The current status of and future outlook for the NASA space program

A brief general overview of NASA programs and planning is presented. Topics discussed include long-term policy goals (creating commercial opportunities, construction of the International Space Station, and manned planetary missions), the scientific and technological projects planned for the Space Station, the key role of the Space Station in solar-system exploration, the pathfinder-technologies concept, and the comprehensive remote-sensing program Mission to Planet Earth.

NASA's management concept for the Space Shuttle Program.

An overview of the Shuttle Program organization and management concepts suggests the necessity of careful measurements of contractor schedules, cost and technical performance, and program modification control to keep both the development and operating cost of the Program at the lowest possible level. Maximum use of the contractors' own management systems and the utilization of new technologies, procedures and materials during space operations are also envisaged as contributors to the reduction of costs per flight to acceptable limits.

Space flight operations for world development.

Mission objectives, hardware development efforts, and aspects of international cooperation are covered in an outline of space flight programs planned by the United States for the forthcoming decade. Scientific experiments envisioned for the Apollo 17 mission and for the Skylab program are discussed along with the current status of the joint Apollo/Soyuz test project specified by the U.S.-USSR space agreement of May 1972. The Space Shuttle, Space Tug, and Sortie Laboratory projects are outlined with emphasis on the use of experience and hardware gained in earlier phases of this space program.

The space shuttle

Two objectives of the space shuttle, or reusable reentry vehicle, are economy and the speed with which it can be made operational. Its mission will be carried out in six stages: launching, separation of the fuel tank, separation of the booster, placing the payload in orbit, return to the atmosphere, and the actual landing. The major element, the orbiter, is described. Some aspects of European participation in the program are discussed.
