TEM Analysis of Diffusion-Bonded Silicon Carbide Ceramics Joined Using Metallic Interlayers

Silicon Carbide (SiC) is a promising material for thermostructural applications due to its excellent high-temperature mechanical properties, oxidation resistance, and thermal stability. However, joining and integration technologies are indispensable for this material in order to fabricate large size and complex shape components with desired functionalities. Although diffusion bonding techniques using metallic interlayers have been commonly utilized to bond various SiC ceramics, detailed microstructural observation by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) of the bonded area has not been carried out due to difficulty in preparing TEM samples. In this study, we tried to prepare TEM samples from joints of diffusion bonded SiC ceramics by Focused Ion Beam (FIB) system and carefully investigated the interfacial microstructure by TEM analysis. The samples used in this study were SiC fiber bonded ceramics (SA-Tyrannohex: SA-THX) diffusion bonded with metallic interlayers such as Ti, TiMo, Mo-B and TiCu. In this presentation, we report the microstructure of diffusion bonded SA-THX mainly with TiCu interlayers obtained by TEM observations, and the influence of metallic interlayers on the joint microstructure and microhardness will be discussed.

TEM Analysis of Diffusion-Bonded Silicon Carbide Ceramics Joined Using Metallic Interlayers

SiC fiber-bonded ceramics (SA-Tyrannohex: SA-THX) diffusion-bonded with TiCu metallic interlayers were investigated. Thin samples of the ceramics were prepared with a focused ion beam (FIB) and the interfacial microstructure of the prepared samples was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning TEM (STEM). In addition to conventional microstructure observation, for detailed analysis of reaction compounds in diffusion-bonded area, we performed STEM-EDS measurements and selected area electron diffraction (SAD) experiments. The TEM and STEM experiments revealed the diffusion-bonded area was composed of only one reaction layer, which was characterized by TiC precipitates in Cu-Si compound matrix. This reaction layer was in good contact with the SA-THX substrates, and it is concluded that the joint structure led to the excellent bonding strength.

Production of New Trabecular Bone in Osteopenic Ovariectomized Rats by Prostaglandin E2

Serum chemistry and bone morphometry of the proximal tibial metaphysis were performed in 3 month-old double fluorescent-labeled, female Sprague-Dawley rats subjected to bilateral ovariectomy or sham surgery for 4 months prior to treatment with 0, 0.3, 1,3, or 6 mg of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2)/kg/day subcutaneously for 30 days. The 4 month postovariectomized rats possessed an osteopenic proximal tibial metaphysis with 7% trabecular area compared with controls (19%). PGE2 treatment elevated osteocalcin levels and augmented proximal tibial metaphyseal bone area in ovariectomized and sham-operated rats. Osteopenic, ovariectomized rats treated with 6 mg (PGE2)/kg/day for 30 days restored bone area to levels of agematched sham-operated rats. Morphometric analyses showed increased woven and lamellar bone area, fluorescent-labeled perimeter (osteoblastic recruitment), mineral apposition rate (osteoblastic activity), bone formation rate (BFR/BV), and longitudinal bone growth. These dramatic bone changes were all significantly increased at the doseresponse manner. This study showed that in vivo PGE2 is a powerful activator of bone remodeling, it increases both bone resorption and bone formation, and produces an anabolic effect by shifting bone balance to the positive direction. Furthermore, PGE2-induced augmentation of metaphyseal bone area in ovariectomized rats was at least two times greater than in sham-operated rats.

Cosmic ray sidereal diurnal variation of galactic origin observed by neutron monitors

Cosmic ray sidereal diurnal variations observed by neutron monitors are analyzed for the period 1961 to 1978, by adding 134 station years data to the previous paper (Nagashima, et al., 1983). Also the dependence of the sidereal variations on Sun's polar magnetic field polarity is examined for two periods; the period of negative polarity in the northern region, 1961 to 1969 and the period of positive polarity, 1970 to 1978. It is obtained that for the former period, the amplitude A=0.0203 + or 0.0020% and the phase phi=6.1 + or - 0.4 h LST and for the latter period, 0.0020% and phi=8.6 + or - 4 h LST, respectively.

Sidereal anisotropies in the median rigidity range 60-600GV in 1978-1983

Observed sidereal variations are corrected for the influence of spurious variation by a method using the antisidereal diurnal variations produced from the same 2nd order anisotropy (Nagashima, et al., 1983). It is demonstrated that the corrected variations are a resultant product of two constituents of galactic origin: one is north-south (N-S) symmetric and the other is N-S asymmetric.

Cosmic ray intensity variations observed at Matsushiro (220 M.W.E. in depth)

Cosmic ray data from Matsushiro underground station were analyzed for four years (1981 to 84). It is found that a marked semi-annual intensity variation has been observed in this period. Solar diurnal and semi-diurnal variations have also been observed. After correcting for the spurious sidereal diurnal variation arising from the anisotropy responsible for the solar semi-diurnal variation (Nagashima et al., 1983), it is found that the corrected sidereal diurnal variation is consistent with those so far reported.

Solar tri-diurnal variation of cosmic rays in a wide range of rigidity

Solar tri-diurnal variations of cosmic rays have been analyzed in a wide range of rigidity, using data from neutron monitors, and the surface and underground muon telescopes for the period 1978-1983. The rigidity spectrum of the anisotropy in space is assumed to be of power-exponential type as (P/gamma P sub o) to the gamma exp (gamma-P/P sub o). By means of the best-fit method between the observed and the expected variations, it is obtained that the spectrum has a peak at P (=gamma P sub o) approx = 90 GV, where gamma=approx 3.0 and P sub o approx. 30 GV. The phase in space of the tri-diurnal variation is also obtained as 7.0 hr (15 hr and 23 hr LT), which is quite different from that of approx. 1 hr. arising from the axisymmetric distribution of cosmic rays with respect to the IMF.

Anomalous increase of solar anisotropy above 150GV in 1981-1983

An analysis was carried out of the observed data with Nagoya (surface). Misato (34mwe) and Sakashita (80mwe) multidirectional muon telescope, for the solar activity maximum period of 1978-1983. These data respond to primaries extending over the median rigidity range 60GV to 600GV. The observed amplitude at Sakashita station in 1981-1983 increased, especially in 1982; the amplitude is twice as large as that in 1978-1980, when those at Nagoya and Misato stations are nearly the same as those in 1978-1980. Uni-directional anisotropy is derived by the best fit method by assuming the flat rigidity spectrum with the upper cutoff rigidity Pu. The value of Pu obtained is 270GV in 1981-1983 and 150GV in 1978-1980.

Study of crevice-galvanic corrosion of aluminum

Corrosion effects of aluminum-copper and aluminum-nickel couples in oxygenated distilled water, and aluminum alloys in oxygenated copper sulfate solution were studied. One of each of the couples had a water tight seal, and showed no substantial corrosion, and of the unsealed couples, only the aluminum-copper developed corrosion.
