Optimum design of swept-forward high-aspect-ration graphite-epoxy wings

An analytical investigation of a swept-forward high-aspect-ratio graphite-epoxy transport wing is described. The objectives of this investigation are to illustrate an effective usage of the unique properties of composite materials by exploiting material tailoring and to demonstrate an integrated multidisciplinary approach for conducting this investigation.

An analysis of shear failure mechanisms for compression-loaded (+/-theta)s laminates

An analysis of interlaminar and in-plane shear failures for (+/-theta)s composite laminates loaded in uniaxial compression is described. A laminate model is presented that idealizes each ply as a plate supported by an elastic foundation. A nonlinear analysis for plies with short-wavelength initial imperfections is used to determine laminate stresses and interlaminar strains. A failure criterion that uses the results of the nonlinear analysis is introduced.

Failure of compression-loaded multi-directional composite laminates

An analytical and experimental investigation of the failure of selected compression-loaded composite laminates is described. A general nonlinear theory is presented for predicting a laminate's compressive strength and failure mode. The theory includes the effects of out-of-plane ply waviness, inplane fiber waviness, and fiber scissoring. A simple compressive test technique is used to obtain the experimental data. The analytical and experimental results show good agreement for theta less than 45 deg and show excellent agreement for theta not less than 45 deg. The dominant compression failure modes for the laminates in this study were found to be interlaminar shearing, inplane matrix shearing, and matrix compression.

Nonlinear analysis for the response and failure of compression-loaded angle-ply laminates with a hole

The objective was to determine the effect of nonlinear material behavior on the response and failure of unnotched and notched angle-ply laminates under uniaxial compressive loading. The endochronic theory was chosen as the constitutive theory to model the AS4/3502 graphite-epoxy material system. Three-dimensional finite element analysis incorporating the endochronic theory was used to determine the stresses and strains in the laminates. An incremental/iterative initial strain algorithm was used in the finite element program. To increase computational efficiency, a 180 deg rotational symmetry relationship was utilized and the finite element program was vectorized to run on a supercomputer. Laminate response was compared to experimentation revealing excellent agreement for both the unnotched and notched angle-ply laminates. Predicted stresses in the region of the hole were examined and are presented, comparing linear elastic analysis to the inelastic endochronic theory analysis. A failure analysis of the unnotched and notched laminates was performed using the quadratic tensor polynomial. Predicted fracture loads compared well with experimentation for the unnotched laminates, but were very conservative in comparison with experiments for the notched laminates.
