Europium c -axis ferromagnetism in Eu ( Co 1 - x Ni x ) 2 - y As 2 : A single-crystal neutron diffraction study

Here we report neutron diffraction results for the body-centered-tetragonal series Eu⁢(Co 1-x ⁢Ni x ) 2-y As 2 , x=0.10, 0.20, 0.42, and 0.82, y≤0.10, that detail changes to the magnetic ordering with nominal hole doping. We report the antiferromagnetic (AFM) propagation vectors, magnetic transition temperatures, and the ordered magnetic moments. We find a nonmonotonic change of the AFM propagation vector with x, with a minimum occurring at the tetragonal to collapsed-tetragonal phase crossover. For x=0.10 and 0.82 we find c-axis helix ordering of the Eu magnetic moments (spins) similar to x=0 and 1, with the spins oriented within the ab-plane. For x=0.20 and 0.42 we find higher-temperature c-axis ferromagnetic (FM) order and lower-temperature c-axis cone order. Using the extinction conditions for the space group, we discovered that the Eu spins are ordered in the higher-temperature c-axis FM phase for intermediate values of x, contrary to a previous report suggesting only Co/Ni spin ordering. Although we cannot directly confirm that the Co/Ni spins are also ordered, we suggest that c-axis itinerant-FM ordering of the Co/Ni spins could provide a molecular field that drives FM ordering of the Eu spins, which in turn provides the anisotropy for the lower-temperature c-axis cone order.

Frustrated magnetic cycloidal structure and emergent Potts nematicity in CaMn 2 P 2

We report neutron-diffraction results on single-crystal CaMn 2 P 2 containing corrugated Mn honeycomb layers, and we determine its ground-state magnetic structure. The diffraction patterns consist of prominent (1/6,1/6, L ) reciprocal-lattice unit (r.l.u.; L = integer) magnetic Bragg reflections, whose temperature-dependent intensities are consistent with a first-order antiferromagnetic phase transition at the Néel temperature T N = 70 (1) K. Our analysis of the diffraction patterns reveals an in-plane 6 × 6 magnetic unit cell with ordered spins that in the principal-axis directions rotate by 60°steps between nearest neighbors on each sublattice that forms the honeycomb structure, consistent with the P A c magnetic space group. We find that a few other magnetic subgroup symmetries (P A 2 /c, P C 2/m, P S 1, P C 2, P C m, P S 1) of the paramagnetic $P\bar{3}m11'$ crystal symmetry are consistent with the observed diffraction pattern. We relate our findings to frustrated J 1 -J 2 -J 3 Heisenberg honeycomb antiferromagnets with single-ion anisotropy and the emergence of Potts nematicity.

Itinerant G-type antiferromagnet SrCr 2 As 2 studied by magnetization, heat capacity, electrical resistivity, and NMR measurements

Here, the physical properties of itinerant antiferromagnetic (AFM) SrCr 2 As 2 with body-centered tetragonal ThCr 2 Si 2 structure were investigated in single crystalline and polycrystalline forms by electrical resistivity ρ, heat capacity C p , magnetic susceptibility χ versus temperature T, and magnetization M versus applied magnetic field H isotherm measurements as well as 75 As and 53 Cr nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in the wide temperature range T = 1.6–900 K. From the χ(T) and 75 As NMR measurements, the G-type AFM state below T N = 615(15) K has been determined, consistent with the previous neutron-diffraction measurements. Direct evidence of magnetic ordering of the Cr spins was shown by the observation of the 53 Cr NMR spectrum under H = 0. From the χ( T) measurements on single-crystal SrCr 2 As 2 under the two different magnetic field directions H|| ab and H || c in the AFM state, the Cr ordered moments are shown to align along the c axis in the G-type AFM state. The metallic state is directly evidenced by the ρ, C p , and NMR measurements, and the density of states at the Fermi energy $\mathscr{D}$(E F ) in the AFM state is estimated to be 7.53 states/eV f.u. for both spin directions which is almost twice the bare $\mathscr{D}$(E F ) estimated from first-principles calculations, suggesting an enhancement of the conduction-carrier mass by a factor of two in the AFM state. The $\mathscr{D}$(E F ) is found to be nearly constant below at least 100 K and is independent of H. The ρ(T) is found to show T-linear behavior above T N and exhibits positive curvature below T N where significant loss of spin-disorder scattering upon magnetic ordering is observed. The resistivity anisotropy of the compound remains moderate ρ c /ρ a ~ 9 through most of the magnetically ordered phase but shows a rapid increase below 50 K.

Carrier tuning of Stoner ferromagnetism in ThCr 2 Si 2 -structure cobalt arsenides

CaCo 2–y As 2 is an unusual itinerant magnet with signatures of extreme magnetic frustration. The conditions for establishing magnetic order in such itinerant frustrated magnets, either by reducing frustration or increasing electronic correlations, is an open question. Here, we use results from inelastic neutron scattering and magnetic susceptibility measurements and density functional theory calculations to show that hole doping in Ca(Co 1–x Fe x ) 2–y As 2 suppresses magnetic order by quenching the magnetic moment while maintaining the same level of magnetic frustration. In this work, the suppression is due to tuning the Fermi energy away from a peak in the electronic density of states originating from a flat conduction band. This results in the complete elimination of the magnetic moment by $\textit{x}$ ≈ 0.25, providing a clear example of a Stoner-type transition.

Incommensurate and commensurate antiferromagnetic states in Ca Mn 2 As 2 and Sr Mn 2 As 2 revealed by As 75 NMR

Here, we carried out 75 As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on the trigonal CaMn 2 As 2 and SrMn 2 As 2 insulators exhibiting antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordered states below Néel temperatures T N = 62 and 120 K, respectively. In the paramagnetic state above T N , typical quadrupolar-split 75 As NMR spectra were observed for both systems. The 75 As quadrupolar frequency ν Q for CaMn 2 As 2 decreases with decreasing temperature, while ν Q for SrMn 2 As 2 increases, showing an opposite temperature dependence. In the AFM state, the relatively sharp and distinct 75 As NMR lines were observed in SrMn 2 As 2 and the NMR spectra were shifted to lower fields for both magnetic fields H ∥ c axis and H ∥ a b plane, suggesting that the internal fields B int at the As site produced by the Mn ordered moments are nearly perpendicular to the external magnetic field direction. No obvious distribution of B int was observed in SrMn 2 As 2 , which clearly indicates a commensurate AFM state. In sharp contrast to SrMn 2 As 2 , broad and complex NMR spectra were observed in CaMn 2 As 2 in the AFM state, which clearly shows a distribution of B int at the As site, indicating an incommensurate state. From the analysis of the characteristic shape of the observed spectra, the AFM state of CaMn 2 As 2 was determined to be a two-dimensional incommensurate state where Mn ordered moments are aligned in the ab plane. A possible origin for the different AFM states in the systems was discussed. Both CaMn 2 As 2 and SrMn 2 As 2 show very large anisotropy in the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T 1 in the paramagnetic state. 1/T 1 for H ∥ ab is much larger than that for H ∥ c, indicating strong anisotropic AFM spin fluctuations in both compounds.

First-order antiferromagnetic transitions of SrMn 2 P 2 and CaMn 2 P 2 single crystals containing corrugated-honeycomb Mn sublattices

Significance With rare exceptions, an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition in zero magnetic field is thermodynamically of second order where the thermal-average magnetic moments of the magnetic atoms (ordered moments) vary continuously on cooling through the AFM ordering temperature T N with no latent heat at the transition. Such materials include the AFM pnictides CaMn 2 As 2 , SrMn 2 As 2 , CaMn 2 Sb 2 , SrMn 2 Sb 2 , and CaMn 2 Bi 2 . Here we demonstrate that the closely related SrMn 2 P 2 and CaMn 2 P 2 insulators instead exhibit first-order AFM transitions at T N = 53 and 70 K, respectively, where the heat capacity exhibits a latent heat at T N . The mechanism causing these first-order transitions remains to be explained, but its understanding may lead to the development of novel magnetic materials of technological interest.

Short-range ferromagnetic order due to Ir substitutions in single-crystalline Ba(Co 1-x Ir x ) 2 As 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25)

The ternary-arsenide compound BaCo 2 As 2 was previously proposed to be in proximity to a quantum-critical point where long-range ferromagnetic (FM) order is suppressed by quantum fluctuations. In this paper we report the effect of Ir substitutions for Co on the magnetic and thermal properties of Ba(Co 1-x Ir x ) 2 As 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25) single crystals. These compositions all crystallize in an uncollapsed body-centered-tetragonal ThCr 2 Si 2 structure with space group I4/mmm. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal clear signatures of short-range FM ordering for x ≥ 0.11 below a nearly composition-independent characteristic temperature T cl ≈ 13 K. The small variation of T cl with x, thermomagnetic irreversibility between zero-field-cooled and field-cooled magnetic susceptibility versus T, the occurrence of hysteresis in magnetization versus field isotherms at low field and temperature, and very small spontaneous and remanent magnetizations <0.01 μ B /f.u. together indicate that the FM response arises from short-range FM ordering of FM spin clusters as previously inferred to occur in Ca(Co 1–x Ir x ) 2–y As 2 . Heat-capacity Cp(T) data do not exhibit any clear feature around Tcl, consistent with the very small moments of the FM clusters. The Cp(T) in the paramagnetic temperature regime 25–300 K is well described by the sum of a Sommerfeld electronic contribution and Debye and Einstein lattice contributions where the latter lattice contribution suggests the presence of low-frequency optic modes associated with the heavy Ba atoms in the crystals.

Electron–phonon coupling enhancement and displacive magnetostructural transition in SrCr 2 As 2 under magneto-Raman spectroscopy

Here, a Raman spectroscopy study on high quality single crystals of SrCr 2 A s 2 (SCA) in the temperature T range 4 K < T < 300 K and high applied magnetic fields up to H = 9 T is presented. The chromium B 1g phonon analysis reveals two anomalous shifts in the frequency, the first below T = 250 K at H = 0 T in the saturated AFM G -type order likely due to an enhanced electron–phonon coupling by the magnetic order, whereas the second anomaly occurs above H = 4 T at T = 4 K likely as a consequence of a magnetostructural displacive transition. Renormalization of the electronic Raman spectra in both studies reveals a decrease in the electronic density of states with decreasing T and increasing H , respectively, with consequent changes in the Fermi surface, which are intrinsically related to the observed anomalies.

Magnetic detwinning and biquadratic magnetic interaction in EuFe 2 As 2 revealed by 153 Eu NMR

In the nematic state of iron-based superconductors, twin formation often obscures the intrinsic, anisotropic, in-plane physical properties. Relatively high in-plane external magnetic fields H ext greater than the typical laboratory-scale magnetic fields 10–15 T are usually required to completely detwin a sample. However, recently a very small in-plane H ext ~ 0.1 T was found to be sufficient for detwinning the nematic domains in EuFe 2 As 2 . To explain this behavior, a microscopic theory based on biquadratic magnetic interactions between the Eu and Fe spins has been proposed. In this paper, using 153 Eu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements below the Eu 2+ ordering temperature, we show experimental evidence of the detwinning under small in-plane H ext . Our NMR study also reveals the evolution of the angles between the Eu and Fe spins during the detwinning process, which provides experimental evidence for the existence of biquadratic coupling in the system.

Magnetic phase transitions in Eu(Co 1-x Nix) 2-y As 2 single crystals

The effects of Ni doping in Eu(Co 1-x Ni x ) 2-y As 2 single crystals with x = 0 to 1 grown out of self flux are investigated via crystallographic, electronic transport, magnetic, and thermal measurements. All compositions adopt the body-centered-tetragonal ThCr 2 Si 2 structure with space group I 4= mmm . Here, we also find 3-4% of randomly-distributed vacancies on the Co/Ni site. Anisotropic magnetic susceptibility $\chi$α (α = ab; c) data versus temperature T show clear signatures of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) c-axis helix structure associated with the Eu +2 spins-7/2 for x = 0 and x = 1 as previously reported. The $\chi$α (T) data for x = 0.03 and 0.10 suggest an anomalous 2 q magnetic structure containing two helix axes along the c axis and in the ab plane, respectively, whereas for x = 0.75, 0.82, and 1 a c-axis helix is inferred as previously found for x = 1. At intermediate compositions x = 0:2, 0.32, 0.42, 0.54, and 0.65 a magnetic structure with a large ferromagnetic (FM) c-axis component is found from magnetization versus fi eld isotherms, suggested to be an incommensurate FM cone structure associated with the Eu spins, which consists of both AFM and FM components. In addition, the $\chi$ (T) and heat capacity C p (T) data for x = 0.2-0.65 indicate the occurrence of itinerant FM order associated with the Co/Ni atoms with Curie temperatures from 60 K to 25 K, respectively. Electrical resistivity ρ(T) measurements indicate metallic character for all compositions with abrupt increases in slope on cooling below the Eu AFM transition temperatures. In addition to this panoply of magnetic transitions, 151 Eu Mössbauer measurements indicate that ordering of the Eu moments proceeds via an incommensurate sine amplitude-modulated structure with additional transition temperatures associated with this effect.

Ferromagnetic cluster-glass phase in Ca(Co 1-x Ir x ) 2-y As 2 crystals

In this study, single crystals of Ca(Co 1-x Ir x ) 2-y As 2 with 0≤x≤0.35 and 0.10≤y≤0.14 have been grown using the self-flux technique and characterized by single-crystal x-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, magnetization M, and magnetic susceptibility χ measurements versus temperature T, magnetic field H, and time t, and heat-capacity C p (H,T) measurements. The XRD refinements reveal that all the Ir-substituted crystals crystallize in a collapsed-tetragonal structure as does the parent CaCo 2-y As 2 compound. A small 3.3% Ir substitution for Co in CaCo 1.86 As 2 drastically lowers the A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition temperature T N from 52 to 23 K with a significant enhancement of the Sommerfeld electronic heat-capacity coefficient. The A-type AFM structure consists of ab-plane layers of spins ferromagnetically aligned along the c axis with AFM alignment of the spins in adjacent layers along this axis. The positive Weiss temperatures obtained from Curie-Weiss fits to the χ(T>T N ) data indicate that the dominant magnetic interactions are ferromagnetic (FM) for all x. A magnetic phase boundary is inferred to be present between x=0.14 and x=0.17 from a discontinuity in the x dependencies of the effective moment and Weiss temperature in the Curie-Weiss fits. FM fluctuations that strongly increase with increasing x are also revealed from the χ(T) data. Furthermore, the magnetic ground state for x≥0.17 is a spin glass as indicated by hysteresis in χ(T) between field-cooled and zero-field-cooled measurements and from the relaxation of M in a small field that exhibits a stretched-exponential time dependence. The spin glass has a small FM component to the ordering and is hence inferred to be comprised of small FM clusters. The competing AFM and FM interactions along with crystallographic disorder associated with Ir substitution are inferred to be responsible for the development of a FM cluster-glass phase. A logarithmic T dependence of Cp at low T for x=0.14 is consistent with the presence of significant FM quantum fluctuations. This composition is near the T=0 boundary at x≈0.16 between the A-type AFM phase containing ferromagnetically-aligned layers of spins and the FM cluster-glass phase.

Helical magnetic ordering in Sr ( Co 1 - x Ni x ) 2 As 2

SrCo 2 As 2 is a peculiar itinerant magnetic system that does not order magnetically, but inelastic neutron-scattering experiments observe the same stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AF) fluctuations found in many of the Fe-based superconductors along with evidence of magnetic frustration. Here we present results from neutron diffraction measurements on single crystals of Sr(Co 1-x Ni x ) 2 As 2 that show the development of long-range AF order with Ni doping. However, the AF order is not stripe type. Rather, the magnetic structure consists of ferromagnetically aligned (FM) layers (with moments laying in the layer) that are AF arranged along c with an incommensurate propagation vector of (0 0 τ), i.e., a helix. Using high-energy x-ray diffraction, we find no evidence for a temperature-induced structural phase transition that would indicate a collinear AF order. This finding supports a picture of competing FM and AF interactions within the square transition-metal layers due to flat-band magnetic instabilities. However, the composition dependence of the propagation vector suggests that far more subtle Fermi surface and orbital effects control the interlayer magnetic correlations.

Non-Fermi-liquid types of behavior associated with a magnetic quantum critical point in Sr ( Co 1 - x Ni x ) 2 As 2 single crystals

The compound SrCo 2 As 2 with the body-centered tetragonal ThCr 2 Si 2 structure is known to remain paramagnetic down to a temperature T = 0.05 K, but inelastic neutron scattering studies have shown that both ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) fluctuations occur in single crystals. Thus it is of interest to study how the magnetism evolves on doping SrCo 2 As 2 . Previous work on polycrystalline samples of Sr (Co 1-x Ni x ) 2 As 2 indicated the development of AFM order for 0 < x ≲ 0.3. Here we studied single crystals of Sr(Co 1-x Ni x ) 2 As 2 for 0 < x ≤ 1 and confirmed the occurrence of AFM order which we deduce to have a c -axis helix structure. We also find evidence for an unusual composition-induced magnetic quantum critical point at x ≈ 0.3 where non-Fermi-liquid types of behavior were revealed by heat capacity and electrical resisitivity measurements at low T. Electron-doped Sr (Co 1-x Ni x ) 2 As 2 single crystals with compositions x = 0 to 0.9 were grown out of self-flux and SrNi 2 As 2 single crystals out of Bi flux. The crystals were characterized using single-crystal x-ray diffraction (XRD) at room temperature, and magnetic susceptibility χ (H, T), isothermal magnetization M (H, T), heat capacity Cp (H, T), and electrical resistivity ρ (H, T) measurements versus applied magnetic field H and T. The XRD studies show that the system undergoes a continuous structural crossover from the uncollapsed-tetragonal (ucT) structure to the collapsed tetragonal (cT) structure with increasing Ni doping. The χ(T) data show that SrCo 2 As 2 exhibits an AFM ground state almost immediately upon Ni doping on the Co site. Ab initio electronic-structure calculations for x = 0 and 0.15 indicate that a flat band with a peak in the density of states just above the Fermi energy is responsible for this initial magnetic-ordering behavior on Ni doping. The AFM ordering is observed in the range 0.013 ≤ x ≤ 0.25 with the ordered moments aligned in the ab plane and with a maximum ordering temperature T N = 26.5 K at x = 0.10. The Curie-Weiss-like T dependence of χ in the paramagnetic (PM) state indicates dominant FM interactions. The behavior of the anisotropic susceptibilities below T N suggests a planar helical magnetic ground state with a composition-dependent pitch based on a local-moment molecular-field-theory model, with FM interactions in the ab plane and weaker AFM interactions along the helix c axis. However, the small ordered (saturation) moments ~0.1 μ B per transition metal atom, where μ B is the Bohr magneton, and the values of the Rhodes-Wohlfarth ratio indicate that the magnetism is itinerant. The high-field M (H) isotherms and the low-field χ-1 ( T > T N ) data were successfully analyzed within the framework of Takahashi's theory of FM spin fluctuations. The C p (T) at low T exhibits Fermi-liquid behavior for 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.15 , whereas an evolution to a logarithmic non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior is found for x = 0.2 to 0.3. The logarithmic dependence is suppressed in an applied magnetic field. The low- T ρ ( H = 0 , T ) data show a T 2 dependence for 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.20 and a power-law dependence ρ (H = 0, T) = ρ 0 + AT n with n < 2 for x = 0.20 and 0.30. The exponent n shows a notable field dependence, suggesting both doping- and magnetic-field-tuned quantum critical phenomena. These low- T NFL types of behavior observed in the C p and ρ measurements are most evident near the quantum critical concentration x ≈ 0.3 at which a T = 0 composition-induced transition from the AFM phase to the PM phase occurs.

Helical antiferromagnetic ordering in EuNi 1.95 As 2 single crystals

The Eu + 2 spins-7/2 in EuNi 2 As 2 with the body-centered tetragonal ThCr 2 Si 2 structure order antiferromagnetically below the Néel temperature T N = 15 K into a helical antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with the helix axis aligned along the tetragonal c axis and the Eu ordered moments aligned ferromagnetically within the ab plane as previously reported from neutron diffraction measurements [T. Jin et al., Phys. Rev. B 99, 014425 (2019)]. Here we study the crystallographic, magnetic, thermal, and electronic transport properties of Bi-flux-grown single crystals using single-crystal x-ray diffraction, anisotropic magnetic susceptibility χ, isothermal magnetization M, heat capacity Cp, and electrical resistivity ρ measurements versus applied magnetic field H and temperature T. Vacancies are found on the Ni sites corresponding to the composition EuNi 1.95 (1) As 2. A good fit of the ρ (T) data by the Bloch-Grüneisen theory for metals was obtained. The χab (T) data below T N are fitted well by molecular field theory (MFT), and the helix turn angle kd and the Eu-Eu Heisenberg exchange constants are extracted from the fit parameters. The kd value is in good agreement with the neutron-diffraction result. The magnetic contribution to the zero-field heat capacity below T N is also fitted by MFT. The isothermal in-plane magnetization M ab exhibits two metamagnetic transitions versus H, whereas M c (T = 2 K ) is nearly linear up to H = 14 T, both behaviors being consistent with MFT. The M c (H, T) , ρ(H c , T) , and Cp (H c , T) data yielded a H c - T phase diagram separating the AFM and paramagnetic phases in good agreement with MFT. Anisotropic χ(T) literature data for the ThCr 2 Si 2 -type helical antiferromagnet EuRh 2 As 2 were also fitted well by MFT. A comparison is made between the crystallographic and magnetic properties of ThCr 2 Si 2 -type Eu M 2 Pn 2 compounds with M = Fe , Co, Ni, Cu, or Rh, and Pn = P or As, where only ferromagnetic and c -axis helical AFM structures are found.

Competing magnetic phases and itinerant magnetic frustration in SrCo 2 As 2

Whereas magnetic frustration is usually associated with local-moment magnets in special geometric arrangements, here we show that SrCo 2 As 2 is a candidate for frustrated itinerant magnetism. Using inelastic neutron scattering (INS), we determine that antiferromagnetic (AF) spin fluctuations develop in the square Co layers of SrCo 2 As 2 below T ≈ 100 K centered at the stripe-type AF propagation vector of ($\frac{1}{2}$, $\frac{1}{2}$), and that their development is concomitant with a suppression of the uniform magnetic susceptibility determined via magnetization measurements. We interpret this switch in spectral weight as signaling a temperature-induced crossover from an instability towards FM ordering to an instability towards stripe-type AF ordering on cooling, and show findings from Monte-Carlo simulations for a J 1 -J 2 Heisenberg model that illustrate how the crossover develops as a function of the frustration ratio –J 1 /(2J 2 ). By putting our INS data on an absolute scale, we quantitatively compare them and our magnetization data to exact-diagonalization calculations for the J 1 -J 2 model [N. Shannon et al., Eur. Phys. J. B 38, 599 (2004)], and show that the calculations predict a lower level of magnetic frustration than indicated by experiment. We trace this discrepancy to the large energy scale of the fluctuations (J avg ≳ 75 meV), which, in addition to the steep dispersion, is more characteristic of itinerant magnetism.

Antiferromagnetic stacking of ferromagnetic layers and doping-controlled phase competition in Ca 1 - x Sr x Co 2 - y As 2

In search of a quantum phase transition between the two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetism of Ca 1 - x Sr x Co 2 - y As 2 and stripe-type antiferromagnetism in SrCo2As 2 , we instead discover evidence for 1D magnetic frustration between magnetic square Co layers. We present neutron-diffraction data for Ca 1 - x Sr x Co 2 - y As 2 that reveal a sequence of $x$-dependent magnetic transitions which involve different stacking of 2D ferromagnetically aligned layers with different magnetic anisotropy. We report on the $x$-dependent changes to the magnetic order by utilizing classical analytical calculations of a 1D Heisenberg model where single-ion magnetic anisotropy and frustration of antiferromagnetic nearest- and next-nearest-layer exchange interactions are all composition dependent.
