Planning Robot-Control Parameters With Qualitative Reasoning

Qualitative-reasoning planning algorithm helps to determine quantitative parameters controlling motion of robot. Algorithm regarded as performing search in multidimensional space of control parameters from starting point to goal region in which desired result of robotic manipulation achieved. Makes use of directed graph representing qualitative physical equations describing task, and interacts, at each sampling period, with history of quantitative control parameters and sensory data, to narrow search for reliable values of quantitative control parameters.

EOS distributed planning and scheduling prototype

Some of the more significant lessons learned during the development of the Earth Observing System (EOS) Distributed Planning and Scheduling Prototype are presented. The need for a central scheduler is not demonstrated. A mapping of scheduling and conflict-resolution responsibility across the nodes of the EOS distributed scheduling system is developed and shown to be both feasible and appropriate. Complex instrument scheduling is mostly accomplished at the ICC/IST (instrument control center/instrumental support terminal) with 'slidable' flexibility for slews and some kinds of calibrations resolved at the EOS Operations Center (EOC). All nodes have full visibility interinstrument contention for resource and environmental rights, e.g., vibration, thermal, and electromagnetic. The EOC assigns, by activity, initial action responsibility for conflict resolution to a node which is party to the conflict. Most interinstrument conflicts are resolved by the ICCs and ISTs during an intermediate scheduling phase while the EOC is negotiating a TDRS schedule with the NCC.

Planning And Reasoning For A Telerobot

Document discusses research and development of Telerobot Interactive Planning System (TIPS). Goal in development of TIPS is to enable it to accept instructions from operator, then command run-time controller to execute operations to execute instructions. Challenges in transferring technology from testbed to operational system discussed.

Autonomy through interaction - The JPL telerobot interactive planning system

The telerobot interactive planning system (TIPS) has been developed to provide automated task planning and reasoning for satellite servicing in NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory telerobot testbed. The strategy taken in this development is that an interface between a partially autonomous system and external sources of knowledge is a feature which enables application of technology not yet fully autonomous. Interactive features, both between the operator and TIPS and among the reasoning engines within TIPS, result in a system which has greater robustness than the reasoning engines alone could provide.
