Band parameters of N2O and CO2 determined by whole band analysis

Whole band analysis, a method of obtaining band parameters from spectra by nonlinear least squares fitting of calculated to observed spectra, has been applied to bands of N2O and CO2. The retrieved N2 broadened widths of the 02(0)00 - 00(0) and 12(0)0 - 00(0)0 bands of N2O suggest that the air broadened widths on the AFGL listing are about 10% high. The intensities and (C-12)(O-16)2 broadened widths of the 20002-00001 and 21102-01101 bands of (C-12)(O-16)(O-18) and the 20002-00001 band of (C-12)(O-16)(O-17) have also been determined.

The spectrum of N2O between 800 and 5200 cm(-1)

An atlas of N2O lines between 800 and 5200/cm obtained from low-pressure, long-path-length samples at 296K is presented. Many of the line centers were marked and their positions were tabulated. The peak absorptances of the weaker lines in the atlas are similar to those expected in an extreme path through the atmosphere.

Investigation of infrared spectra of atmospheric gases to support stratospheric spectroscopic investigations

Spectroscopic instrumentation and the absorption characteristics of atmospheric gases are discussed in relation to the requirements of spectroscopic stratospheric experiments. Improvement in the spectral resolution, accuracy of the line parameters, and the ranges of atmospheric conditions over which information is to be obtained are among the factors considered. Methods of simultaneously analyzing entire bands containing many lines were developed and applied to the analysis of bands of N20 and CO2. Progress in this analysis is reported.

Information measures in nonlinear experimental design

Some different approaches to the problem of designing experiments which estimate the parameters of nonlinear models are discussed. The assumption in these approaches that the information in a set of data can be represented by a scalar is criticized, and the nonscalar discrimination information is proposed as the proper measure to use. The two-step decay example in Box and Lucas (1959) is used to illustrate the main points of the discussion.

Band analysis by spectral curve fitting

A method of estimating the values of the parameters in the models describing the positions, widths, and intensities of the lines in rotation-vibration bands of gases, without the need for line by line analysis, is described. To illustrate the technique, portions of the 1-0 bands of HCl and CO have been analyzed. The values of up to 27 parameters, their standard deviations, and the correlations between the parameters required to describe the spectra have been obtained.

Investigation of infrared spectra of atmospheric gases to support stratospheric spectroscopic investigations

Four papers are presented which discuss the following: information measures in nonlinear experimental design; information in spectra of collision broadened absorption lines; band analysis by spectral curve fitting; and least squares analysis of Voight shaped lines. Abstracts of five research papers on which the author collaborated and which were delivered at the 34th Symposium of Molecular Spectroscopy (Ohio State University, June 1979) are included along with a subroutine for use with BMDP3R to retrieve the parameters of 10 Voight shaped lines.
