Mg x Zn 1−x O contact to CuGa 3 Se 5 absorber for photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical devices

Abstract CuGa 3 Se 5 is a promising candidate material with wide band gap for top cells in tandem photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices. However, traditional CdS contact layers used with other chalcopyrite absorbers are not suitable for CuGa 3 Se 5 due to the higher position of its conduction band (CB) minimum. Mg x Zn 1− x O (MZO) is a transparent oxide with adjustable band gap and CB position as a function of magnesium composition, but its direct application is hindered by CuGa 3 Se 5 surface oxidation. Here, MZO is investigated as a contact (n-type ‘buffer’ or ‘window’) material to CuGa 3 Se 5 absorbers pretreated in Cd 2+ solution, and an onset potential close to 1 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode in 10 mM hexaammineruthenium (III) chloride electrolyte is demonstrated. The Cd 2+ surface treatment changes the chemical composition and electronic structure of the CuGa 3 Se 5 surface, as demonstrated by photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. The performance of CuGa 3 Se 5 absorber with Cd 2+ treated surface in the solid-state test structure depends on the Zn/Mg ratio in the MZO layer. The measured open circuit voltage of 925 mV is promising for tandem PEC water splitting with CuGa 3 Se 5 /MZO top cells.

Nucleation of High-Quality GaP on Si Through V-Groove Si Substrates

III-V growth on nanopatterned v-groove Si is a promising route to low cost Si-based tandem solar cells. Here, we study a high temperature MOVPE nucleation regime for growing GaP on v-groove Si. It is shown that MOVPE growth conditions can be used to control the facet selectivity of the GaP nucleation onto the v-grooves. The most promising nucleation condition was studied further, and it was demonstrated that it can be coalesced into a smooth thin film with promising material quality.

Back-Surface Passivation of CdTe Solar Cells Using Solution-Processed Oxidized Aluminum

Although back-surface passivation plays an important role in high-efficiency photovoltaics, it has not yet been definitively demonstrated for CdTe. Here, we present a solution-based process, which achieves passivation and improved electrical performance when very small amounts of oxidized Al 3+ species are deposited at the back surface of CdTe devices. The open circuit voltage (V oc ) is increased and the fill factor (FF) and photoconversion efficiency (PCE) are optimized when the total amount added corresponds to ~1 monolayer, suggesting that the passivation is surface specific. Addition of further Al 3+ species, present in a sparse alumina-like layer, causes the FF and PCE to drop as the interface layer becomes blocking to current flow. The optimized deposit increases the average baseline PCE for both Cu-free devices and devices where Cu is present as a dopant. The greatest improvement is found when the Al 3+ species are deposited prior to the CdCl 2 activation step and Cu is employed. In this case, the best-cell efficiency was improved from 12.6 to 14.4%. Furthermore, time-resolved photoluminescence measurements at the back surface and quantum efficiency measurements performed at the maximum power point indicate that the performance enhancement is due to a reduction in the interface recombination current at the back surface.

Se diffusion in CdTe thin films for photovoltaics

Manipulating CdSeTe bandgrading to enhance photocurrent and carrier lifetime is an essential part of high-performance CdTe photovoltaics (PVs). Here, we examine Se diffusion kinetics in single-crystal and polycrystalline CdTe during deposition, thermal annealing, and CdCl 2 treatments. Se distributions are determined by dynamic secondary-ion-mass spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy depth profiling and coupled with electron backscatter diffraction images of the crystalline structure. Effective bulk and grain boundary diffusion coefficients are determined by analytical models and discussed in the context of processing and film morphology. Se is found to diffuse in CdTe at much higher rates during CdCl 2 treatments than with thermal processing alone. GB diffusion also occurs at a significantly faster rate than bulk diffusion. As a result of these two effects, the near interface bulk and GB Se diffusion during CdCl 2 treatments dominates the bandgrading profiles in CdTe PVs.

Using hole injection layers for decreased metastability and higher performance in Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 devices

In this work, modifications to the buffer structure in Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 (CIGS) solar cells are examined in terms of power conversion efficiency and metastability. Varying amounts of thin hole-injecting layers are introduced at different locations in the CIGS/Zn(O,S) device structure. It is found that such layers simultaneously increase performance and decrease metastability. The most effective variant produces devices without metastability and with higher efficiency than the CdS-only controls. The most effective location for hole injection is found to be between the Zn(O,S) buffer and the transparent conductor. At this location, passivation of the CIGS surface is not a function of the hole injection layer, and thus a variety of materials with appropriate band-edge energies should achieve the same purpose.
