Quasi-monoenergetic ion acceleration and neutron generation from laser-driven transverse collisionless shocks

Experiments using the OMEGA EP laser system were performed to study collisionless shock acceleration of ions driven by the interaction of a relativistically intense laser pulse with underdense plasma. The energy spectrum of accelerated ions in the direction transverse to laser propagation is measured to have several narrow-band peaks which are quasi-monoenergetic with a typical energy bandwidth of 3%. In deuterium plasmas, these ions generate a significant number of fast fusion neutrons. Particle-in-cell simulations confirm that these ions were accelerated by the interaction of transverse shocks and that the appearance of quasi-monoenergetic spectral features depends on the growth of an ion-electron two-stream instability during the interaction.

Formation of collisionless shocks driven by strongly magnetized relativistic electrons in the laboratory

In experiments performed with the OMEGA EP laser system, proton deflectometry captured magnetic field dynamics consistent with collisionless shock formation driven by strongly magnetized relativistic electrons. During laser-foil interactions, shocks can form as relativistic electrons and strong surface magnetic fields generated by a short-pulse laser impinge on a cooler plasma produced by a longer-pulse laser. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations reproduce the magnetic draping and fast formation speeds measured in the experiment and reveal that this relativistic-electron-driven shock forms at an interface that is unstable to shear and streaming instabilities. The simulation results provide insight into the microphysics that may influence high-energy shocks observed in extreme astrophysical environments. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Ionization disequilibrium in K- and L-shell ions

Time-gated Sc K-shell and Ge L-shell spectra are presented from a range of characterized thermodynamic states spanning ion densities of 1019–1020cm−3 and plasma temperatures around 2000 eV. For the higher densities studied and temperatures from 1000 to 3000 eV, the Sc and Ge x-ray emission spectra are consistent with steady-state calculations from the modern atomic kinetics model SCRAM. At the lower ion densities achieved through plasma expansion, however, the model calculations require a higher plasma temperature to reproduce the observed Ge spectrum. We attribute this to ionization disequilibrium of the Sc because the ionization time scales exceed the hydrodynamic timescale when the inferred temperatures diverge.
