Modifiers versus Channels: Creating Shape-Selective Catalysis of Metal Nanoparticles/Porous Nanomaterials

Shape-selective catalysis is of great research interest for its key role in chemical synthesis. Porous nanomaterials with uniform pore structures, have been proven as ideal supports for metal nanoparticles (MNPs) to generate efficient shape-selective catalysis. However, many widely used commercial irregular porous nanomaterials usually face the challenge to realize satisfactory shape selectivity due to the lack of molecular sieving structures. In this work, we report a concept of creating shape selectivity in MNPs/porous-MNPs using appropriate modifiers. The remained MNPs within the porous nanomaterials can cooperate with the channels to generate selectivity. Such strategy not only applies to regular porous nanomaterials (metal-organic frameworks, zeolites, etc.), but also can be extended to irregular porous nanomaterials (active carbon, P25, etc.). Potentially, the matching among different MNPs, corresponding modifiers and porous nanomaterials makes our strategy promising for wide applications in selective catalytic systems.

Canted antiferromagnetism in the quasi-one-dimensional iron chalcogenide BaFe 2 Se 4

We report the synthesis and physical properties studies of quasi-one-dimensional (quais-1D) iron chalcogenide BaFe 2 Se 4 which shares the FeSe 4 tetrahedra building motif commonly seen in the iron chalcogenide superconductors. A high-quality polycrystalline sample was achieved by solid-state reaction method and characterized by x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and neutron diffraction measurements. BaFe 2 Se 4 is a narrow gap semiconductor that magnetically orders at ~310 K. Therefore, both neutron powder diffraction results and isothermal M-H loops suggest a canted antiferromagnetic structure where Fe sublattices are antiferromagnetically ordered along the c-axis quasi-1D chain direction, resulting in a net ferromagnetic moment in the perpendicular direction along the a axis with tilted angle of 18.7° towards the b axis.

Peroxide-Templated Assembly of a Trimetal Neodymium Complex Single-Molecule Magnet

In this study, we present a tri-metal neodymium complex with two notable qualities. Firstly, the assembly of the complex is templated by peroxide derived from atmospheric oxygen. Secondly, the bulk material behaves as a super-paramagnet, implying that the individual complexes are molecular magnets. The peroxide-templated assembly is possible due to the confluence of the high oxophilicity of neodymium along with the use of an azeotropic distillation synthesis method, which excludes water but admits oxygen. SQUID magnetometer measurements show an extremely high magnetic susceptibility as well as a lack of remanence.
