Lattice dynamics of 119 Sn impurity in a bcc-Cr crystal

The chromium crystal doped with 119 Sn isotope was studied using the nuclear resonance inelastic x-ray scattering and first principles calculations. The Sn partial phonon density of states (PDOS) was obtained for three temperatures that correspond to different magnetic states of Cr. At all temperatures, the energy spectrum consists of a broad band around 18 meV and a narrow peak at 43 meV. The additional peak around 39 meV is observed only in the magnetically ordered phases, indicating the influence of magnetic order in chromium on lattice dynamics. The partial PDOS calculated with the antiferromagnetic order on Cr atoms show a very good agreement with the experimental data. It is revealed that the high-energy peak is lying above the phonon spectra of the pure bcc-Cr crystal. These are the local modes with the increased energies due to a strongly reduced distance between Sn and the nearest-neighbor Cr atoms.

The Role of Optical Phonon Confinement in the Infrared Dielectric Response of III–V Superlattices

Polar dielectrics are key materials of interest for infrared (IR) nanophotonic applications due to their ability to host phonon-polaritons that allow for low-loss, subdiffractional control of light. The properties of phonon-polaritons are limited by the characteristics of optical phonons, which are nominally fixed for most “bulk” materials. Superlattices composed of alternating atomically thin materials offer control over crystal anisotropy through changes in composition, optical phonon confinement, and the emergence of new modes. In particular, the modified optical phonons in superlattices offer the potential for so-called crystalline hybrids whose IR properties cannot be described as a simple mixture of the bulk constituents. To date, however, studies have primarily focused on identifying the presence of new or modified optical phonon modes rather than assessing their impact on the IR response. Here, this study focuses on assessing the impact of confined optical phonon modes on the hybrid IR dielectric function in superlattices of GaSb and AlSb. Using a combination of first principles theory, Raman, FTIR, and spectroscopic ellipsometry, the hybrid dielectric function is found to track the confinement of optical phonons, leading to optical phonon spectral shifts of up to 20 cm -1 . These results provide an alternative pathway toward designer IR optical materials.

Evolution of the electronic structure in Ta 2 NiSe 5 across the structural transition revealed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We utilized high-energy-resolution resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at both the Ta and Ni L 3 -edges to map out element-specific particle-hole excitations in Ta 2 NiSe 5 across the phase transition. Our results reveal a momentum dependent gap-like feature in the low energy spectrum, which agrees well with the band gap in element-specific joint density of states calculations based on ab initio estimates of the electronic structure in both the low temperature monoclinic and the high temperature orthorhombic structure. Below T c , the RIXS energy-momentum map shows a minimal gap at the Brillouin zone center (~0.16 eV), conforming that Ta 2 NiSe 5 possesses a direct band gap in its low temperature ground state. However, inside the gap, no signature of anticipated collective modes with an energy scale comparable to the gap size can be identified. Upon increasing the temperature to above T c , whereas the gap at the zone center closes, the RIXS map at finite momenta still possesses the gross features of the low temperature map, suggesting a substantial mixing between the Ta and Ni orbits in the conduction and valence bands, which does not change substantially across the phase transition. Our experimental observations and comparison to the theoretical calculations lend further support that the phase transition and the corresponding gap opening in Ta 2 NiSe 5 is largely structural by nature with possible minor contribution from the putative exciton condensate.

IRIXS Spectrograph: an ultra high-resolution spectrometer for tender RIXS

The IRIXS Spectrograph represents a new design of an ultra-high-resolution resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectrometer that operates at the Ru L 3 -edge (2840 eV). First proposed in the field of hard X-rays by Shvyd'ko [(2015), Phys. Rev. A, 91, 053817], the X-ray spectrograph uses a combination of laterally graded multilayer mirrors and collimating/dispersing Ge(111) crystals optics in a novel spectral imaging approach to overcome the energy resolution limitation of a traditional Rowland-type spectrometer [Gretarsson et al. (2020), J. Synchrotron Rad. 27, 538–544]. In combination with a dispersionless nested four-bounce high-resolution monochromator design that utilizes Si(111) and Al 2 O 3 (110) crystals, an overall energy resolution better than 35 meV full width at half-maximum has been achieved at the Ru L 3 -edge, in excellent agreement with ray-tracing simulations.

J eff = $\frac{3}{2}$ metallic phase and unconventional superconductivity in GaTa 4 Se 8

By means of density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) calculations and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments, we investigate the high-pressure phases of the spin-orbit-coupled Jeff = 3/2 insulator GaTa 4 Se 8 . Its metallic phase, derived from the Mott state by applying pressure, is found to carry J eff = 3/2 moments. The characteristic excitation peak in the RIXS spectrum maintains its destructive quantum interference of J eff at the Ta L2-edge up to 10.4 GPa. Our exact diagonalization based DFT+DMFT calculations including spin-orbit coupling also reveal that the J eff = 3/2 character can be clearly identified under high pressure. These results establish the intriguing nature of the correlated metallic magnetic phase, which represents the first confirmed example of J eff =3/2 moments residing in a metal. They also indicate that the pressure-induced superconductivity is likely unconventional and influenced by these J eff = 3/2 moments. Based on a self-energy analysis, we furthermore propose the possibility of doping-induced superconductivity related to a spin-freezing crossover.

Anomalously Suppressed Thermal Conduction by Electron-Phonon Coupling in Charge-Density-Wave Tantalum Disulfide

Charge and thermal transport in a crystal is carried by free electrons and phonons (quantized lattice vibration), the two most fundamental quasiparticles. Above the Debye temperature of the crystal, phonon-mediated thermal conductivity ( κ L ) is typically limited by mutual scattering of phonons, which results in κ L decreasing with inverse temperature, whereas free electrons play a negligible role in κ L . Here, an unusual case in charge-density-wave tantalum disulfide (1T-TaS 2 ) is reported, in which κ L is limited instead by phonon scattering with free electrons, resulting in a temperature-independent κ L . In this system, the conventional phonon–phonon scattering is alleviated by its uniquely structured phonon dispersions, while unusually strong electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling arises from its Fermi surface strongly nested at wavevectors in which phonons exhibit Kohn anomalies. The unusual temperature dependence of thermal conduction is found as a consequence of these effects. The finding reveals new physics of thermal conduction, offers a unique platform to probe e-ph interactions, and provides potential ways to control heat flow in materials with free charge carriers. The temperature-independent thermal conductivity may also find thermal management application as a special thermal interface material between two systems when the heat conduction between them needs to be maintained at a constant level.

Anharmonic lattice dynamics and superionic transition in AgCrSe 2

Intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity ( κ l a t ) in superionic conductors is of great interest for energy conversion applications in thermoelectrics. Yet, the complex atomic dynamics leading to superionicity and ultralow thermal conductivity remain poorly understood. Here, we report a comprehensive study of the lattice dynamics and superionic diffusion in A g C r S e 2 from energy- and momentum-resolved neutron and X-ray scattering techniques, combined with first-principles calculations. Our results settle unresolved questions about the lattice dynamics and thermal conduction mechanism in A g C r S e 2 . We find that the heat-carrying long-wavelength transverse acoustic (TA) phonons coexist with the ultrafast diffusion of Ag ions in the superionic phase, while the short-wavelength nondispersive TA phonons break down. Strong scattering of phonon quasiparticles by anharmonicity and Ag disorder are the origin of intrinsically low κ l a t . The breakdown of short-wavelength TA phonons is directly related to the Ag diffusion, with the vibrational spectral weight associated to Ag oscillations evolving into stochastic decaying fluctuations. Furthermore, the origin of fast ionic diffusion is shown to arise from extended flat basins in the energy landscape and collective hopping behavior facilitated by strong repulsion between Ag ions. These results provide fundamental insights into the complex atomic dynamics of superionic conductors.
