Valence band electronic structure of the van der Waals ferromagnetic insulators: VI 3 and CrI 3

Ferromagnetic van der Waals (vdW) insulators are of great scientific interest for their promising applications in spintronics. It has been indicated that in the two materials within this class, CrI 3 and VI 3 , the magnetic ground state, the band gap, and the Fermi level could be manipulated by varying the layer thickness, strain or doping. To understand how these factors impact the properties, a detailed understanding of the electronic structure would be required. However, the experimental studies of the electronic structure of these materials are still very sparse. Here, we present the detailed electronic structure of CrI 3 and VI 3 measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Our results show a band-gap of the order of 1 eV, sharply contrasting some theoretical predictions such as Dirac half-metallicity and metallic phases, indicating that the intra-atomic interaction parameter (U) and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) were not properly accounted for in the calculations. We also find significant differences in the electronic properties of these two materials, in spite of similarities in their crystal structure. In CrI 3 , the valence band maximum is dominated by the I 5p, whereas in VI 3 it is dominated by the V 3d derived states. Our results represent valuable input for further improvements in the theoretical modeling of these systems.

Complete Strain Mapping of Nanosheets of Tantalum Disulfide

Quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) materials hold promise for future electronics because of their unique band structuresthat result in electronic and mechanical properties sensitive to crystal strains in all three dimensions. Quantifying crystal strain is a prerequisite to correlating it with the performance of the device, and calls for high resolution but spatially resolved rapid characterization methods. Here we show that using fly-scan nano X-ray diffraction we can accomplish a tensile strain sensitivity below 0.001% with a spatial resolution of better than 80 nm over a spatial extent of 100 µm on quasi 2D flakes of 1T-TaS2. Coherent diffraction patterns were collected from a ~100 nm thick sheet of 1T-TaS2 by scanning 12keV focused X-ray beam across and rotating the sample. We demonstrate that the strain distribution around micron and sub-micron sized ‘bubbles’ that are present in the sample may be reconstructed from these images. The experiments use state of the art synchrotron instrumentation, and will allow rapid and non-intrusive strain mapping of thin film samples and electronic devices based on quasi 2D materials.

Room‐Temperature Skyrmion Thermopower in Fe 3 Sn 2

Abstract We present the room‐temperature thermoelectric signature of skyrmion bubbles. This is observed in Fe 3 Sn 2 , a Kagome Dirac crystal with massive Dirac fermions that features a high‐temperature skyrmion phase. The room‐temperature skyrmion bubbles show magnetic‐field dependence of the wavevector whereas the thermopower is dominated by the electronic diffusion mechanism, allowing for the skyrmionic bubble detection. The results pave the way for future skyrmion‐based devices based on the manipulation of the thermal gradient.

Localised instability of titanium during its erosion-corrosion in simulated acidic hydrometallurgical slurries

Electrochemical techniques were used to investigate the erosion-corrosion of titanium in simulated acidic mineral leaching slurries. Erosion-corrosion of titanium was caused by solid particle impingement. Electrochemical noise revealed that solid particle impacts resulted in localised fracture of the passive film, and erosion-corrosion of titanium proceeded in the form of current transients. As conditions become more abrasive, erosion-corrosion is an increasing threat to titanium equipment exposed to acidic slurries.

Three-dimensional Ising ferrimagnetism of Cr-Fe-Cr trimers in FeCr2Te4

We carried out a comprehensive study of magnetic critical behavior in single crystals of ternary chalcogenide Fe Cr 2 Te 4 that undergoes a ferrimagnetic transition below T c ~ 123 K. Detailed critical behavior analysis and scaled magnetic entropy change indicate a second-order ferrimagnetic transition. Critical exponents β = 0.30 ( 1 ) with T c = 122.4 ( 5 ) K , γ = 1.22 ( 1 ) with T c = 122.8 ( 1 ) K , and δ = 4.24 ( 2 ) at T c ~ 123 K suggest that the spins approach the three-dimensional Ising ( β = 0.325 , γ = 1.24 , and δ = 4.82 ) model coupled with attractive long-range interactions between spins that decay as J ( r ) ≈ r - 4.88 . Our results suggest that the ferrimagnetism in Fe Cr 2 Te 4 is due to itinerant ferromagnetism among the antiferromagnetically coupled Cr-Fe-Cr trimers.

Vacancies and spin-phonon coupling in CrSi 0.8 Ge 0.1 Te 3

We report temperature-dependent Raman scattering and magnetization studies of van der Waals ferromagnetic compound CrSi 0.8 Ge 0.1 Te 3 . Magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed dominant ferromagnetic interactions below T C which shift to the lower values due to the presence of vacancies. A Raman active mode, additional to the ones predicted by symmetry in the parent compounds, has been observed. This A g symmetry mode most likely emerges as a consequence of the atomic vacancies on Si/Ge site. Presence of the strong spin–phonon coupling at temperature around 210 K is indicated by deviations from conventional phonon self-energy temperature dependence of all analysed modes.

Photo-excitation of long-lived transient intermediates in ultracold reactions

In many chemical reactions, the transformation from reactants to products is mediated by transient intermediate complexes. For gas-phase reactions involving molecules with a few atoms, these complexes typically live on the order of 10 ps or less before dissociating, and are therefore rarely influenced by external processes. Here, we demonstrate that the transient intermediate complex K 2 Rb 2 *, formed from collisions between ultracold KRb molecules, undergoes rapid photo-excitation in the presence of a continuous-wave laser source at 1,064 nm, a wavelength commonly used to confine ultracold molecules. These excitations are facilitated by the exceptionally long lifetime of the complex under ultracold conditions. Indeed, by monitoring the change in the complex population after the sudden removal of the excitation light, we directly measure the lifetime of the complex to be 360 ± 30 ns, in agreement with our calculations based on the Rice–Ramsperger–Kassel–Marcus (RRKM) statistical theory. Furthermore, our results shed light on the origin of the two-body loss widely observed in ultracold molecule experiments. Additionally, the long complex lifetime, coupled with the observed photo-excitation pathway, opens up the possibility to spectroscopically probe the structure of the complex with high resolution, thus elucidating the reaction dynamics.

Anisotropic magnetocaloric effect and critical behavior in CrCl 3

We report anisotropic magnetocaloric effect and magnetic critical behavior in the van der Waals crystal CrCl 3 . The maximum magnetic entropy change $-ΔS^{max}_M ~ 14.6 J kg -1 K -1 and the relative cooling power RCP ~ 340.3 J kg -1 near T c with a magnetic field change of 5 T are much larger when compared to CrI 3 or CrBr 3 . The rescaled ΔS M (T, H) curves collapse onto a universal curve, confirming the second-order ferromagnetic transition. Finally, further critical behavior analysis around T c presents a set of critical exponents β = 0.28 (1) with T c = 19.4 (2) K, γ = 0.89 (1) with T c = 18.95 (8) K, and δ = 4.6 (1) at T c = 19 K , which are close to those of the theoretical tricritical mean-field model.

Anisotropic magnetocaloric effect and critical behavior in CrSbSe3

In this work, we report anisotropic magnetocaloric effect and critical behavior in a quasi-one-dimensional ferromagnetic CrSbSe 3 single crystal. The maximum magnetic entropy change - Δ S M max is 2.16 J kg - 1 K - 1 for the easy a axis (2.03 J kg - 1 K - 1 for the hard b axis) and the relative cooling power RCP is 163.1 J kg - 1 for the easy a axis (142.1 J kg - 1 for the hard b axis) near T c with a magnetic field change of 50 kOe. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant K u is estimated to be 148.5 kJ m - 3 at 10 K, decreasing to 39.4 kJ m - 3 at 70 K. The rescaled Δ S M ( T , H ) curves along all three axes collapse onto a universal curve, respectively, confirming the second-order ferromagnetic transition. Further critical behavior analysis around T c ~ 70 K gives that the critical exponents β = 0.26 ( 1 ) , γ = 1.32 ( 2 ) , and δ = 6.17 ( 9 ) for H ∥ a , while β = 0.28 ( 2 ) , γ = 1.02 ( 1 ) , and δ = 4.14 ( 16 ) for H ∥ b . The determined critical exponents suggest that the anisotropic magnetic coupling in CrSbSe 3 is strongly dependent on orientations of the applied magnetic field.

Understanding cloud droplet spectral dispersion effect using empirical and semi-analytical parameterizations in NCAR CAM5.3

Five parameterizations of cloud droplet spectral shape are implemented in a global climate model to investigate the dispersion effect and aerosol indirect effect (AIE). We design a series of experiments by modifying the microphysical cloud scheme of NCAR CAM5.3 (Community Atmospheric Model Version 5.3). We employ four empirical (Martin94, RLiu03, PengL03, Liu08) and one semi-analytical (LiuLi15) expressions for cloud droplet spectral shape parameters. Analysis focuses on the instantaneous differences in the simulated cloud microphysical properties and the comparison between model output and satellite data. The results show that RLiu03, PengL03 and LiuLi15 produce wider droplet spectrum and faster autoconversion rate, but Liu08 has a narrower droplet spectrum and slower autoconversion rate than the default parameterization (Martin94) in CAM5.3. Global dispersion effects caused by the five parameterizations modify the aerosol indirect effect by -10% (counteract) to 13% (strengthen). The simulated AIEs and dispersion effects exhibit noticeably spatial inhomogeneity. In the sensitive regions of AIE (Southeast Asia, North Pacific and west coast of South America), we decompose the response of shortwave cloud forcing to the change in droplet number for analysis. The varying dispersion effects can be explained by different responses of cloud properties in different spectral parameterizations.

Three-dimensional Fermi surface and small effective masses in Mo 8 Ga 41

We report Fermi surface characteristics of Mo 8 Ga 41 , a two-gap superconductor with critical temperature T c ~10 K, obtained from quantum oscillation measurements. Four major frequencies have been observed with relatively small quastiparticle masses. Angular dependence of major frequencies indicates three-dimensional Fermi surface sheets. This argues for a relatively isotropic superconducting state and, given its relatively high T c , shows that a search for new materials in this class could be of interest for superconducting wire applications.

Spin-Triplet Excitonic Insulator: The Case of Semihydrogenated Graphene

While various excitonic insulators have been studied in the literature, due to the perceived too-small spin splitting, spin-triplet excitonic insulator is rare. In two-dimensional systems such as a semihydrogenated graphene (known as graphone), however, it is possible, as revealed by first-principles calculations coupled with Bethe-Salpeter equation. Here, the critical temperature, given by an effective Hamiltonian, is 11.5 K. While detecting excitonic insulators is still a daunting challenge, the condensation of triplet excitons will result in spin superfluidity, which can be directly measured by a transport experiment. Nonlocal dielectric screening also leads to an unexpected phenomenon, namely, an indirect-to-direct transition crossover between single-particle band and exciton dispersion in the semihydrogenated graphene, which offers yet another test by experiment.

Author Correction: Thickness-dependent magnetic order in CrI3 single crystals

Two-dimensional (2D) materials with intrinsic ferromagnetism provide unique opportunity to engineer new functionalities in nano-spintronics. One such material is CrI3, showing long-range magnetic order in monolayer with the Curie temperature (Tc) of 45 K. Here we study detailed evolution of magnetic transition and magnetic critical properties in response to systematic reduction in crystal thickness down to 50 nm. Bulk Tc of 61 K is gradually suppressed to 57 K, however, the satellite transition at T * = 45 K is observed layer-independent at fixed magnetic field of 1 kOe. The origin of T * is proposed to be a crossover from pinning to depinning of magnetic domain walls. The reduction of thickness facilitates a field-driven metamagnetic transition around 20 kOe with out-of-plane field, in contrast to the continuous changes with in-plane field. The critical analysis around Tc elucidates the mean-field type interactions in microscale-thick CrI3.

The Sariçiçek Howardite Fall in Turkey: Source Crater of HED Meteorites on Vesta and Impact Risk of Vestoids

The Sariçiçek howardite meteorite shower consisting of 343 documented stones occurred on September 2, 2015 in Turkey and is the first documented howardite fall. Cosmogenic isotopes show that Sariçiçek experienced a complex cosmic‐ray exposure history, exposed during ~12–14 Ma in a regolith near the surface of a parent asteroid, and that an ~1 m sized meteoroid was launched by an impact 22 ± 2 Ma ago to Earth (as did one‐third of all HED meteorites). SIMS dating of zircon and baddeleyite yielded 4550.4 ± 2.5 Ma and 4553 ± 8.8 Ma crystallization ages for the basaltic magma clasts. The apatite U‐Pb age of 4525 ± 17 Ma, K‐Ar age of ~3.9 Ga, and the U,Th‐He ages of 1.8 ± 0.7 and 2.6 ± 0.3 Ga are interpreted to represent thermal metamorphic and impact‐related resetting ages, respectively. Petrographic; geochemical; and O‐, Cr‐, and Ti‐isotopic studies confirm that Sariçiçek belongs to the normal clan of HED meteorites. Petrographic observations and analysis of organic material indicate a small portion of carbonaceous chondrite material in the Sariçiçek regolith and organic contamination of the meteorite after a few days on soil. Video observations of the fall show an atmospheric entry at 17.3 ± 0.8 km/s from NW; fragmentations at 37, 33, 31, and 27 km altitude; and provide a pre‐atmospheric orbit that is the first dynamical link between the normal HED meteorite clan and the inner Main Belt. Spectral data indicate the similarity of Sariçiçek with the Vesta asteroid family (V‐class) spectra, a group of asteroids stretching to delivery resonances, which includes (4) Vesta. Dynamical modeling of meteoroid delivery to Earth shows that the complete disruption of a ~1 km sized Vesta family asteroid or a ~10 km sized impact crater on Vesta is required to provide sufficient meteoroids ≤4 m in size to account for the influx of meteorites from this HED clan. The 16.7 km diameter Antionia impact crater on Vesta was formed on terrain of the same age as given by the 4He retention age of Sariçiçek. Lunar scaling for crater production to crater counts of its ejecta blanketshow it was formed ~22 Ma ago.
