Study of Tritium Diffusivity in Pure and Sn-Defective Zr: A First-Principles Density Functional Theory Approach

Zirconium alloys (e.g., zircaloy-4) are used as tritium ( 3 H) getter materials in tritium-producing burnable absorber rods (TPBARs) owing to their ability to capture 3 H and chemically convert them into metal hydrides. Understanding of 3 H diffusion mechanisms in zircaloy is crucial for the optimal design of material performance in nuclear technology. Here, for this work, we perform first-principles density functional theory calculations to study the 3 H diffusion mechanism in pure and impure Zr with a low concentration of tin (Sn) atoms to determine the impact of the presence of Sn on the movement of 3 H atoms through the material. First, we calculated the diffusion barriers for 3 H in pure Zr by taking different migration pathways. We then introduced a low concentration of Sn impurity and systematically explored the impurity effect on the diffusion barriers for 3 H. Using our calculated diffusion energy barriers, we further obtained the diffusion coefficients and analyzed the results by comparing them with the experimental and previously calculated values. A diffusion coefficient of the order of 10 –8 m 2 /s is predicted. We also found that the presence of a Sn impurity could reduce the diffusivity up to 4 orders of magnitude. In conclusion, our results could serve as guidelines for further experimental investigations.

Effect of Multiple Oxygen Vacancies on the Optical and Thermodynamic Properties of La 0.75 Sr 0.25 Co 0.25 Fe 0.75 O 3-δ Perovskite

We report the oxygen vacancy concentration of perovskite changes with the work condition in applications such as oxygen carriers and oxygen sensors. To explore the effect of multiple oxygen vacancies on the optical and thermodynamic properties, we perform first-principles calculations to investigate the formation of multiple oxygen vacancies in the paramagnetic La 0.75 Sr 0.25 Co 0.25 Fe 0.75 O 3-δ . Our results show that the higher VO concentration in La 0.75 Sr 0.25 Co 0.25 Fe 0.75 O 3-δ occurs at the conditions of higher temperatures and lower oxygen partial pressures. The electrons liberated upon oxygen vacancy formation are partially localized on the nearby Fe/Co sites and partially delocalized through the lattice, with the result that the unoccupied Fe/Co states near the Fermi level decrease and the Fermi level shows an upward shift. From the results of optical absorption, the peaks from 250 to 600 nm are weakened and blue-shifted with increase of oxygen vacancy concentration, due to the decrease of empty Fe states and an upward shift of the Fermi level. The obvious change of optical absorption with oxygen vacancy concentration indicates that La 0.75 Sr 0.25 Co 0.25 Fe 0.75 O 3-δ could be a good candidate for optical oxygen sensors in the visible spectrum.

Tritium diffusion and formation in the bulk and defective surface of γ-LiAlO2 pellets: First-principles investigation

In tritium-producing burnable absorber rods (TPBAR), γ-LiAlO2 is used in the form of an annular ceramic pellet enriched with the 6Li isotope. When irradiated in a pressurized water reactor (PWR), the 6Li pellets absorb neutrons and produce tritium (3H) through 6Li + n 3H + α. The 3H chemically reacts with the metal getter where it is captured and leads to formation of a metal hydride. For TPBARs to enable effective tritium production in PWRs, we investigated the 3H diffusion pathways in the bulk and surface of γ-LiAlO2 with different concentrations of lithium defects. The calculated results for bulk and low-index surfaces, thermal conductivity, 3H activation energy barriers, and the 3H diffusion coefficients in γ-LiAlO2 are in good agreement with the available experimental values. In the bulk, our results show that the smallest activation energy barrier is 0.63 eV for substitutional 3H diffusion with a diffusion coefficient of 3.25x10-12 m2/s. After 3H diffused from bulk to the surface, it could form different species (such as 3H2, 3H2O, C3H4) depending on the surface structure, vacancy types and the impurity carbon. Our results indicate that the 3H2 is the main product from γ-LiAlO2 pellets. As the number of VLi vacancies and 3H atoms increases under irradiation (3H-rich condition), 3H2O release could increase from the surface of γ-LiAlO2 pellets.

First-principles studies of the concentration-dependent tritium diffusion in the zirconium hydrides with and without Sn impurity

We performed first-principles calculations to study the 3 H diffusion in the zirconium hydrides with or without Sn impurity. Our results show that the formation of Zr 3 H x becomes preferable as the 3 H concentration increases. Based on the most stable configurations of Zr 3 H x (x = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0), we studied the interstitial 3 H diffusion with or without Sn impurity. The results show that the interstitial 3 H diffusion becomes less probable in the hydrides with a higher 3 H concentration. When introducing a substitutional Sn impurity, the diffusion barriers increase. Therefore, the substitutional Sn in the diffusion pathway hampers the 3 H diffusion in Zr hydrides.

Fundamental Studies of Tritium Formation and Diffusivity in Pure and Defective Zircaloy-4 Getters

Zirconium (Zr) and its alloys are used as fuel cladding in nuclear reactors. These materials have their low absorption cross-section for thermal neutrons and have good mechanical and thermal properties. In addition, they are used as tritium getters in tritium-producing burnable absorber rods (TPBARs), in the form of nickel-plated Zircaloy-4 tubes. To produce 3 H, the breading blankets such as lithium aluminate are irradiated in pressurized water. 3 H produced in this process is captured by the getter and 3 H reacts chemically with Zr to form metal hydride (ZrTx). The precipitation of metal hydride results in not only the volume increase and hydrogen embrittlement of zircaloy but also changes in getter’s chemical properties. This degrades the getter’s performance. Therefore, understanding the behavior of 3 H (such as diffusion and solubility) in zircaloy is important to understand getter performance.

Nickel B-site substitution in bulk Sr 1-x Ca x FeO 3 perovskite oxygen carriers: Benefits and limitations

We report oxygen (O 2 ) storage materials often rely on the presence of cobalt (Co) to reduce the thermodynamic penalty and increase the kinetics necessary for efficient O 2 storage and release. In this work, we investigate nickel (Ni) as an alternative B-site dopant in Sr 1-x Ca x FeO 3 to identify Co-free carriers that still show improved kinetics at low temperatures. In fact, we show a substantial increase in the reversible O2 release rate through mild Ni B-site substitution (y = 0.06) in select Sr 1-x Ca x Fe 1-y Ni y O 3 systems at 400 to 500 °C, reaching 2.00 wt.% O 2 release up to approximately 75% faster than Ni-free systems. To explain the role of Ni in these systems, we use density functional theory to calculate the O 2 vacancy (V O ) formation energy from separate metal-oxygen (M-O) bonding and relaxation components. We computationally show elongated Ni-O bonds are directly responsible for the decrease in V O upon Ni substitution.

First-principles study of the surface properties of LiAl 5 O 8 : Stability and tritiated water formation

LiAl 5 O 8 is an important secondary phase of γ-LiAlO 2 ceramics in tritium ( 3 H, T)-producing burnable absorber rods (TPBARs), present in small quantities in the as-fabricated condition and in larger quantities after irradiation due to Li burnup and mobility in the radiation-damaged lattice. In this work, we performed first-principles calculations to study the stabilities and structures of LiAl 5 O 8 surfaces the possibility of T 2 O formation on the (111) surface. By calculating the surface energies of all possible symmetrical stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric low-index surfaces, we identified the two most stable surfaces, one stoichiometric (001) surface and one nonstoichiometric (111) surface in an O-rich condition. The surface oxygen atoms on the nonstoichiometric (111) surface have remarkable displacements after relaxation, due to the large dangling O bonds. Considering a Li-poor and 3 H-rich condition relevant to TPBARs, we further studied these two stable surfaces with 37.5%, 75%, and 100% surface O atoms covered by 3 H atoms. Our results show that the 3H saturation is favorable for the nonstoichiometric (111) surface but not for the stoichiometric (001) surface. In addition, the structure of nonstoichiometric (111) surface is well stabilized when the surface O atoms are 100% saturated by 3 H atoms. Based on the fully 3H-saturated (111) surface, the 3 H 2 O desorption with an energy barrier of 0.69 eV is preferable in the 3 H-rich condition.

Fundamental Studies of Tritium Formation and Diffusivity in Pure and Defective Zircaloy-4 Getters

Zirconium (Zr) alloys have excellent mechanical properties at high temperature and are resistant to corrosion in different environmental conditions. These alloys are used as tritium (3H or T) getters in nuclear reactors due to their low absorption cross section to thermal neutrons and excellent thermo-mechanical properties. Zr alloys have better mechanical and thermal properties than many other refractory alloys including stainless steel. After the irradiation of TPBAR by neutron flux, 3H produced during irradiation diffuses though the pellets and is captured by the getter. 3H chemically reacts with Zr metal to form metal hydride (ZrTx). Hydrides thus formed are brittle and adversely affect the mechanical and thermal properties of alloys. The lattice mismatch at the interface of alloy and metal hydrides also creates a stress that significantly reduces the alloy’s performance and operation life. Therefore, understanding the behavior of 3H and its species becomes significant as fuel burnup is increased, which leads to increase in hydrogen pickup and oxide formation.

Effects of Site and Magnetic Disorder on the Oxygen Vacancy Formation and Electronic and Optical Properties of La x Sr 1– x CoO 3–δ and SrFe y Co 1– y O 3–δ [plus supplemental information]

Disorder is an inevitable issue in practical applications of perovskites with the A-site occupied by La/Sr and the B-site occupied by Co/Fe. We performed density functional theory calculations to reveal the site and magnetic disorder effect on the oxygen vacancy formation and the electronic and optical properties of La x Sr 1–x CoO 3–δ and SrFe y Co 1–y O 3–δ systems. Generally, site disorder has little influence on the physical properties we studied, while magnetic disorder has a property-dependent effect for La A-site and Fe B-site doping of SrCoO 3 . Compared to ordered ferromagnetic (FM) calculations, disordered paramagnetic (PM) results can better describe the high-temperature behavior of lattice expansion and the multiple spin states of Co ions in La x Sr 1–x CoO 3 . The oxygen vacancy formation energy results show that the magnetic disorder has a more remarkable effect on SrFe y Co 1–y O 3–δ systems with a robust magnetic order than that on the La x Sr 1–x CoO 3–δ systems with a fragile magnetic order. The electronic structures in the PM phase have less spin polarization and broadened bands, by which the optical absorptions from the single spin channel transition in the FM phase have an obvious change in the magnitude and/or the trend. Furthermore, our work provides guidance for where and why to consider the disorder.

First-principles Studies of Tritium Species Formation on and Desorption from Surfaces of $γ- LiAlO_2$ Pellets with Related Secondary Phase

The $γ- LiAlO_2$ ceramics enriched with the $^6Li$ isotope are used in the form of annular pellets in tritium-producing burnable absorber rods (TPBARs). When irradiated in a pressurized water reactor (PWR), the $^6Li$ absorbs neutrons, simulating the nuclear characteristics of a burnable absorber rod, and produces tritium $(_{1}^{3}H, T)$. Once the $_{1}^{3}H$ is produced in the bulk of $γ- LiAlO_2$, it diffuses to its surface, forming different $_{1}^{3}H$ species (possibly $T, OT, T_2, or T_2O$). The $T_2O$ is expected to be generated from experiment, to avoid $_{1}^{3}H$ leakage. However, up to now, it is still not clear which $_{1}^{3}H$ species are formed on the $γ- LiAlO_2$ surface and travel to the getter. Besides, with the dramatic Li loss under irradiation, the secondary phase (possibly $LiAl_5O_8$) precipitates and participates into the $_{1}^{3}H$ diffusivity and $_{1}^{3}H$ species formation. Therefore, exploring $_{1}^{3}H$ species formation on and desorption from surfaces of $γ- LiAlO_2$ with related secondary phases becomes a very important task to provide a better understanding of $_{1}^{3}H$H species escaping from pellets.
