Dark Energy Survey Year 6 results: Redshift calibration of the MagLim++ lens sample

In this work, we derive and calibrate the redshift distribution of the MagLim++ lens galaxy sample used in the Dark Energy Survey Year 6 (DES Y6) 3 x 2pt cosmology analysis. The 3 x 2pt analysis combines galaxy clustering from the lens galaxy sample and weak gravitational lensing. The redshift distributions are inferred using the SOMPZ method - a Self-Organizing Map framework that combines deep-field multi-band photometry, wide-field data, and a synthetic source injection ( B alrog) catalog. Key improvements over the DES Year 3 (Y3) calibration include a noise-weighted SOM metric, an expanded Balrog catalogue, and an improved scheme for propagating systematic uncertainties, which allows us to generate O(10 8 ) redshift realizations that collectively span the dominant sources of uncertainty. These realizations are then combined with independent clustering-redshift measurements via importance sampling. The resulting calibration achieves typical uncertainties on the mean redshift of 1-2%, corresponding to a 20-30% average reduction relative to DES Y3. We compress the n(z) uncertainties into a small number of orthogonal modes for use in cosmological inference. Marginalizing over these modes leads to only a minor degradation in cosmological constraints. Here, this analysis establishes the MagLim++ sample as a robust lens sample for precision cosmology with DES Y6 and provides a scalable framework for future surveys.

Dark Energy Survey Year 6 results: Clustering redshifts and importance sampling of self-organized-maps ๐‘›โก(๐‘ง) realizations for 3 ร— 2 โขpt samples

This work is part of a series establishing the redshift framework for the 3 ร— 2 โขpt analysis of the Dark Energy Survey Year 6 (DES Y6). For DES Y6, photometric redshift distributions are estimated using self-organizing maps (SOMs), calibrated with spectroscopic and many-band photometric data. To overcome limitations from color-redshift degeneracies and incomplete spectroscopic coverage, we enhance this approach by incorporating clustering-based redshift constraints (clustering-z, or WZ) from angular cross-correlations with BOSS and eBOSS galaxies and eBOSS quasar samples. We define a WZ likelihood and apply importance sampling to a large ensemble of SOM-derived ๐‘›โก(๐‘ง) realizations, selecting those consistent with the clustering measurements to produce a posterior sample for each lens and source bin. The analysis uses angular scales corresponding to 1.5โ€“5 Mpc to optimize signal-to-noise ratio while mitigating modeling uncertainties and marginalizes over redshift-dependent galaxy bias and other systematics informed by the N-body simulation CARDINAL . While a sparser spectroscopic reference sample limits WZ constraining power at ๐‘ง >1.1, particularly for source bins, we demonstrate that combining SOM with WZ improves redshift accuracy and enhances the overall cosmological constraining power of DES Y6. As a result, we estimate an improvement in ๐‘† 8 of approximately 10% for cosmic shear and 3 ร—2โขpt analysis, primarily due to the WZ calibration of the source samples.

The DESI DR1 Peculiar Velocity Survey: Global Zero-point and H 0 Constraints

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) in its first Data Release (DR1) already provides more than 100,000 galaxies with relative distance measurements. The primary purpose of this paper is to perform the calibration of the zero-point for the DESI Fundamental Plane and Tullyโ€“Fisher relations, which allows us to measure the Hubble constant, H 0 . This sample has a lower statistical uncertainty than any previously used to measure H 0 , and we investigate the systematic uncertainties in absolute calibration that could limit the accuracy of that measurement. We improve upon the DESI Early Data Release Fundamental Plane H 0 measurement by (a) using a group catalog to increase the number of calibrator galaxies and (b) investigating alternative calibrators in the nearby Universe. Our baseline measurement calibrates to the SH0ES/Pantheon+ type Ia supernovae, and finds H 0 = 73.7 ยฑ 0.06 (stat.) ยฑ 1.1 (syst.) km s โˆ’1 Mpc โˆ’1 . Calibrating to surface brightness fluctuation distances yields a similar H 0 . We explore measurements using other calibrators, but these are currently less precise since the overlap with DESI peculiar velocity tracers is much smaller. In future data releases with an even larger peculiar velocity sample, we plan to calibrate directly to Cepheids and the tip of the red giant branch, which will enable the uncertainty to decrease towards a percent-level measurement of H 0 . This will provide an alternative to supernovae as the Hubble flow sample for H 0 measurements.

Dark Energy Survey: DESI-independent angular BAO measurement

In this work, we present a measurement of the angular baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale from the completed Dark Energy Survey (DES) dataset excluding the area of overlap with the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). We follow the same methodology and validation process as in the DES Y6 BAO analysis. We interpret the impact of this measurement in the context of the statistical preference for ๐‘ค 0 โข๐‘ค ๐‘Ž cold dark matter (CDM) over ฮ›โขCDM when combined with DES Y5 Type Ia supernovae (SN), Planck CMB, and DESI BAO. Based on our previous work, using the full Y6 DES BAO sample, in combination with SN, CMB and DESI data release 1 (DR1) BAO, added 0.3โข๐œŽ in this preference (from 3.7โข๐œŽ to 4.0โข๐œŽ), but this ignored possible correlations between datasets. Using our new DESI-independent DES BAO likelihood instead, we find a smaller increase in the statistical preference for ๐‘ค 0 โข๐‘ค ๐‘Ž โขCDM, from 3.7โข๐œŽ to 3.8โข๐œŽ when using DESI DR1 BAO, and from 4.0โข๐œŽ to 4.1โข๐œŽ when updating to the more recent DESI data release 2 (DR2) BAO. These significances reduce to 3.1โข๐œŽ when using the new calibrated DES SN-Dovekie. Alongside this work, we publicly release baofit_wtheta, the BAO fitting code for the angular correlation function used in the DES Y6 BAO analysis.

Dark Energy Survey year 6 results: Magnification modeling and its impact on galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing cosmology

Gravitational lensing magnification alters the observed spatial distribution of galaxies and must be accounted for to prevent biases in cosmological probes of the large-scale structure. We investigate its effects on the Dark Energy Survey Year 6 galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing analyses using the fiducial lens (position tracer) sample M ag L im++. Magnification bias is parameterized by a coefficient that describes the response of the number of selected objects per unlensed area element to a change in the lensing convergence. We quantify this coefficient using the BALROG synthetic source injection catalog to account for the complexity of the selection function, and compare these results with simplified estimates. The resulting values of the magnification coefficients for each redshift bin are [3.16 ยฑ 0.08, 2.76 ยฑ 0.21, 4.09 ยฑ 0.15, 4.42 ยฑ 0.16, 4.90 ยฑ 0.29, 4.83 ยฑ 0.25]. Relative to Year 3, this analysis provides more precise and accurate magnification bias estimates through a larger BALROG area and reweighting to better match the data properties. Here, the cosmological results are robust when tested against various magnification parameter prior choices and also when adding cross-clustering between lens redshift bins. Neglecting magnification, however, introduces significant systematic shifts: relative to the fiducial analysis with Gaussian priors centered on the BALROG -derived estimates, we observe shifts of 1.37ฯƒ in S 8 and -0.84ฯƒ in ฮฉ m (with cosmic shear included: -0.61ฯƒ in S 8 and -0.71ฯƒ in ฮฉ m ), in agreement with findings from simulated data, demonstrating that magnification must be modeled to avoid biases. Freeing the magnification bias in lens bin 2 leads to unphysical negative values, further justifying its exclusion from the fiducial Year 6 analysis.

Dark Energy Survey Year 3: Blue shear

Modeling the intrinsic alignment (IA) of galaxies poses a challenge to weak lensing analyses. Here, using the Dark Energy Survey Year 3 shape catalog, we expect less impact from IA when we limit the sample to blue, star-forming galaxies. The cosmological parameter constraints from this BLUE cosmic shear sample are stable to IA model choice, unlike passive galaxies in the full DES Y3 sample, the goodness-of-fit is improved and the ฮฉ m and ๐‘† 8 better agree with the observations from Planck on the cosmic microwave background. Mitigating IA with sample selection in DES, rather than flexible model choices, can reduce uncertainty in ๐‘† 8 by a factor of 1.5.

Dark Energy Survey Year 6 results: Galaxy-galaxy lensing

Here, we present galaxy-galaxy lensing measurements from the full six years of data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES Y6), covering 4031 deg 2 and used in the DES Y6 3ร—2 pt cosmological analysis. We use the Maglim++ lens sample, containing โˆผ9 million galaxies divided into six redshift bins, and the Metadetection source catalog, including โˆผ140 million galaxies divided into four redshift bins. The mean tangential shear signal achieves a total signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 173, corresponding to a 17% improvement over DES Y3. After applying the scale cuts used in the cosmological analysis, with ๐‘… min =6 Mpc/โ„Ž (4 Mpc/โ„Ž) for the linear (nonlinear) galaxy-bias model, the S/N is reduced to 75 (90). A comprehensive suite of validation tests demonstrates that the measurement is robust against observational and astrophysical systematics at the statistical precision required for the DES Y6 analysis. Although not used in the main cosmological analysis, we extract high signal-to-noise geometric shear-ratio measurements from the galaxy-galaxy lensing signal on small angular scales. These measurements provide an internal consistency check on the photometric redshift distributions and shear calibration used in the 3 ร—2 pt analysis.

Parity-odd four-point correlation function from the DESI data release 1 luminous red galaxy sample

The parity-odd four-point function provides a unique probe of fundamental symmetries and potential new physics in the large-scale structure of the Universe. We present measurements of the parity-odd four-point function using the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) DR1 luminous red galaxy (LRG) sample and assess its detection significance. Our analysis considers both auto- and cross-correlations, using two complementary approaches to the covariance: (i) the full analytic covariance matrix applied to the uncompressed data vector, and (ii) a compressed data vector combined with a hybrid covariance matrix constructed from simulations and analytic estimates. When using the full analytic covariance matrix without corrections, we observe apparent auto-correlation signals with significance up to 4โข๐œŽ. However, this excess is also consistent with a mismatch between the statistical fluctuations estimated from the simulations and those present in the real data. Our findings therefore suggest that the parity-odd signal in the current DESI DR1 LRG sample is consistent with zero. We note, however, that the low completeness of this sample may have a non-negligible impact on the detection sensitivity. Future data releases with improved completeness will be crucial for further investigation.

Validation of the DESI DR2 Lyโข ๐›ผ BAO analysis using synthetic datasets

The second data release (DR2) of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), containing data from the first three years of observations, doubles the number of Lyman-ฮฑ (Ly ฮฑ) forest spectra in DR1 and it provides the largest dataset of its kind. To ensure a robust validation of the baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) analysis using Ly ฮฑ forests, we have made significant updates compared to DR1 to both the mocks and the analysis framework used in the validation. In particular, we present CoLoRe-QL, a new set of Lyฮฑ mocks that use a quasilinear input power spectrum to incorporate the nonlinear broadening of the BAO peak. Here, we have also increased the number of realizations used in the validation to 400, compared to the 150 realizations used in DR1. Finally, we present a detailed study of the impact of quasar redshift errors on the BAO measurement, and we compare different strategies to mask damped Lyman-ฮฑ absorbers in our spectra. The BAO measurement from the Ly ฮฑ dataset of DESI DR2 is presented in a companion publication.

Dark energy survey year 3 results: Cosmological constraints from cluster abundances, weak lensing, and galaxy clustering

Galaxy clusters provide a unique probe of the late-time cosmic structure and serve as a powerful independent test of the ฮ›โขCDM model. This work presents the first set of cosmological constraints derived with โˆผ16,000 optically selected redMaPPer clusters across nearly 5000 deg 2 using DES year 3 datasets. Our analysis leverages a consistent modeling framework for galaxy cluster cosmology and DES-Y3 joint analyses of galaxy clustering and weak lensing (3 ร— 2โขpt), ensuring direct comparability with the DES-Y3 3 ร— 2โขpt analysis. Here, we obtain constraints of ๐‘† 8 = 0.864 ยฑ 0.035 and ฮฉ m = $0.26โข5^{+0.019}_{โˆ’0.031}$ from the cluster-based data vector. We find that cluster constraints and 3 ร— 2โขpt constraints are consistent under the ฮ›โขCDM model with a posterior predictive distribution (PPD) value of 0.53. The consistency between clusters and 3 ร— 2โขpt provides a stringent test of ฮ›โขCDM across different mass and spatial scales. Jointly analyzing clusters with 3 ร— 2โขpt further improves cosmological constraints, yielding ๐‘† 8 = $0.81โข1^{+0.022}_{โˆ’0.020}$ and ฮฉ m = $0.29โข4^{+0.022}_{โˆ’0.033}$, a 24% improvement in the ฮฉ m โˆ’ ๐‘† 8 figure of merit over 3 ร— 2โขpt alone. Moreover, we find no significant deviation from the Planck CMB constraints with a probability to exceed (PTE) value of 0.6, significantly reducing previous ๐‘† 8 tension claims. Finally, combining DES 3 ร— 2โขpt, DES clusters, and Planck CMB places an upper limit on the sum of neutrino masses of โˆ‘๐‘š ๐œˆ < 0.26 eV at 95% confidence under the ฮ›โขCDM model. These results establish optically selected clusters as a key cosmological probe and pave the way for cluster-based analyses in upcoming stage-IV surveys such as LSST, Euclid, and Roman.

Cosmological implications of DESI DR2 BAO measurements in light of the latest ACT DR6 CMB data

We report cosmological results from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) measurements of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) when combined with recent data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). By jointly analyzing ACT and Planck data and applying conservative cuts to overlapping multipole ranges, we assess how different ๐‘ƒโข๐‘™โข๐‘Žโข๐‘›โข๐‘โข๐‘˜ + ACT dataset combinations affect consistency with DESI. While ACT alone exhibits a tension with DESI exceeding 3โข๐œŽ within the ฮ›โข CDM model, this discrepancy is reduced when ACT is analyzed in combination with Planck. For our baseline DESI DR2 BAO + ๐‘ƒโข๐‘™โข๐‘Žโข๐‘›โข๐‘โข๐‘˜ PโขRโข4 + ACT likelihood combination, the preference for evolving dark energy over a cosmological constant is about 3โข๐œŽ, increasing to over 4โข๐œŽ with the inclusion of type Ia supernova data. While the dark energy results remain quite consistent across various combinations of Planck and ACT likelihoods with those obtained by the DESI collaboration, the constraints on neutrino mass are more sensitive, ranging from โˆ‘๐‘š ๐œˆ < 0.061 eV in our baseline analysis, to โˆ‘๐‘š ๐œˆ < 0.077 eV (95% confidence level) in the CMB likelihood combination chosen by ACT when imposing the physical prior โˆ‘๐‘š ๐œˆ > 0 eV.

DESI DR2 results. I. Baryon acoustic oscillations from the Lyman alpha forest

We present the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements with the Lyman-๐›ผ (Lyโข๐›ผ) forest from the second data release (DR2) of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey. Our BAO measurements include both the autocorrelation of the Lyโข๐›ผ forest absorption observed in the spectra of high-redshift quasars and the cross-correlation of the absorption with the quasar positions. The total sample size is approximately a factor of 2 larger than the DR1 dataset, with forest measurements in over 820,000 quasar spectra and the positions of over 1.2 million quasars. We describe several significant improvements to our analysis in this paper, and two supporting papers describe improvements to the synthetic datasets that we use for validation and how we identify damped Lyโข๐›ผ absorbers. Our main result is that we have measured the BAO scale with a statistical precision of 1.1% along and 1.3% transverse to the line of sight, for a combined precision of 0.65% on the isotropic BAO scale at ๐‘ง eff =2.33. This excellent precision, combined with recent theoretical studies of the BAO shift due to nonlinear growth, motivated us to include a systematic error term in Lyโข๐›ผ BAO analysis for the first time. We measure the ratios ๐ท ๐ป โก(๐‘ง eff )/๐‘Ÿ ๐‘‘ = 8.632 ยฑ 0.098 ยฑ 0.026 and ๐ท ๐‘€ โก(๐‘ง eff )/๐‘Ÿ ๐‘‘ = 38.99 ยฑ 0.52 ยฑ 0.12, where ๐ท ๐ป = ๐‘/๐ปโก(๐‘ง) is the Hubble distance, ๐ท ๐‘€ is the transverse comoving distance, ๐‘Ÿ ๐‘‘ is the sound horizon at the drag epoch, and we quote both the statistical and the theoretical systematic uncertainty. The companion paper presents the BAO measurements at lower redshifts from the same dataset and the cosmological interpretation.

Validation of the DESI DR2 measurements of baryon acoustic oscillations from galaxies and quasars

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Data Release 2 (DR2) galaxy and quasar clustering data represents a significant expansion of data from Data Release 1 (DR1), providing improved statistical precision in baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) constraints across multiple tracers, including bright galaxies, luminous red galaxies, emission line galaxies, and quasars. In this paper, we validate the BAO analysis of DR2. We present the results of robustness tests on the blinded DR2 data and, after unblinding, consistency checks on the unblinded DR2 data. All results are compared with those obtained from a suite of mock catalogs that replicate the selection and clustering properties of the DR2 sample. We confirm the consistency of DR2 BAO measurements with DR1 while achieving a reduction in statistical uncertainties due to the increased survey volume and completeness. The combined BAO precision, including both statistical and systematic errors, improves from โˆผ0.52% in DR1 to 0.30% in DR2โ€”a factor of 1.7 gain. We assess the impact of analysis choices, including different data vectors (correlation function vs power spectrum), modeling approaches and systematics treatments, and an assumption of the Gaussian likelihood, finding that our BAO constraints are stable across these variations and assumptions with a few minor refinements to the baseline setup of the DR1 BAO analysis. We summarize a series of pre-unblinding tests that confirmed the readiness of our analysis pipeline, the final systematic errors, and the DR2 BAO analysis baseline. The successful completion of these tests led to the unblinding of the DR2 BAO measurements, ultimately leading to the DESI DR2 cosmological analysis, with their implications for the expansion history of the Universe and the nature of dark energy presented in the DESI key paper (companion paper).

DESI DR2 results. II. Measurements of baryon acoustic oscillations and cosmological constraints

We present baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements from more than 14 million galaxies and quasars drawn from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Data Release 2 (DR2), based on three years of operation. For cosmology inference, these galaxy measurements are combined with DESI Lyman-๐›ผ forest BAO results presented in a companion paper (M. Abdul-Karim et al., companion paper, Phys. Rev. D 112, 083514 2025.). The DR2 BAO results are consistent with DESI DR1 and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and their distance-redshift relationship matches those from recent compilations of supernovae (SNe) over the same redshift range. The results are well described by a flat ฮ› cold dark matter (ฮ›โขCDM) model, but the parameters preferred by BAO are in mild, 2.3โข๐œŽ tension with those determined from the cosmic microwave background (CMB), although the DESI results are consistent with the acoustic angular scale ๐œƒ * that is well measured by Planck. This tension is alleviated by dark energy with a time-evolving equation of state parametrized by ๐‘ค0 and ๐‘ค๐‘Ž, which provides a better fit to the data, with a favored solution in the quadrant with ๐‘ค 0 >โˆ’1 and ๐‘ค ๐‘Ž <0. This solution is preferred over ฮ› โขCDM at 3.1โข๐œŽ for the combination of DESI BAO and CMB data. When also including SNe, the preference for a dynamical dark energy model over ฮ›โข CDM ranges from 2.8 โˆ’ 4.2โข๐œŽ depending on which SNe sample is used. We present evidence from other data combinations which also favor the same behavior at high significance. From the combination of DESI and CMB we derive 95% upper limits on the sum of neutrino masses, finding โˆ‘๐‘š ๐œˆ < 0.064 eV assuming ฮ› โขCDM and โˆ‘๐‘š ๐œˆ < 0.16 eV in the ๐‘ค0โข๐‘ค๐‘Ž model. Unless there is an unknown systematic error associated with one or more datasets, it is clear that ฮ›โข CDM is being challenged by the combination of DESI BAO with other measurements and that dynamical dark energy offers a possible solution.

Extended dark energy analysis using DESI DR2 BAO measurements

We conduct an extended analysis of dark energy constraints, in support of the findings of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) second data release cosmology key paper, including DESI data, Planck cosmic microwave background observations, and three different supernova compilations. Using a broad range of parametric and nonparametric methods, we explore the dark energy phenomenology and find consistent trends across all approaches, in good agreement with the ๐‘ค 0โข ๐‘ค ๐‘Žโข CDM (cold dark matter) key paper results. Even with the additional flexibility introduced by nonparametric approaches, such as binning and Gaussian processes, we find that extending ฮ›โข CDM to include a two-parameter ๐‘คโก(๐‘ง) is sufficient to capture the trends present in the data. Finally, we examine three dark energy classes with distinct dynamics, including quintessence scenarios satisfying ๐‘ค โ‰ฅ โˆ’1, to explore what underlying physics can explain such deviations. The current data indicate a clear preference for models that feature a phantom crossing; although alternatives lacking this feature are disfavored, they cannot yet be ruled out. Our analysis confirms that the evidence for dynamical dark energy, particularly at low redshift (๐‘ง โ‰ฒ 0.3), is robust and stable under different modeling choices.

Constraints on neutrino physics from DESI DR2 BAO and DR1 full shape

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Collaboration has obtained robust measurements of baryon acoustic oscillations in the redshift range 0.1 < ๐‘ง < 4.2, based on the Lyman-๐›ผ forest and galaxies from data release 2. We combine these measurements with cosmic microwave background (CMB) data from Planck and the Atacama Cosmology Telescope to place our tightest constraints yet on the sum of neutrino masses. Assuming the cosmological ฮ›โข CDM model and three degenerate neutrino states, we find โˆ‘๐‘š ๐œˆ < 0.0642 eV (95%) with a marginalized error of ๐œŽโก(โˆ‘๐‘š ๐œˆ ) = 0.020 eV. We also constrain the effective number of neutrino species, finding ๐‘ eff = 3.2โข3$^{+0.35}_{โˆ’0.34}$ (95%), in line with the Standard Model prediction. When accounting for neutrino oscillation constraints, we find a preference for the normal mass ordering and an upper limit on the lightest neutrino mass of ๐‘š ๐‘™ < 0.023 eV (95%). However, we determine using frequentist and Bayesian methods that our constraints are in tension with the lower limits derived from neutrino oscillations. Correcting for the physical boundary at zero mass, we report a 95% Feldman-Cousins upper limit of โˆ‘๐‘š ๐œˆ < 0.053 eV, breaching the lower limit from neutrino oscillations. Considering a more general Bayesian analysis with an effective cosmological neutrino mass parameter, โˆ‘๐‘š ๐œˆ,eff , that allows for negative energy densities and removes unsatisfactory prior weight effects, we derive constraints that are in 3โข๐œŽ tension with the same oscillation limit, while the error rises to ๐œŽโก(โˆ‘๐‘š ๐œˆ,eff ) = 0.053 eV. In the absence of unknown systematics, this finding could be interpreted as a hint of new physics not necessarily related to neutrinos. The preference of DESI and CMB data for an evolving dark energy model offers one possible solution. In the ๐‘ค 0 โข๐‘ค ๐‘Ž โขCDM model, we find โˆ‘๐‘š ๐œˆ < 0.163 eV (95%), relaxing the neutrino tension. These constraints all rely on the effects of neutrinos on the cosmic expansion history. Using full-shape power spectrum measurements of data release 1 galaxies, we place complementary constraints that rely on neutrino free streaming. Our strongest such limit in ฮ› โขCDM, using selected CMB priors, is โˆ‘๐‘š ๐œˆ < 0.193 eV (95%).

Construction of the damped Lyโข๐›ผ absorber catalog for DESI DR2 Lyโข๐›ผ BAO

We present the Damped Lyโข๐›ผ Toolkit for automated detection and characterization of damped Lyโข๐›ผ absorbers (DLAs) in quasar spectra. Our method uses quasar spectral templates with and without absorption from intervening DLAs to reconstruct observed quasar forest regions. The best-fitting model determines whether a DLA is present while estimating the redshift and HI column density. With an optimized quality cut on detection significance (ฮ”โข๐œ’$^{2}_{๐‘Ÿ}$ >0.03), the technique achieves an estimated 80% purity and 79% completeness when evaluated on simulated spectra with S/N>2 that are free of broad absorption lines (BALs). We provide a catalog containing candidate DLAs from the DLA Toolkit detected in DESI DR1 quasar spectra, of which 21 719 were found in S/N>2 spectra with predicted log 10 โก(๐‘ ๐™ท๐™ธ )>20.3 and detection significance ฮ”โข๐œ’$^{2}_{๐‘Ÿ}$ >0.03. We compare the Damped Lyโข๐›ผ Toolkit to two alternative DLA finders based on a convolutional neural network and Gaussian process models. We present a strategy for combining these three techniques to produce a high-fidelity DLA catalog from DESI DR2 for the Lyโข๐›ผ forest baryon acoustic oscillation measurement. The combined catalog contains 41 152 candidate DLAs with log 10 โก(๐‘ ๐™ท๐™ธ )>20.3 from quasar spectra with S/N>2. We estimate this sample to be approximately 85% pure and 79% complete when BAL quasars are excluded.

Model-independent measurement of the matter-radiation equality scale in DESI 2024

The peak of the matter power spectrum, known as the turnover (TO) scale, is determined by the horizon size at the time of matter-radiation equality. This scale can serve as a standard ruler, independent of other features in the matter power spectrum, such as baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). Here, in this work, we present the first detection of the turnover in the galaxy autopower spectrum, utilizing the distribution of quasars and luminous red galaxies (LRG) measured by the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) during its first year of survey operations in a model-independent manner. To avoid confirmation bias, we first analyze the data using data blinding methods designed for the DESI baryon acoustic oscillation, redshift space distortion and scale-dependent bias signals. We measure the angle-averaged dilation distance ๐ท V โก(๐‘ง = 1.651) = (38.1 ยฑ 2.5)โข๐‘Ÿ H from the quasars and ๐ท V โก(๐‘ง = 0.733) = (21.8 ยฑ 1.0)โข๐‘Ÿ H from the LRG sample in units of the horizon ๐‘Ÿ H at the matter-radiation-equality epoch. Combining these two constraints and assuming a flat ฮ›โขCDM model with three standard neutrino species, we can translate this into a constraint of ฮฉ m โขโ„Ž 2 = 0.13โข9$^{+0.036}_{โˆ’0.046}$. We can break the ฮฉ m โˆ’๐ป 0 degeneracy with low-redshift distance measurements from type-Ia supernova (SN) data from Pantheon+, we obtain a sound-horizon free estimate of the Hubble-Lemaรฎtre parameter of ๐ป 0 = 65.2$^{+4.9}_{โˆ’6.2}$ km/s/Mpc, consistent with sound-horizon dependent DESI measurements. On the other hand, combining the DESI BAO and TO, we find a truly DESI-only measurement of ๐ป 0 = 74.0$^{+7.2}_{โˆ’3.5}$ km/s/Mpc, in line with DESI-only full-shape results where the sound-horizon scale is marginalized out. This discrepancy in ๐ป 0 can be reconciled in a ๐‘ค 0 โข๐‘ค ๐‘Ž โข CDM cosmology, where the combination of DESI BAO and TO data yields ๐ป 0 = 66.5 ยฑ 7.2 km/s/Mpc.
