LaFeSi–LaFe 13-x Si x composites: Modulating magnetic and magnetocaloric properties through inherent stress manipulation

We examine structural and magnetic properties of a series of La–Fe–Si alloys in the region of concentrations where they naturally form two-phase LaFeSi–LaFe 13-x Si x composites with variable content and connectivity of LaFe 13-x Si x grains distributed within the LaFeSi matrix. Theoretical calculations confirm that the LaFeSi constituent is magnetically and structurally inert below room temperature and at pressures between -10 and 10 GPa. The LaFe 13-x Si x constituent, on the other hand, is magnetically and structurally active: it exhibits first-order magnetostructural transformations that, in addition to x Si , can be controlled with temperature, magnetic field, and pressure. In composites where the concentration of the inactive constituent is ~70 wt. % or greater, the standard, single-step, LaFe 13-x Si x first-order phase transformation proceeds in two steps separated by over 30 K in a zero magnetic field. Increasing the magnetic field recouples the two steps and restores the single-step phase transformation pathway. We analyze the roles of stresses caused by both thermal expansion mismatch and the first-order magnetic phase transition in LaFe 13-x Si x to rationalize the observed physical behaviors that emerge as the temperature or/and magnetic field vary.

Highly tunable, inexpensive and easily fabricated magnetocaloric materials

A method is provided of making a magnetocaloric alloy composition comprising Ni, Co, Mn, and Ti, which preferably includes certain beneficial substitutional elements, by melting the composition and rapidly solidifying the melted composition at a cooling rate of at least 100 K/second (Kelvin/second) to improve a magnetocaloric property of the composition. The rapidly solidified composition can be heat treated to homogenize the composition and annealed to tune the magneto-structural transition for use in a regenerator.

Structure and properties of NdCuGa 3 single crystals

Here this manuscript reports on the structural and magnetic properties of NdCuGa 3 using powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), zero-field single crystal neutron diffraction, magnetization, and specific heat measurements. Our XRD on a single crystal specimen of NdCuGa3 confirmed that it crystallizes in the tetragonal BaNiSi 3 -type structure. A magnetic phase transition at T N = 3.3 K is assessed using specific heat and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements. No additional anomaly below T N down to 50 mK was detected by performing specific heat measurements. Neutron single crystal diffraction data collected at T = 300 mK confirm the antiferromagnetic phase below T N = 3.3 K with the propagation vector $\vec{\tau}$ = (0.2, 0, 0). Possible magnetic structure solutions of NdCuGa 3 are discussed

Interplay Between Kondo and Magnetic Interactions in Pr 0.75 Gd 0.25 ScGeH

Combined experimental and density functional theory (DFT) study of Pr 0.75 Gd 0.25 ScGe and its hydride (Pr 0.75 Gd 0.25 ScGeH) reveals intricacies of composition-structure-property relationships in those distinctly layered compounds. Hydrogenation of the intermetallic parent, crystalizing in a tetragonal CeScSi-type structure, leads to an anisotropic volume expansion, that is, a(=b) lattice parameter decreases while the lattice expands along the c direction, yielding a net increase of cell volume. DFT calculations predict an antiparallel coupling of localized Gd and Pr magnetic moments in both materials at the ground state. While experiments corroborate this for the parent compound, there is no conclusive experimental proof for the hydride, where Pr moments do not order down to 3 K. DFT results also reveal that rare-earth – hydrogen interactions reduce spin-polarization of the Pr and Gd 5d and Sc 3d states at the Fermi energy, disrupt indirect exchange interactions mediated by conduction electrons, dramatically reduce the magnetic ordering temperature, and open a pseudo-gap in the majority-spin channel. Here, both experiments and theory show evidence of Kondo-like behavior in the hydride in the absence of an applied magnetic field, whereas increasing the field promotes magnetic ordering and suppresses Kondo-like behavior.

Electrocatalyst for water electrolysis

A cathode is provided for electrolysis of water wherein the cathode material comprises a multi-principal element, transition metal dichalcogenide material that has four or more chemical elements and that is a single phase, solid solution. The pristine cathode material does not contain platinum as a principal (major) component. However, a cathode comprising a transition metal dichalcogenide having platinum (Pt) nanosized islands or precipitates disposed thereon is also provided.
