Stabilization of the Polar Structure and Giant Second-Order Nonlinear Response of Single Crystal γ-NaAs 0.95 Sb 0.05 Se 2

The dearth of suitable materials significantly restricts the practical development of infrared (IR) laser systems with highly efficient and broadband tuning. Recently, γ-NaAsSe 2 is reported, and it exhibits a large nonlinear second-harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient of 590 pm V —1 at 2 µm. However, the crystal growth of γ-NaAsSe 2 is challenging because it undergoes a phase transition to centrosymmetric δ-NaAsSe 2 . Herein, the stabilization of non-centrosymmetric γ-NaAsSe 2 by doping the As site with Sb, which results in γ-NaAs 0.95 Sb 0.05 Se 2 is reported. The congruent melting behavior is confirmed by differential thermal analysis with a melting temperature of 450 °C and crystallization temperature of 415 °C. Single crystals with dimensions of 3 mm × 2 mm are successfully obtained via zone refining and the Bridgman method. The purification of the material plays a significant role in crystal growth and results in a bandgap of 1.78 eV and thermal conductivity of 0.79 Wm —1 K —1 . The single-crystal SHG coefficient of γ-NaAs 0.95 Sb 0.05 Se 2 exhibits an enormous value of |d 11 | = 648 ± 74 pm V —1 , which is comparable to that of γ-NaAsSe 2 and ≈20× larger than that of AgGaSe 2 . Importantly, the bandgap of γ-NaAs 0.95 Sb 0.05 Se 2 (1.78 eV) is similar to that of AgGaSe 2 , thus rendering it highly attractive as a high-performing nonlinear optical material.

Spin and charge density waves in quasi-one-dimensional KMn 6 Bi 5

The recent observation that pressure could suppress antiferromagnetic (AFM) order in quasi-one-dimensional AMn 6 Bi 5 Mn-cluster chain materials (A=Na, K, Rb, and Cs) and lead to a superconducting dome offers an alternative Mn-based class of materials with which to study unconventional superconductivity. Using neutron diffraction, we elucidate the exact nature of the previously unknown AFM ground state of KMn 6 Bi 5 and report finding transverse incommensurate spin density waves (SDWs) for the Mn atoms with a propagating direction along the chains. The SDWs have distinct refined amplitudes of ~2.46μ B for the Mn atoms in the pentagons and ~0.29μ B with a large standard deviation for Mn atoms at the center between the pentagons. AFM coupling dominates both the nearest-neighbor Mn-Mn interactions within the pentagon and next-nearest-neighbor Mn-Mn interactions out of the pentagon (along the propagating wave). The SDWs exhibit both local and itinerant characteristics potentially due to cooperative interactions between local magnetic exchange and conduction electrons. Single crystal x-ray diffraction below the AFM transition revealed satellite peaks originating from charge density waves along the chain direction with a q vector twice as large as that of the SDW, pointing to a strong real space coupling between them. Additionally, we report a significant magnetoelastic effect during the AFM transition, especially along the chain direction, observed in temperature-dependent x-ray powder diffraction. Our work not only reveals fascinating intertwined spin, charge, and lattice orders in one-dimensional KMn 6 Bi 5 , but also provides an essential piece of information on its magnetic structure to understand the mechanism of superconductivity in this Mn-based family.

Regulating surface potential maximizes voltage in all-perovskite tandems

The open circuit voltage (V OC ) deficit in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is greater in wide bandgap (>1.7 eV) cells than in ~1.5 eV perovskites. Quasi-Fermi level splitting (QFLS) measurements reveal V OC -limiting recombination at the electron transport layer (ETL) contact. This, we find, stems from inhomogeneous surface potential and poor perovskite-ETL energetic alignment. Common monoammonium surface treatments fail to address this; instead we introduce diammonium molecules to modify the perovskite surface states and achieve a more uniform spatial distribution of surface potential. Using 1,3-propane diammonium (PDA), QFLS increases by 90 meV, enabling 1.79 eV PSCs with a certified 1.33 V V OC , and > 19% power conversion efficiency (PCE). Incorporating this layer into a monolithic all-perovskite tandem, we report a record V OC of 2.19 V (89% of the Detailed Balance V OC limit) and > 27% PCE (26.3% certified quasi-steady-state). Furthermore, these tandems retain more than 86% of their initial PCE after 500 hrs operation.

Weak Electron–Phonon Coupling and Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance in n-type PbTe–Cu 2 Se via Dynamic Phase Conversion

This study investigates Ga-doped n-type PbTe thermoelectric materials and the dynamic phase conversion process of the second phases via Cu 2 Se alloying. Introducing Cu 2 Se enhances its electrical transport properties while reducing its lattice thermal conductivity (κlat) via weak electron–phonon coupling. Additionally, Cu 2 Te and CuGa(Te/Se) 2 (tetragonal phase) nanocrystals precipitate during the alloying process, resulting in Te vacancies and interstitial Cu in the PbTe matrix. At room temperature, Te vacancies and interstitial Cu atoms serve as n-type dopants, increasing the carrier concentration and electrical conductivity from ≈1.18 × 10 19 cm –3 and ≈1870 S cm –1 to ≈2.26 × 10 19 cm –3 and ≈3029 S cm –1 , respectively. With increasing temperature, the sample exhibits a dynamic change in Cu 2 Te content and the generation of a new phase of CuGa(Te/Se) 2 (cubic phase), strengthening the phonon scattering and obtaining an ultralow k lat . Pb 0.975 Ga 0.025 Te-3%CuSe exhibits a maximum figure of merit of ≈1.63 at 823 K, making it promising for intermediate-temperature device applications.

Evidence for nitrogen binding to surface defects for topological insulator Bi 2 Se 3

Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy and theoretical simulations we have studied the effects of nitrogen gas exposure on the electronic density of states of Bi 2 Se 3 , a well-studied topological insulator. In carefully controlled measurements, Bi 2 Se 3 crystals were initially cleaved in a helium gas environment and then exposed to a 22 SCFH flow of ultra-high purity N 2 gas. We observe a resulting change in the spectral curves, with the exposure effect saturating after approximately 50 min, ultimately bringing the Dirac point about 50 meV closer to the Fermi level. Furthermore, these results are compared to density functional theory calculations, which support a picture of N 2 molecules physisorbing near Se vacancies. Furthermore, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations aided by a Blue Moon ensemble method reveal the dissociative adsorption of N 2 molecules which then bind strongly to Se vacancies at the surface. In this scenario, the binding of the N atom to a Se vacancy site removes the surface defect state created by the vacancy and changes the position of the Fermi energy with respect to the Dirac point.

Discovery of chalcogenides structures and compositions using mixed fluxes

Advancements in many modern technologies rely on the continuous need for materials discovery. However, the design of synthesis routes leading to new and targeted solid-state materials requires understanding of reactivity patterns. Advances in synthesis science are necessary to increase efficiency and accelerate materials discovery. We present a highly effective methodology for the rational discovery of materials using high-temperature solutions or fluxes having tunable solubility. This methodology facilitates product selection by projecting the free-energy landscape into real synthetic variables: temperature and flux ratio. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique by synthesizing compounds in the chalcogenide system of A(Ba)-Cu-Q(O) (Q = S or Se; A = Na, K or Rb) using mixed AOH/AX (A = Li, Na, K or Rb; X = Cl or I) fluxes. We present 30 unreported compounds or compositions, including more than ten unique structural types, by systematically varying the temperature and flux ratios without requiring changing the proportions of starting materials. Additionally, we found that the structural dimensionality of the compounds decreases with increasing reactant solubility and temperature. This methodology serves as an effective general strategy for the rational discovery of inorganic solids.

Gamma-ray Spectra from a 3x3 CsPbBr 3 Array

CsPbBr 3 is a promising semiconductor material for X- and γ-ray detection at room temperature due to a wide bandgap of 2.3eV, high stopping power, and relatively high mobility-lifetime products of electrons and holes, and the capability of growing large crystals. In this paper we report on fabrication and testing of a 3.8 mm thick, 3 X 3 array with 1.2 mm pitch. Raw 137 Cs spectra were acquired with applied bias of 400 V, 500 V, and 600 V. Energy resolution of between 2 and 3 % FWHM at 662 keV was obtained from most pixels without any correction at room temperature. After 15 days under continuous bias at 600 V, no polarization effects were observed.

Ultrafast Excitonic Response in Two-Dimensional Hybrid Perovskites Driven by Intense Midinfrared Pulses

Two-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (2DHPs) are natural quantum-well-like materials, in which strong quantum and dielectric confinement effects due to the organic spacers give rise to tightly bound excitons with large binding energy. To examine the mutual interactions between the organic spacer cations and the inorganic charge-residing octahedral framework in 2DHPs, here we perform femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy by direct vibrational pumping of the organic spacers, followed by a visible-to-ultraviolet probe covering their excitonic resonances. Measurements on prototypical lead-bromide based 2DHP compounds, (BA) 2 ⁢PbBr 4 and (BA) 2 ⁢(FA)⁢Pb 2 ⁢Br 7 (BA+ = butylammonium; FA + = formamidinium), reveal two distinct regimes of the temporal response. The first regime is dominated by a pump-induced transient expansion of the organic spacer layers that reduces the exciton oscillator strength, whereas the second regime arises from pump-induced lattice heating effects primarily associated with a spectral shift of the exciton energy. In addition, vibrational excitation enhances the biexciton emission, which we attribute to a stronger intralayer exciton confinement as well as vibrationally induced exciton detrapping from defect states. Finally, our study provides fundamental insights regarding the impact of organic spacers on excitons in 2DHPs, as well as the excited-state dynamics and vibrational energy dissipation in these structurally diverse materials.

Nonequilibrium Lattice Dynamics in Photoexcited 2D Perovskites

Abstract Interplay between structural and photophysical properties of metal halide perovskites is critical to their utility in optoelectronics, but there is limited understanding of lattice response upon photoexcitation. Here, 2D perovskites butylammonium lead iodide, (BA) 2 PbI 4 , and phenethylammonium lead iodide, (PEA) 2 PbI 4 , are investigated using ultrafast transient X‐ray diffraction as a function of optical excitation fluence to discern structural dynamics. Both powder X‐ray diffraction and time‐resolved photoluminescence linewidths narrow over 1 ns following optical excitation for the fluence range studied, concurrent with slight redshifting of the optical bandgaps. These observations are attributed to transient relaxation and ordering of distorted lead iodide octahedra stimulated mainly by electron–hole pair creation. The c axis expands up to 0.37% over hundreds of picoseconds; reflections sampling the a and b axes undergo one tenth of this expansion with the same timescale. Post‐photoexcitation appearance of the (110) reflection in (BA) 2 PbI 4 would suggest a transient phase transition, however, through new single‐crystal XRD, reflections are found that violate glide plane conditions in the reported Pbca structure. The static structure space group is reassigned as P 2 1 2 1 2 1 . With this, a nonequilibrium phase transition is ruled out. These findings offer increased understanding of remarkable lattice response in 2D perovskites upon excitation.

Deterministic fabrication of 3D/2D perovskite bilayer stacks for durable and efficient solar cells

Realizing solution-processed heterostructures is a long-enduring challenge in halide perovskites because of solvent incompatibilities that disrupt the underlying layer. By leveraging the solvent dielectric constant and Gutmann donor number, we could grow phase-pure two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskite stacks of the desired composition, thickness, and bandgap onto 3D perovskites without dissolving the underlying substrate. Characterization reveals a 3D–2D transition region of 20 nanometers mainly determined by the roughness of the bottom 3D layer. Thickness dependence of the 2D perovskite layer reveals the anticipated trends for n-i-p and p-i-n architectures, which is consistent with band alignment and carrier transport limits for 2D perovskites. Here we measured a photovoltaic efficiency of 24.5%, with exceptional stability of T 99 (time required to preserve 99% of initial photovoltaic efficiency) of >2000 hours, implying that the 3D/2D bilayer inherits the intrinsic durability of 2D perovskite without compromising efficiency.

ACuZrQ 3 (A = Rb, Cs; Q = S, Se, Te): Direct Bandgap Semiconductors and Metals with Ultralow Thermal Conductivity

ACuZrQ 3 (A = Rb, Cs; Q = S, Se, Te) were synthesized as black platelet crystals. RbCuZrS 3 , RbCuZrSe 3 , and CsCuZrS 3 crystallize in the KCuZrSe 3 structure type with space group Cmcm, and RbCuZrTe 3 and CsCuZrTe 3 crystallize in the lower symmetry space group Pnma. The tellurides exhibit a second order Jahn-Teller distortion with off-centering of Zr in its octahedral environment. The magnitude of the distortion is larger in RbCuZrTe 3 than in CsCuZrTe 3 . The structures of beta-CsCuS 4 and Rb 2 Cu 5 Te 5 were also determined. CsCuZrS 3 melts at 910 C-circle and exhibits partial decomposition upon heating at 275 C-circle, while CsCuZrTe 3 melts incongruently. Our DFT calculations of RbCuZrQ 3 (Q = S, Se) and CsCuZrS 3 indicate direct gap semiconductors in agreement with experiments. ACuZrTe 3 (A = Rb, Cs) were calculated to be metals which was confirmed for RbCuZrTe 3 with variable temperature conductivity measurements and consistent with heat capacity measurements. Spectroscopic measurements found a bandgap and work function of 1.44(5) eV and 4.89(5) eV for RbCuZrS 3 and 0.95(5) eV and 4.67(5) eV for RbCuZrSe 3 , respectively. Finally, RbCuZrTe 3 did not exhibit an optical bandgap and has a work function of 4.64(5) eV. RbCuZrTe 3 exhibits a low thermal conductivity under 0.5 W m -1 K -1 at room temperature.

Enhancing and Extinguishing the Different Emission Features of 2D (EA(1-)(x)FA(x))(4)Pb3Br10 Perovskite Films

2D hybrid perovskites are attractive for optoelectronic devices. In thin films, the color of optical emission and the texture of crystalline domains are often difficult to control. Here, a method for extinguishing or enhancing different emission features is demonstrated for the family of 2D Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites (EA(1-)(x)FA(x))(4)Pb3Br10 (EA = ethylammonium, FA = formamidinium). When grown from aqueous hydrobromic acid, crystals of (EA(1-)(x)FA(x))(4)Pb3Br10 retain all the emission features of their parent compound, (EA)(4)Pb3Br10. Surprisingly, when grown from dimethylformamide (DMF), an emission feature, likely self-trapped exciton (STE), near 2.7 eV is missing. Extinction of this feature is correlated with DMF being incorporated between the 2D Pb-Br sheets, forming (EA(1-)(x)FA(x))(4)Pb3Br10 center dot(DMF)(y). Without FA, films grown from DMF form (EA)(4)Pb3Br10, retain little solvent, and have strong emission near 2.7 eV. Slowing the kinetics of film growth strengthens a different emission feature, likely a different type of STE, which is much broader and present in all compositions. Films of (EA(1-)(x)FA(x))(4)Pb3Br10 center dot(DMF)(y) have large, micron-sized domains and homogeneous orientation of the semiconducting sheets, resulting in low electronic disorder near the absorption edge. The ability to selectively strengthen or extinguish different emission features in films of (EA(1-)(x)FA(x))(4)Pb3Br10 center dot(DMF)(y) reveals a pathway to tune the emission color in these compounds.

Tuning the Structural and Magnetic Properties in Mixed Cation Mn x Co 2– x P 2 S 6

The metal thiophosphates (MTP), M 2 P 2 S 6, are a versatile class of van der Waals materials, which are notable for the possibility of tuning their magnetic properties with the incorporation of different transition-metal cations. Further, they also offer opportunities to probe the independent and synergistic role of the magnetically active cation sublattice when coupled to P 2 Q 6 polyhedra. Herein, we report the structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of the series of MTPs, Mn x Co 2– x P 2 S 6 ( x = 0.25, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 1.75) synthesized by the P 2 S 5 flux method. In this work, structural and elemental analysis indicates a homogeneous stoichiometry in the Mn x Co 2– x P 2 S 6 compounds. We observe that a correlation is apparent between the intensities of specific Raman modes and Raman shifts with respect to the alloying ratio between Mn and Co. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that the alloyed systems adopt an ordered antiferromagnetic (AFM) configuration with a dependence of the Néel temperature on the alloying ratio. A possible magnetic frustration behavior was observed for the composition MnCoP 2 S 6 due to magnetic moment compensation as the alloying ratio between Mn and Co approaches parity. Interestingly, mixed oxidation states of the metal cation species are also observed in Mn x Co 2– x P 2 S 6 along with a linear dependence of the work function on the alloying ratio of Mn and Co.

Coherent approach to two-dimensional heterolayered oxychalcogenides using molten hydroxides.

Heterolayered structures consist of two or more different types of layer and can exhibit exceptional physical properties. Rational routes to synthesize new members of such compounds are required because most of these compounds have been discovered unintentionally. So far there is no generic method to vertically stack chemically different layers to form two-dimensional compounds owing to a lack of understanding of the synthesis of these materials. Here we report the use of molten hydroxides as unconventional solutions for the rapid stacking of oxide and chalcogenide layers with precise composition control. In addition, the crystal growth of heterolayered phases can be achieved by the reaction of different components at their diffusion front in molten hydroxides. This approach creates conditions in which the building blocks for each heterolayer can coexist, enabling heterolayered structures and bypassing the challenges of traditional solid-state chemistry methods where short reactant diffusion lengths predominate. This crystal growth methodology for heterolayers is also applicable to systems that do not form congruent melts at high temperatures.

Heteroanionic Control of Exemplary Second-Harmonic Generation and Phase Matchability in 1D LiAsS 2– x Se x

The isostructural heteroanionic compounds β-LiAsS 2–x Se x (x = 0, 0.25, 1, 1.75, 2) show a positive correlation between selenium content and second-harmonic response and greatly outperform the industry standard AgGaSe 2 . These materials crystallize in the noncentrosymmetric space group Cc as one-dimensional $\frac{1}{∞}$ [AsQ 2 ] - (Q = S, Se, S/Se) chains consisting of corner-sharing AsQ3 trigonal pyramids with charge-balancing Li + atoms interspersed between the chains. LiAsS 2–x Se x melts congruently for 0 ≤ x ≤ 1.75, but when the Se content exceeds x = 1.75, crystallization is complicated by a phase transition. This behavior is attributed to the β- to α-phase transition present in LiAsSe 2 , which is observed in the Se-rich compositions. The band gap decreases with increasing Se content, starting at 1.63 eV (LiAsS 2 ) and reaching 1.06 eV (β-LiAsSe 2 ). Second-harmonic generation measurements as a function of wavelength on powder samples of β-LiAsS 2–x Se x show that these materials exhibit significantly higher nonlinearity than AgGaSe 2 (d 36 = 33 pm/V), reaching a maximum of 61.2 pm/V for LiAsS 2 . In comparison, single-crystal measurements for LiAsSSe yielded a d eff = 410 pm/V. LiAsSSe, LiAsS 0.25 Se 1.75 , and β-LiAsSe 2 show phase-matching behavior for incident wavelengths exceeding 3 μm. The laser-induced damage thresholds from two-photon absorption processes are on the same order of magnitude as AgGaSe 2 , with S-rich materials slightly outperforming AgGaSe 2 and Se-rich materials slightly underperforming AgGaSe 2 .

Transuranium Sulfide via the Boron Chalcogen Mixture Method and Reversible Water Uptake in the NaCu T S 3 Family

The behavior of 5f electrons in soft ligand environments makes actinides, and especially transuranium chalcogenides, an intriguing class of materials for fundamental studies. Due to the affinity of actinides for oxygen, however, it is a challenge to synthesize actinide chalcogenides using non-metallic reagents. Using the Boron Chalcogen Mixture (BCM) method, we achieved the synthesis of the transuranium sulfide NaCuNpS 3 starting from the oxide reagent, NpO 2 . Via the same synthetic route, the isostructural composition of NaCuUS 3 was synthesized and the material contrasted with NaCuNpS 3 . Single crystals of the U-analog, NaCuUS 3 , were found to undergo an unexpected reversible hydration process to form NaCuUS 3 ·xH 2 O (x ≈ 1.5). Here, a large combination of techniques was used to fully characterize the structure, hydration process, and electronic structures, specifically a combination of single crystal, powder, high temperature powder X-ray diffraction, extended X-ray ab-sorption fine structure, infrared, and inductively coupled plasma spectroscopies, thermogravimetric analysis, and density functional theory calculations. The outcome of these analyses enabled us to determine the composition of NaCuUS 3 ·xH 2 O and obtain a structural model that demonstrated the retention of the local structure within the [CuUS 3 ] – layers throughout the hydration-dehydration process. Band structure, density of states, and Bader charge calculations for NaCuUS 3 , NaCu-US 3 ·xH 2 O, and NaCuNpS 3 along with X-ray absorption near edge structure, UV-vis-NIR and work function measurements on ACuUS 3 (A = Na, K, and Rb) and NaCuUS 3 ·xH 2 O samples were carried out to demonstrate that electronic properties arise from the [CuTS 3 ] – layers and show surprisingly little dependence on the interlayer distance.

2,3-Diphenylthieno[3,4-b]pyrazines as Hole-Transporting Materials for Stable, High-Performance Perovskite Solar Cells

High-performance and durable perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have advanced rapidly, enabled in part by the development of superior interfacial hole-transporting layers (HTLs). Here, in this study, a new series of 2,3-diphenylthieno[3,4-b]pyrazine (DPTP)-based small molecules containing bis- and tetrakis-triphenyl amino donors (1–3) was synthesized from simple, low-cost, and readily available starting materials. The matched energy levels, ideal surface topographies, high hole mobilities of 8.57 × 10 –4 cm 2 V –1 S –1 , and stable chemical structures of DPTP-4D (3) make it an effective hole-transporting material, delivering a PCE of 20.18% with high environmental, thermal, and light-soaking stability when compared to the reference HTL materials, doped Spiro-OMeTAD and PTAA in PSC n-i-p planar devices. Overall, these DPTP-based molecules are promising HTM candidates for the fabrication of stable PSCs.
