Charge density wave order, local lattice distortions, and topological electronic states in Nb Te 4

Assessing the atomic and electronic structure of strongly correlated systems in which the crystal symmetry changes due to emergent lattice distortions, such as charge density waves (CDWs), is nontrivial because the distortions are not necessarily amenable to a traditional crystallographic description. Using advance scattering and modeling techniques, we reveal the evolution of the atomic displacement modes behind the CDW phases of quasi-one-dimensional NbTe 4 and also derive the so far unknown atomic structure of its low-temperature commensurate (C) CDW phase. Electronic structure calculations based on the experimental C-CDW structure data predict the existence of Dirac fermions whose multiplicity turns out to depend on the degree of lattice distortions accounted for in the experimental structure derivation. Finally, we argue that the electronic structure of CDW systems in general, and in particular in transition metal tetra-tellurides, can be strongly impacted by local lattice distortions and, therefore, they should be fully accounted for when their rich physics is considered.

Thermal Hall effect in a van der Waals triangular magnet FeCL 2

Thermal transport is a pivotal probe for studying low-energy, charge-neutral quasiparticles in insulating magnets. In this Letter, we report an observation of large magnetothermal conductivity and thermal Hall effect (THE) in a van der Waals antiferromagnet FeCl 2 . The magnetothermal conductivity reaches over ~700%, indicating strong magnon-phonon coupling. Furthermore, we find an appreciable thermal Hall signal which changes sign concurrently with the spin-flip transition from the antiferromagnetic state to the polarized ferromagnetic state. Our theoretical calculations suggest that, in addition to the Berry curvature induced at the anticrossing points of the hybridized magnon and acoustic phonon modes of FeCl 2 , other mechanisms are needed to account for the magnitude of the observed THE.

A topological kagome magnet in high entropy form

AbstractTopological kagome magnets RMn 6 Sn 6 (R = rare earth element) attract numerous interests due to their non-trivial band topology and room-temperature magnetism. Here, we report a high entropy version of kagome magnet, (Gd 0.38 Tb 0.27 Dy 0.20 Ho 0.15 )Mn 6 Sn 6 . Such a high entropy material exhibits multiple spin reorientation transitions, which is not seen in all the related parent compounds and can be understood in terms of competing magnetic interactions enabled by high entropy. Furthermore, we also observed an intrinsic anomalous Hall effect, indicating that the high entropy phase preserves the non-trivial band topology. These results suggest that high entropy may provide a route to engineer the magnetic structure and expand the horizon of topological materials.

Anomalous Thermal Hall Effect in an Insulating van der Waals Magnet

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnets have been a fertile playground for the discovery and exploration of physical phenomena and new physics. In this Letter, we report the observation of an anomalous thermal Hall effect (THE) with κ xy ~ 1 × 10 -2 WK -1 m -1 in an insulating van der Waals ferromagnet VI 3 . The thermal Hall signal persists in the absence of an external magnetic field and flips sign upon the switching of the magnetization. In combination with theoretical calculations, we show that VI 3 exhibits a dual nature of the THE, i.e., dominated by topological magnons hosted by the ferromagnetic honeycomb lattice at higher temperatures and by phonons induced by the magnon-phonon coupling at lower temperatures. Our results not only position VI 3 as the first ferromagnetic system to investigate both anomalous magnon and phonon THEs, but also render it as a potential platform for spintronics-magnonics applications.
