Modeling a Strain and Piezo Potentials in an InAs/GaAs Quantum Dot

We investigated the single-electron spectrum of an InAs/GaAs quantum dot (QD) using an effective potential model developed in previous studies. Our objective was to explore the limits of applicability of this model. We conducted numerical simulations, introducing a piezoelectric potential as a perturbation to the effective potential. The profile of this additional potential was derived from theoretical numerical studies presented in the literature. We analyzed the impact of variations in this profile within the framework of the perturbation theory. Our findings indicate that within a variation range of 25%, the effective potential model remains applicable.

Study of Helium Irradiation Effect on Al6061 Alloy Fabricated by Additive Friction Stir Deposition

Additive friction stir deposition (AFS-D) is considered a productive method of additive manufacturing (AM) due to its ability to produce dense mechanical parts at a faster deposition rate compared to other AM methods. Al6061 alloy finds extensive application in aerospace and nuclear engineering; nevertheless, exposure to radiation or high-energy particles over time tends to deteriorate their mechanical performance. However, the effect of radiation on the components manufactured using the AFS-D method is still unexamined. In this work, samples from the as-fabricated Al6061 alloy, by AFS-D, and the Al6061 feedstock rod were irradiated with He+ ions to 10 dpa at ambient temperature. The microstructural and mechanical changes induced by irradiation of He+ were examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nanoindentation. This study demonstrates that, at 10 dpa of irradiation damage, the feedstock Al6061 produced a bigger size of He bubbles than the AFS-D Al6061. Nanoindentation analysis revealed that both the feedstock Al6061 and AFS-D Al6061 samples have experienced radiation-induced hardening. These studies provide a valuable understanding of the microstructural and mechanical performance of AFS-D materials in radiation environments, offering essential data for the selection of materials and processing methods for potential application in aerospace and nuclear engineering.

Underlying Substrate Effect on Electrochemical Activity for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction with Low‐Platinum‐Loaded Catalysts

Platinum is known as the best catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) but the scarcity and high cost of Pt limit its widespread applicability. Herein, the role of the underlying substrate on the HER activity of dispersed Pt atoms is uncovered. A direct current magnetron sputtering technique is utilized to deposit transition metal (TM) thin films of W, Ti, and Ta as underlying substrates for extremely low loading of Pt (<1.5 at%). The electrocatalytic performance of as‐synthesized samples for the HER is examined in both alkali and acidic media. The results show that despite the low loading of Pt, the Pt/TM catalysts produce hydrogen at a rate comparable to that of pristine bulk Pt. Pt/TM catalysts also display good stability with less than 5% decay in performance after 10 h of continuous HER operation. Based on the computational study, the excellent performance is attributed to the modified electronic properties of the Pt atoms, offering ideal binding energy for HER due to interaction with the underlying substrates. This work provides a robust and industry‐friendly route toward designing efficient catalytic systems for important electrochemical reactions such as HER and others.

Oxide derived Cu nanofibril assembly for enhanced nonenzymatic glucose sensing

In this report, we have prepared copper nanofibril assembly via thermal oxidation followed by electrochemical reduction processes, exhibiting superior glucose detection ability. The morphological analysis evidenced the formation of rough islands or nanofibril structure on the Cu surface depending on initial thermal oxidation temperature. The glucose detection performance was investigated by performing cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry with varying glucose concentration. A high sensitivity (4131.57 μA mM – 1 cm – 2 ), low detection limit (1.41 μM), wider linear range (0–3.9 mM) and long–term stability (30 days) have been recorded for electrode thermally oxidized at 400 °C followed by electrochemical reduction process (rCu_400). The sensitivity is almost three times higher in comparison to the planner Cu surface. This significantly enhanced glucose sensing ability rCu_400 has been attributed to the nanofibril morphology, origination of Cu (111) facet and formation of a stable oxide layer evidenced by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis. Despite higher sensitivity, rCu_400 electrode does not show any response to the chloride ion, dopamine, ascorbic acid and uric acid. Finally, these results indicate that the Cu nanofibril structure prepared via simple oxidation/reduction process can be an excellent candidate to be used as an electrode for glucose sensing application.

Effect of the Deposition of Vanadium-Oxide on the Photocatalytic Activity of TiO2 Nanotubes and Its Photodiode Performance Interfaced with CH3NH3PbI3 Single Crystal

In this study, we report the influence of vanadium oxide (VO), as a photosensitive component, on the photoactivity of TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs). A series of TNTs of varying tube diameter were synthesized by the anodization of titanium foils at different voltages, while vanadium oxide was deposited on TNTs by wet chemical deposition. An improvement in the optical properties of nanotubes was observed after the deposition of vanadium oxide. An improvement in the optical properties (redshift in UV-Vis spectra) of TNTs and TNT/VO was noted. The photocatalytic activity was improved with increasing tube diameter, while it was weakened after the deposition of VO. Furthermore, photoactivity was investigated in photodiodes based on TNTs or TNT/VO and single crystals of CH3NH3PbI3. The photoelectric measurement revealed that different TNT diameters did not influence the I-V characteristic of the photodiodes, while the deposition of VO improved the photocurrent for smaller TNTs.

Machine learning prediction of the mechanical properties of refractory multicomponent alloys based on a dataset of phase and first principles simulation

In this work, a dataset including structural and mechanical properties of refractory multicomponent alloys was developed by fusing computations of phase diagram (CALPHAD) and density functional theory (DFT). The refractory multicomponent alloys, also named refractory complex concentrated alloys (CCAs) which contain 2–5 types of refractory elements were constructed based on Special Quasi-random Structure (SQS). The phase of alloys was predicted using CALPHAD and the mechanical property of alloys with stable and single body-centered cubic (BCC) at high temperature (over 1,500°C) was investigated using DFT-based simulation. As a result, a dataset with 393 refractory alloys and 12 features, including volume, melting temperature, density, energy, elastic constants, mechanical moduli, and hardness, were produced. To test the capability of the dataset on supporting machine learning (ML) study to investigate the property of CCAs, CALPHAD, and DFT calculations were compared with principal components analysis (PCA) technique and rule of mixture (ROM), respectively. It is demonstrated that the CALPHAD and DFT results are more in line with experimental observations for the alloy phase, structural and mechanical properties. Furthermore, the data were utilized to train a verity of ML models to predict the performance of certain CCAs with advanced mechanical properties, highlighting the usefulness of the dataset for ML technique on CCA property prediction.

High Strain Response and Dielectric Properties of Bi 1/2 (Na 0.78 K 0.22 ) 1/2 TiO 3 Ceramics Doped with (Fe 1/2 Nb 1/2 ) 4+

Environmentally friendly piezoceramics Bi 1/2 (Na 0.78 K 0.22 ) 1/2 Ti 1-x (Fe 1/2 Nb 1/2 ) x O 3 (BNKT-FN) with FeNb (FN) ratios 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03 and 0.04 were synthesized via conventional solid-state reaction (CSSR). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that the FN complexes were completely dissolved in BNKT perovskite and the structural transition occurred from ferroelectric to relaxor state. The average grain sizes for x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03 and 0.04 were found to be 0.34 μm, 0.35 μm, 0.38 μm, 0.32 μm and 0.39 μm, respectively. It is observed that the grain size increased with the addition of FN, except for x = 0.03. Here, the coercive field (E c ) and remnant polarization (P r ) of the system were decreased with increasing FN concentration and the highest E c of 21.1 kV/cm and P r of 29.2 μC/cm 2 were noted for the base pure sample. In addition, the increase of FN content steadily broadened the dielectric anomaly at maximum dielectric constant temperature (T m ) in the BNKT-FN system. Consequently, unipolar normalized strain (S max /E max ) was found to be enhanced monotonically achieving the highest value of around 654 pm/V (x = 0.02). These properties suggest that the investigated system could be a promising eco-friendly candidate for piezoelectric actuators and many other applications requiring high piezoelectric induced strain.

High and temperature-insensitive piezoelectric performance in the lead-free Sm-doped BiFeO 3 –BaTiO 3 ceramics with high Curie temperature

Large sensor piezoelectric constant (d 33 = 334 pC/N) and superior actuator piezoelectric constant (d 33 * = 552 pm/V) as well as a high Curie temperature (T C = 454 °C) were obtained simultaneously in the lead-free 0.67Bi 1.03 FeO 3 -0.33Ba 1-x Sm x TiO 3 ceramics. Such an excellent and temperature-insensitive piezoelectric performance with only 10% temperature variation of piezoelectric strain at the range of 25–125 °C is highly desirable for real applications. The structural origin of the enhanced piezoelectric performance is mainly attributed to the morphotropic phase boundary and the highest known tetragonality (c T /a T = 1.02) in such materials. Transmission electron microscopy and electro-mechanical phenomenological theory demonstrate that the superior d 33 and d 33 * are associated with the hybrids nanodomains (60–90 nm) and flattened thermodynamic energy profile owing to the local structure heterogeneity. Furthermore, these results are superior as the piezoelectric properties are temperature-independent and the material has large d 33 *, and high TC compared to other lead-free piezoelectric ceramics.

Cu and Ni Co-sputtered heteroatomic thin film for enhanced nonenzymatic glucose detection

Abstract In this work, we report a wafer-scale and chemical-free fabrication of nickel (Ni) and copper (Cu) heteroatomic Cu–Ni thin films using RF magnetron sputtering technique for non-enzymatic glucose sensing application. The as-prepared wafer-scale Cu–Ni thin films exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity toward glucose oxidation with a 1.86 μM detection limit in the range of 0.01 mM to 20 mM range. The Cu–Ni film shows 1.3- and 5.4-times higher glucose oxidation activity in comparison to the Cu and Ni electrodes, respectively. The improved electrocatalytic activity is attributed to the synergistic effect of the bimetallic catalyst and high density of grain boundaries. The Cu–Ni electrodes also possessed excellent anti-interference characteristics. These results indicate that Cu–Ni heteroatomic thin film can be a potential candidate for the development of non-enzymatic glucose biosensor because of its chemical free synthesis, excellent reproducibility, reusability, and long-term stability.

Tri-molybdenum phosphide (Mo 3 P) and multi-walled carbon nanotube junctions for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detection

Detection and analysis of volatile organic compounds' (VOCs) biomarkers lead to improvement in healthcare diagnosis and other applications such as chemical threat detection and food quality control. Here, we report on tri-molybdenum phosphide (Mo3P) and multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) junction-based vapor quantum resistive sensors (vQRSs), which exhibit more than one order of magnitude higher sensitivity and superior selectivity for biomarkers in comparison to pristine MWCNT junctions based vQRSs. Transmission electron microscope/scanning tunneling electron microscope with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies reveal the crystallinity and the presence of Mo and P elements in the network. The presence of Mo3P clearly enhanced the performance of vQRS as evidenced in sensitivity and selectivity studies. The vQRSs are stable over extended periods of time and are reproducible, making them a potential candidate for sensing related applications.

Enhanced detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by caffeine modified carbon nanotube junctions

Detection of vapor phase analytes and gas molecules is primarily essential for numerous applications including medical diagnostic, environmental monitoring, chemical threat detection, food quality control, and chemical warfare agents. Here, we developed Caffeine functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) random network based vapor quantum resistive sensors (vQRSs) for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detection. The localized transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) confirm migration of caffeine to CNT–CNT junction (CNTj). We have recorded more than one order of magnitude higher sensitivity and unique selectivity towards selective VOCs (e.g., acetone, toluene, ethanol, methanol, etc.) with short response time (few seconds) for caffeine modified CNT junction (Caf-CNTj) vQRSs. Molecular dynamics (MD) calculations suggest that the sensitivity of the sensor is diffusion limited, with an advective contribution for ethanol. Furthermore, the designed Caf-CNTj sensors can potentially be important candidate to be a part of electronic nose used for various application such as breath analysis and food quality monitoring.
