Thermomechanical buckling and postbuckling of multilayered composite panels

A study is made of the thermomechanical buckling and postbuckling responses of flat unstiffened composite panels. The panels are subjected to combined temperature change and applied edge displacement. The analysis is based on a first-order shear deformation, von Karman type nonlinear plate theory. A mixed formulation is used with the fundamental unknowns consisting of the generalized displacements and the stress resultants of the plate. An efficient multiple-parameter reduction method is used in conjunction with mixed finite element models, for determining the stability boundary and postbuckling response. The reduction method is also used for evaluating the sensitivity coefficients which measure the sensitivity of the buckling and postbuckling responses to variations in the different lamination and material parameters of the panel. Numerical results are presented showing the effects of variations in the laminate stacking sequence, fiber orientation, number of layers and aspect ratio of the panels on their thermomechanical buckling and postbuckling responses and their sensitivity coefficients.

Computational structures technology

Computational structures technology (CST), which has emerged from FEM developments, is a fusion of materials modeling, structural and dynamic analysis and synthesis methods, on the one hand, and numerical analysis and approximation theory, on the other. In addition to computational materials modeling, CST encompasses computational methods for predicting the response, performance, failure, and service life of structures and their components, as well as automated methods for structural synthesis and optimization.

Postbuckling of multilayered composite plates subjected to combined axial and thermal loads

A study is made of the postbuckling response of composite plates subjected to combined axial and thermal loadings. The analysis is based on a first-order shear deformation, von Karman type of nonlinear plate theory. A mixed formulation is used with the fundamental unknowns consisting of the generalized displacements and the stress resultants of the plate. An efficient reduction method is used in conjunction with mixed finite element models for determining the stability boundary and the postbuckling response of the plate. Sensitivity derivatives are evaluated and used to study the sensitivity of the postbuckling response to variations in the different lamination and material parameters of the plate. For quasi-isotropic plates, numerical results are presented showing the effects of variations in the material characteristics and fiber orientation of individual layers on the postbuckling response of the plate.

Stiffness and thermoelastic coefficients for composite laminates

Simple analytic expressions are presented for the stiffness and thermoelastic coefficients of composite laminates in terms of the material properties of the individual layers. Expressions for the derivatives of the various coefficients with respect to each of the material properties and fiber orientation angles are also included. For typical high-performance composites, numerical values are given showing the effects of the stacking sequence and the fiber orientation angle of quasi-isotropic and angle-ply laminates on the values of the various coefficients and their sensitivity derivatives. The expressions for the thermoelastic coefficients and the sensitivity derivatives are given herein for the first time.

Strategies for large scale structural problems on high-performance computers

Novel computational strategies are presented for the analysis of large and complex structures. The strategies are based on generating the response of the complex structure using large perturbations from that of a simpler model, associated with a simpler structure (or a simpler mathematical/discrete model of the original structure). Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the strategies developed.

Free vibrations of thin-walled semicircular graphite-epoxy composite frames

A detailed study is made of the effects of variations in lamination and material parameters of thin-walled composite frames on their vibrational characteristics. The structures considered are semicircular thin-walled frames with I and J sections. The flanges and webs of the frames are modeled by using two-dimensional shell and plate finite elements. A mixed formulation is used with the fundamental unknowns consisting of both the generalized displacements and stress resultants in the frame. The frequencies and modes predicted by the two-dimensional finite-element model are compared with those obtained from experiments, as well as with the predictions of a one-dimensional, thin-walled-beam, finite-element model. A detailed study is made of the sensitivity of the vibrational response to variations in the fiber orientation, material properties of the individual layers, and boundary conditions.

Analytical studies of the Space Shuttle orbiter nose-gear tire

A computational procedure is presented for evaluating the analytic sensitivity derivatives of the tire response with respect to material and geometrical properties of the tire. The tire is modeled by using a two-dimensional laminated anisotropic shell theory with the effects of variation in material and geometric parameters included. The computational procedure is applied to the case of the Space Shuttle orbiter nose-gear tire subjected to uniform inflation pressure. Numerical results are presented which show the sensitivity of the different tire response quantities to variations in the material characteristics of both the cord and rubber.

A study is made of the thermal postbuckling response of composite stiffeners subjected to prescribed edge displacement and a temperature rise. The flanges and web of the stiffeners are modeled by using two-dimensional plate finite elements. A mixed formulation is used with the fundamental unknowns consisting of the generalized displacements and the stress resultants of the plate. A reduction method is used in conjunction with mixed finite element models for determining the postbuckling response of the stiffeners. Sensitivity derivatives are evaluated and used to study the effects of variations in the different lamination and material parameters of the stiffeners on their postbuckling response characteristics. Numerical studies are presented for anisotropic stiffeners with Zee and channel sections.

Modeling and analysis of the space shuttle nose-gear tire with semianalytic finite elements

A computational procedure is presented for the geometrically nonlinear analysis of aircraft tires. The Space Shuttle Orbiter nose gear tire was modeled by using a two-dimensional laminated anisotropic shell theory with the effects of variation in material and geometric parameters included. The four key elements of the procedure are: (1) semianalytic finite elements in which the shell variables are represented by Fourier series in the circumferential direction and piecewise polynominals in the meridional direction; (2) a mixed formulation with the fundamental unknowns consisting of strain parameters, stress-resultant parameters, and generalized displacements; (3) multilevel operator splitting to effect successive simplifications, and to uncouple the equations associated with different Fourier harmonics; and (4) multilevel iterative procedures and reduction techniques to generate the response of the shell. Numerical results of the Space Shuttle Orbiter nose gear tire model are compared with experimental measurements of the tire subjected to inflation loading.

Assessment of computational models for multilayered composite shells

A review is made of the different approaches used for modeling multilayered composite shells. Discussion focuses on different approaches for developing two-dimensional shear deformation theories; classification of two-dimensional theories based on introducing plausible displacement, strain and/or stress assumptions in the thickness direction; first-order shear deformation theories based on linear displacement assumptions in the thickness coordinate; and efficient computational strategies for anisotropic composite shells. Extensive numerical results are presented showing the effects of variation in the lamination and geometric parameters of simply supported composite cylinders on the accuracy of the static and vibrational responses predicted by eight different modeling approaches (based on two-dimensional shear deformation theories).

Three-dimensional solutions for antisymmetrically laminated anisotropic plates

Analytic three-dimensional elasticity solutions are presented for the stress and free vibration problems of multilayered anisotropic plates. The plates are assumed to have rectangular geometry and antisymmetric lamination with respect to the middle plane. A mixed formulation is used with the fundamental unknowns consisting of the six stress components and the three displacement components of the plate. Each of the plate variables is decomposed into symmetric and antisymmetric components in the thickness direction, and is expressed in terms of a double Fourier series in the Cartesian surface coordinates. Extensive numerical results are presented showing the effects of variation in the lamination and geometric parameters of composite plates on the importance of the transverse stress and strain components.
