Spatial Seal Database for Prospective Storage Resources in the USA

The goal of the Spatial Seal Database for Prospective Storage Resources in the USA is to provide relevant information and spatial extents of caprock and seal rocks. A lack of aggregated information is readily available that focuses on the caprock and seal units within sedimentary basins. The EPA class VI permit requires an assessment of the confining zone as part of submitting a permit. The data catalog of seal unit names and relevant properties with the seal spatial extent database aims to help provided important data for carbon storage based assessments. The data catalog and database are designed to show what seal data is available in a sedimentary basin and guide stakeholders to the original data source for those datasets.

Community Sentiment Analysis with Focus on CCS

This research assesses community sentiment towards Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) as depicted in digital media, focusing on themes such as emissions, transport, and storage. Utilizing the VADER sentiment analysis model, the study analyzed titles and descriptions from online news articles to capture immediate impressions and sentiments. Results indicate a predominantly positive sentiment towards CCS, with significant regional variations. States like Alabama and Texas exhibit high positive sentiment, likely due to economic ties to the energy industry, while states like Delaware and Utah show negative sentiment, potentially driven by environmental concerns. The significance of this study lies in its potential to inform policy and communication strategies for CCS implementation. Understanding public sentiment is crucial for the success of CCS projects as it helps to identify and address community concerns. Media influence plays a significant role in shaping public opinion, and this study highlights the need for effective communication strategies to promote the benefits of CCS while addressing any misconceptions. By providing insights into regional differences in sentiment, this research supports the development of tailored interventions that can enhance public acceptance and support for CCS initiatives, ultimately contributing to the success of efforts to mitigate climate change through reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Evaluating the Nation's Pipeline Infrastructure with NETL's Advanced Infrastructure Integrity Model (AIIM)

This poster is a part of BIL-EDX4CCS Task 36: Advanced Infrastructure Integrity Modeling to Evaluate Existing Energy Infrastructure Reusability and Risk, the goal of which is to produce a smart tool that will assess existing energy infrastructure reusability and risk using the Advanced Infrastructure Integrity Model (AIIM). This model forecasts lifespan and potential risk using a multitude of factors such as incidents reports, structural characteristics, and the surrounding environment. The project aims to provide scientific insights for a better understanding of carbon storage (CS), potential to support CS stakeholder needs, national decarbonization, and mitigating climate change. AIIM will utilize an energy infrastructure database as its input, developed by acquiring publicly available data as well as NETL derived products. These resources include incidents, geohazards, and infrastructure variables. Soil data in the form of rasters and pipeline incident reports were processed and a script was developed to count the number of times features such as roads, railroads, and rivers intersected with pipeline segments which were then converted to points. Distance to oil and natural gas wells, petroleum ports, intermodal freight facilities, and geologic structures were also calculated. After data preparation and quality control was completed, the data was integrated into the pipeline points. Once models are complete, a smart tool will be created in the form of an online dashboard.

WELLBASE - An Interactive Platform for Wellbore Material Assessment

This project seeks to build an open-source wellbore material data repository with adequate material performance and contextual data to support Geological Carbon Storage (GCS). By appropriately evaluating the data types as mentioned earlier made available by the WELLBASE tool, stakeholders can make more informed decisions regarding well selections, risk assessment, and economic analysis for geologic carbon storage projects. Advanced Natural Language Processing models and other custom python scripts will be deployed in an automated process to extract unstructured data from documents, reports, and web applications and subsequently parse to more usable formats. The processed data will then be integrated into a robust and comprehensive database architecture, optimizing data accessibility, and usability for analytical purposes. The final data products will be accessible through a user-friendly visualization platform that will allow users to query and visualize the data, as well as download data in usable formats.

Carbon Storage Technical Viability Approach (CS TVA): An Integrated Approach for Feasibility and Data Resource Assessment

There is currently a poor understanding and lack of workflow to understand the technical viability of carbon storage spatially. To address this gap, the multi-faceted Carbon Storage Technical Viability Approach (CS TVA) is being developed to incorporate CO2 storage resources, environmental and socio-economic justice (EJ/SJ) factors to enable more comprehensive assessments. The CS TVA includes a (1) matrix framework, (2) an integrated and labeled database, (3) a data availability assessment workflow, and (4) spatial data availability assessment results. This approach leverages spatial and data science analytics to communicate data density, uncertainty, and gaps. The workflow can be applied in whole or in part, based on user needs.
