Effects of irregularity anisotropy on Faraday polarization fluctuations

The previous model (Lee et al., 1982) of the Faraday polarization fluctuations (FPF) is extended after taking into account the anisotropic nature of the commonly observed, rodlike and sheetlike ionospheric irregularities. Striking effects of irregularity anisotropy are found in the longitudinal radio propagation. However, if the wave propagation angle is not small (say, greater than 5 deg), the effects of irregularity anisotropy on FPF introduced by rodlike irregularities weaken significantly, while those caused by sheetlike irregularities remain prominent. Therefore, under the same ionospheric propagation conditions, sheetlike ionospheric irregularities are more effective than rodlike ionospheric irregularities in causing the FPF of radio waves. It is expected that intense FPF of VHF radio signals can be observed not only near the equatorial anomaly but also in the auroral region.

Filamentation instability of magnetosonic waves in the solar wind environment

Intense magnetosonic waves, originally propagating at the right angle with the interplanetary magnetic field, can excite a purely growing mode along the interplanetary magnetic field together with two symmetric magnetosonic sidebands propagating obliquely across the magnetic field. This instability process leads to the filamentation of the magnetosonic pump waves. These two excited magnetosonic sideband modes propagate together perpendicularly across the magnetic field and, meanwhile, form a standing wave pattern along the magnetic field. The thresholds of this filamentation instability can be exceeded in the solar wind environment. It is predicted that the density fluctuations produced by the filamentation instability along the interplanetary magnetic field have wavelengths greater than, at least, a few earth radii. The polarization of the obliquely propagating magnetosonic waves excited by the filamentation instability is determined by the characteristics of the magnetosonic pump waves and the environmental plasmas.

Parametric excitation of whistler waves by HF heater

Possible generation of whistler waves by Tromso HF heater is investigated. It is shown that the HF heater wave can parametrically decay into a whistler wave and a Langmuir wave. Since whistler waves may have a broad range of frequency, the simultaneously excited Langmuir waves can have a much broader frequency bandwidth than those excited by the parametric decay instability.

Periodic amplitude variations as precursors of plumes of equatorial ionospheric irregularities

Periodic amplitude fluctuations of VHF signals from a geostationary satellite monitored from near the magnetic equator have been observed in the evening hours as precursors of strong Rayleigh fading associated with plumes of irregularities. These periodic fluctuations called amplitude waves exhibit amplitude changes of only 1 to 2 dB and have been observed for up to 30 minutes before the onset of strong scintillations. Individual fades are correlated over distances of at least 120 km in the magnetic east-west direction. The velocity of these wavelike disturbances has been found to be approximately 140 m/s eastward with a corresponding wavelength of 25 km.

Explosive spread F caused by lightning-induced electromagnetic effects

Lightning-produced electromagnetic effects may produce significant modifications in the ionospheric plasmas. An outstanding phenomenon investigated in this paper is the so-called explosive spread F, whose close link with lightning has been identified (Woodman and Kudeki, 1984). Parametric instability excited by the lightning-induced whistler waves is proposed as a potential source mechanism causing the explosive spread F.

ECRH of trapped electrons in laboratory magnetoplasmas

Heating of plasma electrons by high power millimeter wave fields at cyclotron harmonic resonance is studied. A mirror field is modeled for the local trapping of electrons. It is shown that superthermal electrons can be generated as the consequence of the ECRH of trapped electrons.

Spectral broadening of VLF radio signals traversing the ionosphere

Two different source mechanisms that can cause the spectral broadening of VLF radio signals traversing the ionosphere, a phenomenon first observed by Bell et al. (1983), are proposed. The first is a nonlinear scattering of the whistler-mode VLF signals by preexisting ionospheric density fluctuations that render a mode conversion to lower hybrid waves. In the absence of ionospheric irregularities, a second mechanism, that involves a parametric instability, can excite the lower hybrid waves, as was proposed by Lee and Kuo (1984). Since both types of spectra were recorded in experiments, it is concluded that the two suggested source mechanisms contribute additively to the observed spectral broadening of injected VLF waves.

Filamentation instability of large-amplitude Alfven waves

An instability that leads to the filamentation of large-amplitude Alfven waves and gives rise to purely growing density and magnetic field fluctuations is studied. The dispersion relation of the instability is derived, from which the threshold conditions and the growth rates of the instability are analyzed quantitatively for applications to the solar wind plasma. Their dependence on the filamentation spectrum, the plasma beta, and the pump frequency and intensity was examined for both right-hand and left-hand circularly polarized Alfven waves. The excitation of filamentation instability for certain cases of interest is discussed and compared with that of the parametric decay and modulation instability. The relevance of the proposed instability to some observations is discussed.

Electrochemically regenerable metabolic CO2 and moisture control system for an advanced EMU application

Regenerable CO2 and moisture removal techniques that reduce expendables and logistics requirements are needed to sustain people undertaking extravehicular activities for the Space Station. NASA has been investigating ways to advance the Electrochemically Regenerable CO2 and Moisture Absorption (ERCA) technology to replace the nonregenerable solid lithium hydroxide absorber for the advanced Portable Life Support System (PLSS). The ERCA technology, due to its use of liquid absorbent, has the ability to effectively satisfy the high metabolic CO2 and moisture removal requirements of PLSS applications. This paper defines the ERCA technology concept and its advantages for the PLSS application, reviews breadboard and subscale testdata and presents the results of design concepts for a prototype Absorber Module of improved performance and the physical characteristics of the projected flight hardware.

Advancements in oxygen generation and humidity control by water vapor electrolysis

Regenerative processes for the revitalization of manned spacecraft atmospheres or other manned habitats are essential for realization of long-term space missions. These processes include oxygen generation through water electrolysis. One promising technique of water electrolysis is the direct conversion of the water vapor contained in the cabin air to oxygen. This technique is the subject of the present program on water vapor electrolysis development. The objectives were to incorporate technology improvements developed under other similar electrochemical programs and add new ones; design and fabricate a mutli-cell electrochemical module and a testing facility; and demonstrate through testing the improvements. Each aspect of the water vapor electrolysis cell was reviewed. The materials of construction and sizing of each element were investigated analytically and sometime experimentally. In addition, operational considerations such as temperature control in response to inlet conditions were investigated. Three specific quantitative goals were established.

Advanced EMU electrochemically regenerable CO2 and moisture absorber module breadboard

The applicability of the Electrochemically Regenerable Carbon Dioxide and Moisture Absorption Technology to the advanced extravehicular mobility unit was demonstrated by designing, fabricating, and testing a breadboard Absorber Module and an Electrochemical Regenerator. Test results indicated that the absorber module meets or exceeds the carbon dioxide removal requirements specified for the design and can meet the moisture removal requirement when proper cooling is provided. CO2 concentration in the vent gas stream was reduced from 0.52 to 0.027 kPa (3.9 to 0.20 mm Hg) for the full five hour test period. Vent gas dew point was reduced from inlet values of 294 K (69 F) to 278 K (41 F) at the outlet. The regeneration of expended absorbent was achieved by the electrochemical method employed in the testing. An absorbent bed using microporous hydrophobic membrane sheets with circulating absorbent is shown to be the best approach to the design of an Absorber Module based on sizing and performance. Absorber Module safety design, comparison of various absorbents and their characteristics, moisture absorption and cooling study and subsystem design and operation time-lining study were also performed.

Thermal filamentation instability driven by the auroral electrojet current

A thermal instability leading to the filamentation of auroral electrojet currents and giving rise to purely growing magnetic field-aligned density irregularities in the E region of the high-latitude ionosphere is investigated. The physical process of the instability is through the modification of the electron-neutral collision frequency due to the electron temperature perturbation in the electrojet. A dispersion relation of the instability is derived, from which the threshold electrojet current and the growth rate of the instability are determined. It is found that they become independent of the scale sizes of the irregularities for scale sizes larger than about 13 m. The proposed instability can thus be considered to be one of the mechanisms responsible for observed relatively large-scale E region irregularities (Pfaff et al., 1984).

The glass transition, crystallization and melting in Au-Pb-Sb alloys

The glass transition, crystallization and melting of Au(55)Pb(22.5)Sb(22.5) alloys have been studied by differential scanning calorimetry DSC. Crystallization on heating above the glass transition temperature Tg (45 C) begins at 64 C. Further crystallization events are observed at 172 C and 205 C. These events were found to correspond to the formation of the intermetallic compounds AuSb2, Au2Pb, and possibly AuPb2, respectively. Isothermal DSC scans of the glassy alloy above Tg were used to monitor the kinetics of crystallization. The solidification behavior and heat capacity in the glass-forming composition range were determined with droplet samples. An undercooling level of 0.3T(L) below the liquidus temperature T(L) was achieved, resulting in crystallization of different stable and metastable phases. The heat capacity C(P) of the undercooled liquid was measured over an undercooling range of 145 C.

Combined operation of two ground transmitters for enhanced ionospheric heating

The combined operation of a high or medium frequency ground transmitter and a VLF transmitter for enhanced ionospheric heating is examined. The high or medium frequency transmitter operating in a pulsed mode produce short-scale density striations that can render the nonlinear mode conversion of the subsequently launched VLF waves into lower hybrid waves. Also if the VLF waves are intense enough, they can excite meter-scale density striations and lower hybrid waves via parametric instabilities. The expected ionospheric effects of the system are discussed.

Faraday polarization fluctuations of satellite beacon signals

The anisotropic effects of random density irregularities in causing Faraday polarization fluctuations of VHF radio signals are examined, taking both rod-like and sheet-like irregularities into consideration. It is found that the variance of Faraday polarization fluctuations depends on the ratio of perpendicular to parallel correlation lengths. The anisotropic effect of rod-like ionospheric irregularities are shown to be most appreciable for longitudinal propagation. The anisotropic effect of sheet-like ionospheric irregularities, however, is not strongly dependent on the radio propagation angle. During transionospheric propagation at large angles with respect to the geomagnetic field, sheet-like irregularities may cause greater Faraday polarization fluctuations than rod-like irregularities.

Noncontact temperature pattern measuring device

This invention relates to a noncontact imagine pyrometer system for obtaining the true temperature image of a given substance in a contactless fashion without making assumptions about localized emissivity of the substance or the uniformity of the temperature distribution. Such a contactless temperature imaging system has particular application in the study and production of many materials where the physical contact required to make a conventional temperature measurement drastically effects or contaminates the physical process being observed. Two examples where accurate temperature profiles are of critical interest are: (1) the solid-liquid phase change interface in the production of electronic materials and (2) metastable materials in the undercooling region. The apparent novelty resides in the recognition that an active pyrometer system may be advantageously adapted to perform contactless temperature imaging so that an accurate temperature profile can be obtained.

Spectral characteristics of hydromagnetic waves in the magnetosphere

The presence of discrete frequencies in the resonant response of the magnetosphere is considered. The eigenequation characterizing the eigenmodes of the hydromagnetic waves in a cylindrical model for the outer magnetosphere is shown to have two turning points along the radial axis. The turning point locations are related to the values of the eigenperiod and the associated east-west wavenumber of the eigenmode. It is also found that only the discrete set of the magnetospheric cavity eigenmodes can efficiently couple the perturbations excited on the boundary of the magnetosphere to the field-line resonant mode excited inside the turning point of the cavity eigenmode.
