A Polymer-Assisted Spinodal Decomposition Strategy toward Interconnected Porous Sodium Super Ionic Conductor-Structured Polyanion-Type Materials and Their Application as a High-Power Sodium-Ion Battery Cathode

A general polymer-assisted spinodal decomposition strategy is used to prepare hierarchically porous sodium super ionic conductor (NASICON)-structured polyanion-type materials (e.g., Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 , Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 , K 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 , Na 4 MnV(PO 4 ) 3 , and Na 2 TiV(PO 4 ) 3 ) in a tetrahydrofuran/ethanol/H 2 O synthesis system. Depending on the boiling point of solvents, the selective evaporation of the solvents induces both macrophase separation via spinodal decomposition and mesophase separation via self-assembly of inorganic precursors and amphiphilic block copolymers, leading to the formation of hierarchically porous structures. We find that the resulting hierarchically porous Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 possessing large specific surface area (≈77 m 2 g -1 ) and pore volume (≈0.272 cm 3 g -1 ) shows a high specific capacity of 117.6 mAh g -1 at 0.1 C achieving the theoretical value and a long cycling life with 77% capacity retention over 1000 cycles at 5 C. This method presented here can open a facile avenue to synthesize other hierarchically porous polyanion-type materials.

Tailoring Polymer Colloids Derived Porous Carbon Spheres Based on Specific Chemical Reactions

Porous carbon spheres derived from polymer colloids with regular geometry, monodispersed morphology, well-controlled contents and structures play important roles in many areas of application, such as energy storage/conversion, gas adsorption/separation, catalysis, and chemo-photothermal therapy. Suitable polymerization reaction and synthetic strategy are both critical for the obtainment of stable polymer colloids as carbon precursors. Basic polymerization reactions are the cornerstones of synthetic strategies, which directly provides the direct molecular-based design of functionalized polymer/ carbon spheres. Thus, this progress report mainly focuses on the summary of suitable polymerization reactions for colloidal polymer derived porous carbon spheres. Recent advances in the synthetic strategies and applications are also discussed, including their corresponding polymerization reactions. Finally, the perspectives for the development of polymer derived porous carbon spheres are provided based on the controlled synthesis of polymer colloids and optimization over the carbonization process to achieve highly functionalized carbon spheres for practical applications.

Holey Lamellar High-Entropy Oxide as an Ultra-High-Activity Heterogeneous Catalyst for Solvent-free Aerobic Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol

The development of noble-metal-free heterogeneous catalysts is promising for selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols; however, the relatively low conversion of non-noble metal catalysts under solvent-free atmospheric conditions hinders their industrial application. Now, a holey lamellar high entropy oxide (HEO) Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 Cu 0.2 Mg 0.2 Zn 0.2 O material with mesoporous structure is prepared by an anchoring and merging process. The HEO has ultra-high catalytic activity for the solvent-free aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol. Furthermore, up to 98% conversion can be achieved in only 2 h, to our knowledge, the highest conversion of benzyl alcohol by oxidation to date. By regulating the catalytic reaction parameters, benzoic acid or benzaldehyde can be selectively optimized as the main product. Analytical characterizations and calculations provide a deeper insight into the catalysis mechanism, revealing abundant oxygen vacancies and holey lamellar framework contribute to the ultra-high catalytic activity.

Solvent‐Free Self‐Assembly for Scalable Preparation of Highly Crystalline Mesoporous Metal Oxides

Abstract Mesoporous metal oxides (MMOs) have been demonstrated great potential in various applications. Up to now, the direct synthesis of MMOs is still limited to the solvent induced inorganic‐organic self‐assembly process. Here, we develop a facile, general, and high throughput solvent‐free self‐assembly strategy to synthesize a series of MMOs including single‐component MMOs and multi‐component MMOs (e.g., doped MMOs, composite MMOs, and polymetallic oxide) with high crystallinity and remarkable porous properties by grinding and heating raw materials. Compared with the traditional solution self‐assembly process, the avoidance of solvents in this method not only greatly increases the yield of target products and synthesis efficiency, but also reduces the environmental pollution and the consumption of cost and energy. We believe the presented approach will pave a new avenue for scalable production of advanced mesoporous materials for various applications.
