Coexistence and Coupling of Multiple Charge Orderings and Spin States in Hexagonal Ferrite

The coupling between charge and spin orderings in strongly correlated systems plays a crucial role in fundamental physics and device applications. As a candidate of multiferroic materials, LuFe 2 O 4 with a nominal Fe 2.5+ valence state has the potential for strong charge–spin interactions; however, these interactions have not been fully understood until now. Here, combining complementary characterization methods with theoretical calculations, two types of charge orderings with distinct magnetic properties are revealed. The ground states of LuFe 2 O 4 are decided by the parallel/antiparallel coupling of both charge and spin orderings in the adjacent FeO double layers. Whereas the ferroelectric charge ordering remains ferrimagnetic below 230 K, the antiferroelectric ordering undergoes antiferromagnetic–ferrimagnetic–paramagnetic transitions from 2 K to room temperature. This study demonstrates the unique aspects of strong spin-charge coupling within LuFe 2 O 4 . Our results shed light on the coexistence and competing nature of orderings in quantum materials.

Polaronic transport and thermoelectricity in Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 single crystals

Here, we carried out a comprehensive study of the structural, electrical transport, thermal, and thermodynamic properties in ferrimagnetic Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 single crystals. Mn and Te K -edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy and synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction were measured to provide information on the local atomic environment and the average crystal structure. The dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a second-order paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic transition at T c ~ 74 K, which is further confirmed by the specific heat measurement. Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 exhibits semiconducting behavior along with a large negative magnetoresistance of -87% at T c and a relatively high value of thermopower up to ~10 mV/K at 5 K. Besides the rapidly increasing resistivity ρ(T) and thermopower S(T) below 20 K, the large discrepancy between the activation energy for resistivity E ρ and thermopower E S above 20 K indicates the polaronic transport mechanism. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity κ(T) of Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 is notably rather low, comparable to Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 , and is strongly suppressed in the magnetic field across T c , indicating the presence of strong spin-lattice coupling, also similar with Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 .

Precision test of statistical dynamics with state-to-state ultracold chemistry

Chemical reactions represent a class of quantum problems that challenge both the current theoretical understanding and computational capabilities1. Reactions that occur at ultralow temperatures provide an ideal testing ground for quantum chemistry and scattering theories, because they can be experimentally studied with unprecedented control, yet display dynamics that are highly complex. Here we report the full product state distribution for the reaction 2KRb → K 2 + Rb 2 . Ultracold preparation of the reactants allows us complete control over their initial quantum degrees of freedom, whereas state-resolved, coincident detection of both products enables the probability of scattering into each of the 57 allowed rotational state-pairs to be measured. Our results show an overall agreement with a state-counting model based on statistical theory, but also reveal several deviating state-pairs. In particular, we observe a strong suppression of population in the state-pair closest to the exoergicity limit as a result of the long-range potential inhibiting the escape of products. Finally, the completeness of our measurements provides a benchmark for quantum dynamics calculations beyond the current state of the art.

Suppression of thermal conductivity and electronic correlations in Fe 1– x Ru x Sb 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.6)

We present simultaneous suppression of FeSb 2 thermal conductivity and electronic correlations in Fe 1– x Ru x Sb 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.6) single crystal alloys. Small energy gap Δ 1 in Kondo-insulator-like semiconductor FeSb 2 associated with impurity in-gap state increases whereas the intrinsic bandgap Δ 2 decreases upon Ru substitution on Fe atomic site. Thermopower is suppressed along with the intrinsic bandgap and with the thermal conductivity. The more delocalized 4 d character of atomic orbital of Ru brings suppression of electronic correlations, but also an increase in impurity density which reduces phonon mean free path and surface scattering length. Our results indicate a range of Ru doping x where nanostructuring could be used to suppress thermal conductivity further, potentially toward the amorphous limit.

Three-dimensional ferromagnetism and magnetotransport in van der Waals Mn-intercalated tantalum disufide

Van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets are an important class of materials for spintronics applications. The recent discovery of atomically vdW magnets CrI 3 and Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 has triggered a renaissance in the area of two-dimensional (2D) magnetism. Herein we systematically studied 2H-Mn 0.28 TaS 2 single crystal, a 2D vdW ferromagnet with T c ~ 82.3K, and a large in-plane magnetic anisotropy. Mn K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy was measured to provide information on its electronic state and local atomic environment. The detailed magnetic isotherms measured in the vicinity of T c indicates that the spin coupling inside 2H-Mn 0.28 TaS 2 is of a 3D Heisenberg type coupled with the attractive long-range interaction between spins that decay as J(r) ≈ r –4.85 . Both resistivity ρ(T) and thermopower S(T) exhibit anomalies near T c , confirming that the hole-type transport carriers strongly interact with local moments. Furthermore, an unusual angle-dependent magnetoresistance is further observed, suggesting a possible field-induced novel magnetic structure.

Anomalous Hall effect in the weak-itinerant ferrimagnet FeCr 2 Te 4

In this study, we carried out a comprehensive study of electronic transport, thermal, and thermodynamic properties in Fe Cr 2 Te 4 single crystals. It exhibits bad-metallic behavior and anomalous Hall effect (AHE) below a weak-itinerant paramagnetic-to-ferrimagnetic transition T c ~ 123 K. The linear scaling between the anomalous Hall resistivity ρ x y and the longitudinal resistivity ρ x x implies that the AHE in Fe Cr 2 Te 4 is most likely dominated by an extrinsic skew-scattering mechanism rather than an intrinsic KL or an extrinsic side-jump mechanism, which is supported by our Berry phase calculations.

Prediction of spin polarized Fermi arcs in quasiparticle interference in CeBi

We predict that CeBi in the ferromagnetic state is a Weyl semimetal. Our calculations within density functional theory show the existence of two pairs of Weyl nodes on the momentum path (0,0,k z ) at 15meV above and 100meV below the Fermi level. Two corresponding Fermi arcs are obtained on surfaces of mirror-symmetric (010)-oriented slabs at E=15meV and both arcs are interrupted into three segments due to hybridization with a set of trivial surface bands. By studying the spin texture of surface states, we find the two Fermi arcs are strongly spin polarized but in opposite directions, which can be detected by spin-polarized ARPES measurements. Here, our theoretical study of quasiparticle interference (QPI) for a nonmagnetic impurity at the Bi site also reveals several features related to the Fermi arcs. Specifically, we predict that the spin polarization of the Fermi arcs leads to a bifurcation-shaped feature only in the spin-dependent QPI spectrum, serving as a fingerprint of the Weyl nodes.

Nuclear spin conservation enables state-to-state control of ultracold molecular reactions

Quantum-state control of reactive systems has enabled microscopic probes of underlying interaction potentials and the alteration of reaction rates using quantum statistics. However, extending such control to the quantum states of reaction outcomes remains challenging. Here in this work, we realize this goal by utilizing the conservation of nuclear spins throughout the reaction. Using resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization spectroscopy to investigate the products formed in bimolecular reactions between ultracold KRb molecules we find that the system retains a near-perfect memory of the reactants’ nuclear spins, manifested as a strong parity preference for the rotational states of the products. We leverage this effect to alter the occupation of these product states by changing the coherent superposition of initial nuclear spin states with an external magnetic field. In this way, we are able to control both the inputs and outputs of a reaction with quantum-state resolution. The techniques demonstrated here open up the possibilities to study quantum entanglement between reaction products, and ultracold reaction dynamics at the state-to-state level.

Robust Adaptive Decentralized Dynamic State Estimation with Unknown Control Inputs using Field PMU Measurements

This paper proposes a robust adaptive decentralized dynamic state estimation method for power system with unknown inputs of the highly detailed synchronous machine model. The temporal and spatial correlations among the unknown inputs are used to derive a vector auto-regressive model. The latter is further integrated together with state transition and measurement models for joint state and unknown inputs estimation. Thanks to the consideration of implicit cross-correlations between the states and the unknown inputs, only generator terminal voltage and current phasors are needed. Test results on the US WECC system using the field PMU measurements show that the proposed method is able to track both the system dynamic states and unknown controller inputs. These information could significantly benefit the validation and calibration of generator controller parameters.

High Fermi velocities and small cyclotron masses in LaAlGe

Here, we report quantum oscillation measurements of LaAlGe, a Lorentz-violating type-II Weyl semimetal with tilted Weyl cones. Very small quasiparticle masses and very high Fermi velocities were detected at the Fermi surface. Whereas three main frequencies have been observed, the angular dependence of two Fermi surface sheets indicates possible two-dimensional (2D) character despite the absence of the 2D structural features such as van der Waals bonds. Such conducting states may offer a good platform for low-dimensional polarized spin current in magnetic RAlGe (R = Ce, Pr) materials.

The fall, recovery, classification, and initial characterization of the Hamburg, Michigan H4 chondrite

Abstract The Hamburg meteorite fell on January 16, 2018, near Hamburg, Michigan, after a fireball event widely observed in the U.S. Midwest and in Ontario, Canada. Several fragments fell onto frozen surfaces of lakes and, thanks to weather radar data, were recovered days after the fall. The studied rock fragments show no or little signs of terrestrial weathering. Here, we present the initial results from an international consortium study to describe the fall, characterize the meteorite, and probe the collision history of Hamburg. About 1 kg of recovered meteorites was initially reported. Petrology, mineral chemistry, trace element and organic chemistry, and O and Cr isotopic compositions are characteristic of H4 chondrites. Cosmic ray exposure ages based on cosmogenic 3 He, 21 Ne, and 38 Ar are ~12 Ma, and roughly agree with each other. Noble gas data as well as the cosmogenic 10 Be concentration point to a small 40–60 cm diameter meteoroid. An 40 Ar‐ 39 Ar age of 4532 ± 24 Ma indicates no major impact event occurring later in its evolutionary history, consistent with data of other H4 chondrites. Microanalyses of phosphates with LA‐ICPMS give an average Pb‐Pb age of 4549 ± 36 Ma. This is in good agreement with the average SIMS Pb‐Pb phosphate age of 4535.3 ± 9.5 Ma and U‐Pb Concordia age of 4535 ± 10 Ma. The weighted average age of 4541.6 ± 9.5 Ma reflects the metamorphic phosphate crystallization age after parent body formation in the early solar system.

Short-Range Order in VI 3

We present a detailed investigation of the crystal structure of VI 3 , a two-dimensional van der Waals material of interest for studies of low-dimensional magnetism. As opposed to the average crystal structure that features $R\bar{3}$ symmetry of the unit cell, our Raman scattering and X-ray atomic pair distribution function analysis supported by density functional theory calculations point to the coexistence of short-range ordered $P\bar{3}$1c and long-range ordered $R\bar{3}$phases. The highest-intensity peak, A 1g 3 , exhibits a moderate asymmetry that might be traced back to the spin–phonon interactions, as in the case of CrI 3 .
