AIN-Coated Al(2)O(3) Substrates For Electronic Circuits

Type of improved ceramic substrate for high-frequency, high-power electronic circuits combines relatively high thermal conductivity of aluminum nitride with surface smoothness of alumina. Consists of 15-micrometer layer of AIN deposited on highly polished alumina. Used for packaging millimeter-wave gallium arsenide transmitter chips, power silicon chips, and like.

Wide-angle X-ray scattering study of heat-treated PEEK and PEEK composite

Samples of poly(etheretherketone) (PEEK) neat resin and APC-2 carbon fiber composite were subjected to various heat treatments, and the effect of quenching and annealing treatments was studied by wide-angle X-ray scattering. It is found that high-temperature treatments may introduce disorder into neat resin and composite PEEK when followed by rapid cooling. The disorder is metastable and can revert to ordered state when the material is heated above its glass transition temperature and then cooled slowly. The disorder may result from residual thermal stresses.

Effects of radiation damage on the silicon lattice

Silicon was irradiated with both proton and electron particle beams in order to investigate changes in the structural and optical properties of the lattice as a result of the radiation damage. Lattice expansions occurred when large strain fields (+0.34 percent) developed after 1- and 3-MeV proton bombardment. The strain was a factor of three less after 1-MeV electron irradiation. Average increases of approximately 22 meV in the 3.46-eV interband energy gap and 14 meV in the Lorentz broadening parameter were measured after the electron irradiation.
