Correlation Techniques as Applied to Pose Estimation in Space Station Docking

The telerobotic assembly of space-station components has become the method of choice for the International Space Station (ISS) because it offers a safe alternative to the more hazardous option of space walks. The disadvantage of telerobotic assembly is that it does not provide for direct arbitrary views of mating interfaces for the teleoperator. Unless cameras are present very close to the interface positions, such views must be generated graphically, based on calculated pose relationships derived from images. To assist in this photogrammetric pose estimation, circular targets, or spots, of high contrast have been affixed on each connecting module at carefully surveyed positions. The appearance of a subset of spots essentially must form a constellation of specific relative positions in the incoming digital image stream in order for the docking to proceed. Spot positions are expressed in terms of their apparent centroids in an image. The precision of centroid estimation is required to be as fine as 1I20th pixel, in some cases. This paper presents an approach to spot centroid estimation using cross correlation between spot images and synthetic spot models of precise centration. Techniques for obtaining sub-pixel accuracy and for shadow, obscuration and lighting irregularity compensation are discussed.

Advances in Full-Face, Full-Complex SLM Characterization

If an optical correlator is to perform at full potential, the filtersrnith must know what complex action will result from the control he applies to the filter Spatial Light Modulator (SLM). If the SLM is spatially variant (and all are, to some degree or other), the behavior may be different at every frequency plane pixel. We have previously reported characterization of the full-complex behavior at every pixel of an SLM. We have refined the method in two distinct ways: we are doing multi-step interferometry (rather than only phase quadrature), and we have significantly improved the isolation of an individual pixel's complex action. We show the methods and results.

Method and Apparatus for Improved Spatial Light Modulation

A method and apparatus for modulating a light beam in an optical processing system is described. Preferably, an electrically-controlled polarizer unit and/or an analyzer unit are utilized in combination with a spatial light modulator and a controller. Preferably, the spatial light modulator comprises a pixelated birefringent medium such as a liquid crystal video display. The combination of the electrically controlled polarizer unit and analyzer unit make it simple and fast to reconfigure the modulation described by the Jones matrix of the spatial light modulator. A particular optical processing objective is provided to the controller. The controller performs calculations and supplies control signals to the polarizer unit, the analyzer unit, and the spatial light modulator in order to obtain the optical processing objective.

Optimal Fisher Discriminant Ratio for an Arbitrary Spatial Light Modulator

Optimizing the Fisher ratio is well established in statistical pattern recognition as a means of discriminating between classes. I show how to optimize that ratio for optical correlation intensity by choice of filter on an arbitrary spatial light modulator (SLM). I include the case of additive noise of known power spectral density.

Patterned Video Sensors For Low Vision

Miniature video cameras containing photoreceptors arranged in prescribed non-Cartesian patterns to compensate partly for some visual defects proposed. Cameras, accompanied by (and possibly integrated with) miniature head-mounted video display units restore some visual function in humans whose visual fields reduced by defects like retinitis pigmentosa.

Dual Use of Image Based Tracking Techniques: Laser Eye Surgery and Low Vision Prosthesis

With a concentration on Fourier optics pattern recognition, we have developed several methods of tracking objects in dynamic imagery to automate certain space applications such as orbital rendezvous and spacecraft capture, or planetary landing. We are developing two of these techniques for Earth applications in real-time medical image processing. The first is warping of a video image, developed to evoke shift invariance to scale and rotation in correlation pattern recognition. The technology is being applied to compensation for certain field defects in low vision humans. The second is using the optical joint Fourier transform to track the translation of unmodeled scenes. Developed as an image fixation tool to assist in calculating shape from motion, it is being applied to tracking motions of the eyeball quickly enough to keep a laser photocoagulation spot fixed on the retina, thus avoiding collateral damage.

Optimal realizable filters and the minimum Euclidean distance principle

Minimizing a Euclidean distance in the complex plane optimizes a wide class of correlation metrics for filters implemented on realistic devices. The algorithm searches over no more than two real scalars (gain and phase). It unifies a variety of previous solutions for special cases (e.g., a maximum signal-to-noise ratio with colored noise and a real filter and a maximum correlation intensity with no noise and a coupled filter). It extends optimal partial information filter theory to arbitrary spatial light modulators (fully complex, coupled, discrete, finite contrast ratio, and so forth), additive input noise (white or colored), spatially nonuniform filter modulators, and additive correlation detection noise (including signal dependent noise).

Design of a reading test for low vision image warping

NASA and the University of Houston College of Optometry are examining the efficacy of image warping as a possible prosthesis for at least two forms of low vision - maculopathy and retinitis pigmentosa. Before incurring the expense of reducing the concept to practice, one would wish to have confidence that a worthwhile improvement in visual function would result. NASA's Programmable Remapper (PR) can warp an input image onto arbitrary geometric coordinate systems at full video rate, and it has recently been upgraded to accept computer-generated video text. We have integrated the Remapper with an SRI eye tracker to simulate visual malfunction in normal observers. A reading performance test has been developed to determine if the proposed warpings yield an increase in visual function; i.e., reading speed. We will describe the preliminary experimental results of this reading test with a simulated central field defect with and without remapped images.

Optimal filters - A unified approach for SNR and PCE

A unified approach for a general metric that encompasses both the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the peak-to-correlation (PCE) ratio in optical correlators is described. In this approach, the connection between optimizing SNR and optimizing PCE is achieved by considering a metric in which the central correlation irradiance is divided by the total energy of the correlation plane. The peak-to-total energy (PTE) is shown to be optimized similarly to SNR and PCE. Since PTE is a function of the search values G and beta, the optimal filter is determined with only a two-dimensional search.

Two dimensional vernier

A two-dimensional vernier scale is disclosed utilizing a cartesian grid on one plate member with a polar grid on an overlying transparent plate member. The polar grid has multiple concentric circles at a fractional spacing of the spacing of the cartesian grid lines. By locating the center of the polar grid on a location on the cartesian grid, interpolation can be made of both the X and Y fractional relationship to the cartesian grid by noting which circles coincide with a cartesian grid line for the X and Y direction.

Two-Dimensional Vernier Scale

Modified vernier scale gives accurate two-dimensional coordinates from maps, drawings, or cathode-ray-tube displays. Movable circular overlay rests on fixed rectangular-grid overlay. Pitch of circles nine-tenths that of grid and, for greatest accuracy, radii of circles large compared with pitch of grid. Scale enables user to interpolate between finest divisions of regularly spaced rule simply by observing which mark on auxiliary vernier rule aligns with mark on primary rule.
