Offshore Geologic Carbon Storage (GCS) Data Collection Web Application

The Offshore Geologic Carbon Storage Data Collection Web Application is an interactive data collection which aggregates and disseminates publicly available data to support offshore geologic carbon storage (GCS) in the United States. This data collection can be leveraged by stakeholders to understand where GCS may be viable offshore, create GCS project analogs, and address challenges to GCS in offshore environments. Use of this tool is solely at the discretion of the user. See full Federal Disclaimer for further information (https://netl.doe.gov/home/disclaimer).

Advanced Offshore Hazard Forecasting to Enable Resilient Offshore Operations

Presentation for the Offshore Technology Conference 2024 manuscript, "Advanced Offshore Hazard Forecasting to Enable Resilient Offshore Operations." This presentation describes the use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) tools to assess offshore hazards and their impact to vulnerable infrastructure, in this case, pipelines. The results show the potential intersection of seafloor instability and pipelines with potentially lower integrity, then compares them to metocean pathways that could attract hazardous materials such as oil in the event that the pipelines are compromised.

Advanced Offshore Hazard Forecasting to Enable Resilient Offshore Operations

Paper prepared for the Offshore Technology Conference, 2024. Hazards in the offshore environment can imperil successful energy operations, whether those operations are conventional, renewable, or for decarbonization. The expanding accessibility of data science and the advanced applications of machine learning (ML) models creates an opportunity to assess potential hazards and the infrastructure they impact. We present a use case demonstrating the combined application of published ML tools to U.S. federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico, an actively explored region for offshore energy that is affected by variable metocean conditions and geologic processes contributing to potential hazards.

Offshore Advanced Infrastructure Integrity Model (AIIM) Dashboard

The Advanced Infrastructure Integrity Model (AIIM) is a multivariate, multi-machine learning modeling technology applied to evaluate the integrity of offshore energy infrastructure (e.g., pipelines, platforms) in the U.S Gulf Region. Offshore energy infrastructure plays an essential role in ensuring access to safe and secure energy for the United States. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), production in the U.S. Gulf Region accounts for 15% of total crude and 5% of total natural gas from the United States. Many of these structures have been operating for close to or past their design life, while others have the chance of attrition before return on investment. To better understand the potential for reuse or life extension opportunities, an assessment of the infrastructure integrity is critical to inform safe decision making. Assessing structural integrity, AIIM provides key insights that inform infrastructure use and reuse, as well as hazard prevention planning, in support of stakeholders including researchers and industry.

Carbon Storage Technical Viability Approach and National Data Assessment

Carbon Storage Technical Viability Approach is a comprehensive evaluation of potential geologic carbon storage sites that includes classic subsurface resource assessment components such as reservoir suitability in addition to hazard, environmental, social, regulatory, and jurisdiction components that may enhance or hinder successful carbon storage. Data for assessments of technically viable carbon storage span many categories, types; are disparate and numerous. Variables and types of data required to support CS assessments were previously not clearly defined and documented. Contextualizing available data indicates their utility, potential uncertainty, and gaps. This presentation details the Carbon Storage Technical Viability Approach, the associated matrix and database, and initial results from a portion of the national data availability assessment that contextualizes the data available to support carbon storage projects. Presented at the American Association of Petroleum Geologists' Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (SPE-AAPG-SEG CCUS 2024) conference in Houston, TX, March 11-13, 2024.

The CCS-EJ-SJ Database: A Tool for Addressing Justice Challenges in Carbon Capture and Storage

At CCUS 2024, within Theme 8: ESG and Stakeholder Engagement, the poster presentation on "The CCS-EJ-SJ Database: A Tool for Addressing Justice Challenges in Carbon Capture and Storage" highlights the innovative database designed to integrate environmental, social, energy, and economic justice into CCS projects. The CCS-EJ-SJ Database serves as a comprehensive resource for stakeholders, offering an interactive dashboard that provides access to essential data across various justice themes. It incorporates established initiatives like the Justice40 Initiative and tools such as the DOE's Disadvantaged Community Reporter, enhancing its utility and credibility. This presentation will highlight the CCS-EJ-SJ database's framework, the consequential research products, and its pivotal role in offering crucial insights into CCS opportunities, ultimately expediting sustainable, environmentally considerate, and socially responsible efforts.

Prospective Seal Name Catalog for U.S. Sedimentary Basins V1.0

The Prospective Seal Name Catalog for U.S. Sedimentary Basins V1.0 is an aggregation of prospective seal units for prospective storage resources within the USA for geologic carbon storage in both onshore and offshore basins. The catalog is intended to guide users to available literature and data resources. Prospective seal names are displayed with respect to the associated prospective storage resource target, for which the specified prospective seal may act as a confining layer for CO2 storage. A prospective seal unit’s lithology, position with respect to the reservoir (Primary, Secondary, Intraformational, etc.), and age (Geologic Period) are included when stated in the original literature or data resource. The information source for each record in the catalog includes the published citation, year of publication, resource type (Journal Article, Event Proceedings, etc.) and additional record notes.

The disCO2ver Platform: Curating Data and Tools for Geologic Carbon Sequestration and Deep Subsurface Research Systems

The U.S. DOE National Energy Technology Laboratory has invested 12+ years of development into the data repository and digital laboratory, the Energy Data eXchange (EDX, edx.netl.doe.gov). Supporting a variety of research areas across the DOE Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management, the platform has successfully curated and preserved thousands of data products from DOE research. The Carbon Storage Program has successfully supported data curation, upload, and publishing of data products on EDX for many years, demonstrating a success story of how resources like EDX can effectively help with long term preservation and publishing of DOE data products. EDX continues to shift towards cloud-supported infrastructure, taking a hybrid approach combining on-premises compute and storage integrated with cloud-hosted services. The integration of cloud compute and hybrid architecture enables the development of EDX-hosted platforms that tailor the data and tools hosted on them to a specific community, enables implementation of machine learning tools for data discovery and filtering, and enables the hosting of virtual (online user interface) tools. Geologic carbon sequestration (GCS) research continues to scale up in response to the current administration goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition the energy economy. Over the last year, EDX’s disCO2ver platform has been developed in response to the need for access to data products and tools to support the scaling up of GCS research. disCO2ver provides access to data resources and tools, produced by DOE and outside authoritative external resources. The platform also provides a user-access control component for the virtualization and cloud hosting of tools. Tools that need to be virtualized, to eliminate the need for users to download the tool and use local compute resources, is essential to supporting big-data analysis and machine learning that is becoming common place in carbon storage modeling, risk analysis, and data publishing practices. This talk will review the EDX’s disCO2ver platform and the current work ongoing to curate data and tools to support GCS and deep subsurface systems research.
