Preliminary Results for Uncertainty Quantification on Asymptotic Hydrogen Redistribution in a Prototypical Yttrium-Hydride Moderated Heat-Pipe-Cooled Microreactor

Yttrium hydride is one of the most promising materials for moderating nuclear microreactors. This is due to its high hydrogen concentration at high operating conditions, high value of thermal conductivity, and chemical stability. However, when subject to thermal and concentration spatial gradients, the hydrogen tends to migrate within the yttrium matrix, potentially leading to power swings and reactivity changes. This paper aims to present selected results concerning the sensitivity of the thermal and hydrogen redistribution response for a prototypical heat-pipe-cooled yttrium-hydride moderated microreactor to thermal properties uncertainty and selected design characteristics. To the best knowledge of the authors, this is the first study examining the impact of uncertainties on microreactor hydrogen redistribution response. To achieve this goal, Bison was used in conjunction with Dakota to create a framework able to perform Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) for the Simplified Microreactor Benchmark Assessment (SiMBA) problem.

Hybrid Temperature-Reactivity PID Controllers for Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Startup

In this work, a novel temperature-reactivity controller is introduced to rotate control drums based on a chamber temperature signal. It consists of two components: (1) a reactivity-driven proportional controller converting the temperature demand into a reactivity signal, and (2) a temperature-driven proportional-derivative controller which relies on a derivative term to anticipate sudden changes in demand and limit temperature overshoot. A weighting function is proposed to continuously transition from one component to the other.

Modelling Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Reactor Expander Cycle Startup Transients

As the interest in nuclear thermal propulsion grows, the need for high fidelity and comprehensive models of the system increases. An expander cycle model was developed using RELAP-7 for the thermal-hydraulic performance and Griffin to provide the power level using a point kinetics approximation, for a reference NTP system. The tank and pump are approximated using boundary conditions. Flow is split between the moderator cooling channels flow path and the regenerative cooling/reflector cooling channels flow path. The flow recombines before entering the turbine and the fuel cooling channels. The turbine pressure ratio is maintained at 1.44 using a PID controller. A startup transient was simulated and shows the capability of the model to run from low temperature and pressures to nominal conditions.

A Predictive Transient Model of the TREAT-SIRIUS Experiments

To support experiments modeling and transient analysis of the NASA-sponsored SIRIUS experiments in the Transient Reactor Test Facility (TREAT), an innovative predictive transient model has been developed to simulate various transient experiments. The developed model is based on a new approach that utilizes steady-state Monte Carlo calculations along with a surrogate model based on polynomial regression to determine the core reactivity. The reactivity is supplied to an exact point kinetics model that determines the reactor power, and it is coupled to an adiabatic feedback model to determine the fuel average temperature. In this work, the newly developed model is introduced along with validation test results considering SIRIUS-1 experiments at different power levels. The initial test results show a very good agreement with experimental data at different power levels, which indicates that the model can be used to predict the power of other transient tests.
