymers were prepared from the reaction of 3,3 prime, 4,4 prime-tetraaminodiphenyl ether with p,p prime-oxydibenzil and with m -bis (phenylglyoxalyl) benzene and from the reaction of 3,3 prime, 4,4 prime-tetraaminodiphenylsulfone with p,p prime-oxydibenzil. High purity reactants and solvents were used in polymer preparation to minimize color in the polymer films. High molecular weight polymers were prepared at ambient temperature at 12 to 15 percent concentration by upsetting the stoichiometry by 0.5 to 1.0 percent in favor of the bis (1,2-dicarbonyl) reactant. A portion of each polymer was endcapped with benzil and with o-phenylenediamine. Certain properties of the endcapped and unendcapped versions of each polymer are compared. Uniform films of 2.0 and 0.1 mil thickness were cast from solutions of the unendcapped and endcapped versions of each of the three polymers.
