Ultralow Voltage Manipulation of Ferromagnetism

Spintronic elements based on spin transfer torque have emerged with potential for on-chip memory, but they suffer from large energy dissipation due to the large current densities required. In contrast, an electric-field-driven magneto-electric storage element can operate with capacitive displacement charge and potentially reach 1-10 µJ cm -2 switching operation. In this paper, magneto-electric switching of a magnetoresistive element is shown, operating at or below 200 mV, with a pathway to get down to 100 mV. A combination of phase detuning is utilized via isovalent La substitution and thickness scaling in multiferroic BiFeO 3 to scale the switching energy density to ≈10 µJ cm -2 . This work provides a template to achieve attojoule-class nonvolatile memories.

Coherent Transfer of Spin Angular Momentum by Evanescent Spin Waves within Antiferromagnetic NiO

Insulating antiferromagnets are efficient and robust conductors of spin current. To realise the full potential of these materials within spintronics, the outstanding challenges are to demonstrate scalability down to nanometric lengthscales and the transmission of coherent spin currents. Here, we report the coherent transfer of spin angular momentum by excitation of evanescent spin waves of GHz frequency within antiferromagnetic NiO at room temperature. Using element-specific and phase-resolved x-ray ferromagnetic resonance, we probe the injection and transmission of ac spin current, and demonstrate that insertion of a few nanometre thick epitaxial NiO(001) layer between a ferromagnet and non-magnet can even enhance the flow of spin current. Our results pave the way towards coherent control of the phase and amplitude of spin currents at the nanoscale, and enable the realization of spin-logic devices and spin current amplifiers that operate at GHz and THz frequencies.

Programming PAM antennae for efficient CRISPR-Cas9 DNA editing

Bacterial CRISPR-Cas9 nucleases have been repurposed as powerful genome editing tools. Whereas engineering guide RNAs or Cas nucleases have proven to improve the efficiency of CRISPR editing, modulation of protospacer-adjacent motif (PAM), indispensable for CRISPR, has been less explored. Here, we develop a DNA origami–based platform to program a PAM antenna microenvironment and address its performance at the single-molecule level with submolecular resolution. To mimic spatially controlled in vivo PAM distribution as may occur in chromatin, we investigate the effect of PAM antennae surrounding target DNA. We find that PAM antennae effectively sensitize the DNA cleavage by recruiting Cas9 molecules. Super-resolution tracking of single single-guide RNA/Cas9s reveals localized translocation of Cas9 among spatially proximal PAMs. We find that the introduction of the PAM antennae effectively modulates the microenvironment for enhanced target cleavage (up to ~50%). These results provide insight into factors that promote more efficient genome editing.

Element- and Time-Resolved Measurements of Spin Dynamics Using X-ray Detected Ferromagnetic Resonance

Although XFMR experiments have been carried out at a number of synchrotron radiation facilities since 2004, only a few facilities currently have XFMR setups available for user operation. Here in this review, we mainly focus on recent developments and work that has been carried out using time-resolved XFMR at beamline 4.0.2 of the Advanced Light Source and at beamline I10 of the Diamond Light Source. The experimental setup and the sample holder used at beamline I10 and beamline 4.0.2, respectively, are shown in Figure 1. We will first introduce the working principle of XFMR and then provide examples of the capabilities of this technique. Finally, we will briefly describe an outlook for the future development of and new opportunities for XFMR.

Electron quantum interference in epitaxial antiferromagnetic NiO thin films

The electron reflectivity from NiO thin films grown on Ag(001) has been systematically studied as a function of film thickness and electron energy. A strong electron quantum interference effect was observed from the NiO film, which is used to derive the unoccupied band dispersion above the Fermi surface along the Γ-X direction using the phase accumulation model. The experimental bands agree well with first-principles calculations. A weaker electron quantum interference effect was also observed from the CoO film.

Highly Enhanced Curie Temperature in Ga-Implanted Fe3GeTe2 van der Waals Material

Among many efforts in the research of van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials, increasing the Curie temperature above room temperature has been at the center of research in developing spintronics technology using vdW materials. Here an effective and reliable method of increasing the Curie temperature of ferromagnetic Fe3GeTe2 vdW materials by Ga implantation is reported. It is found that implanting Ga into Fe3GeTe2 by the amount of 10-3 Ga Å-3 could greatly enhance the Fe3GeTe2 Curie temperature by almost 100%. Spatially resolved microdiffraction and element-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy show little changes in the Fe3GeTe2 crystal structure and Fe valence state. In addition, the Ga implantation changes the Fe3GeTe2 magnetization from out-of-plane direction at low temperature to in-plane direction at high temperature. The result opens a new opportunity for tailoring the magnetic properties of vdW materials beyond room temperature.

Selected Negative Linear Compressibilities in the Metal–Organic Framework of [Cu(4,4'-bpy) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ]·SiF 6

Negative linear compressibility (NLC) is a rare high-pressure observation that lattice contraction is accompanied by the structural expansion along a specific direction. Generally, this counterintuitive phenomenon only derives from the intrinsic structural characteristics of materials and cannot be tuned by external perturbations. Searching for an effective method to control NLC effect is still a challenge in both chemical and material science. In this work, we successfully discover and select the NLC behaviors in the metal-organic framework (MOF) of [Cu(4,4'-bpy) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ]·SiF 6 (Cu(bpy)·SiF) through controlling the pressure conditions therein. The NLC effect of Cu(bpy)·SiF originates from the wine-rack mechanism that quasi-square grids transfer to rhombic ones with the structural expansion along the diagonal direction at high pressure. Meanwhile, both of the pressure range and magnitude of the NLC responses are enlarged with optimized pressure conditions. This study not only presents the intriguing selected NLC behaviors of a MOF but also proves the effects of pressure conditions on NLC, which offers promising strategies for further design and applications of NLC materials.
