AmeriFlux FLUXNET-1F US-NC2 NC_Loblolly Plantation

This is the AmeriFlux Management Project (AMP) created FLUXNET-1F version of the carbon flux data for the site US-NC2 NC_Loblolly Plantation. This is the FLUXNET version of the carbon flux data for the site US-NC2 NC_Loblolly Plantation produced by applying the standard ONEFlux (1F) software. Site Description - The North Carolina Loblolly Pine site is located in a pine plantation amongst the mixed forests of the North Carolina lower coastal plain. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries the region was logged extensively. After a series of clearcuts, the land was transformed for agricultural practices. In 1967 and 1969, 4000 ha was sold to the Weyerhauser company for agriculture, preservation, and commercial logging of loblolly pines in a series of plantations. The fifth rotation stand surrounding the tower was established in 1992. The only significant natural disturbances during the measurement period was a severe drought that spanned the entire duration of the 2007 growing season. Consequently, the 2007 total amount of precipitation was 486 mm below the 30-year norm. In the same year, the plantation was thinned and fertilized. The stand was thinned in Oct 2009. The eastern half of the site was fertilized in January 2011, and the entire site was fertilized in October 2012.

Earth's record-high greenness and its attributions in 2020

Terrestrial vegetation is a crucial component of Earth's biosphere, regulating global carbon and water cycles and contributing to human welfare. Despite an overall greening trend, terrestrial vegetation exhibits a significant inter-annual variability. The mechanisms driving this variability, particularly those related to climatic and anthropogenic factors, remain poorly understood, which hampers our ability to project the long-term sustainability of ecosystem services. Here, in this work, by leveraging diverse remote sensing measurements, we pinpointed 2020 as a historic landmark, registering as the greenest year in modern satellite records from 2001 to 2020. Using ensemble machine learning and Earth system models, we found this exceptional greening primarily stemmed from consistent growth in boreal and temperate vegetation, attributed to rising CO 2 levels, climate warming, and reforestation efforts, alongside a transient tropical green-up linked to the enhanced rainfall. Contrary to expectations, the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns had a limited impact on this global greening anomaly. Our findings highlight the resilience and dynamic nature of global vegetation in response to diverse climatic and anthropogenic influences, offering valuable insights for optimizing ecosystem management and informing climate mitigation strategies.

Water use of co‐occurring loblolly ( Pinus taeda ) and shortleaf ( Pinus echinata ) in a loblolly pine plantation in the Piedmont

Abstract Measuring water use in co‐occurring loblolly pine (Pinus taedaL.) and shortleaf pine (Pinus echinataMill.) enhances our understanding of their competitive water use and aids in refining watershed water budget model parameters. This study was conducted in a 12‐ha forested headwater catchment in the Piedmont of North Carolina, southeastern U.S., from 2018 to 2019 (pre‐thinning) to 2020 (post‐thinning). Sap flux density (J s ), species‐level transpiration (T s ), and watershed‐level transpiration (T w ) were quantified. Water use efficiency (WUE) in loblolly and shortleaf pines was compared, alongside an investigation into how both species'J s andT s responded to atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (VPD). Loblolly pine had 19%–36% higherJ s than shortleaf pine. DailyT s for loblolly pine ranged from 15.0 to 29.0 L/day whileT s in shortleaf pine ranged from 3.0 to 6.8 L/day. TheT s was significantly higher in loblolly pine when compared to shortleaf pine likely due to higher canopy position and higher growth rates of the former. WUE, defined by annual tree biomass growth per tree water use, was not significantly different between the two. DailyJ s andT s in both species responded nonlinearly to VPD, with loblolly pine being more sensitive and variable. Species‐specific water use should be considered when quantifyingT w and developing reliable models to predict the effects of forest management practices on water resources.

Understanding the Shift of Drivers of Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Based on Regional Process-Based Modeling in the Mississippi River Basin During the Past Century

Soil erosion and sedimentation problems remain a major water quality concern for making watershed management policies in the Mississippi River Basin (MRB). It is unclear whether the observed decreasing trend of stream suspended sediment loading to the mouth of the MRB over the last eight decades truly reflects a decline in upland soil erosion in this large basin. Here, for this work, we improved a distributed regional land surface model, the Dynamic Land Ecosystem Model, to evaluate how climate and land use changes have impacted soil erosion and sediment yield over the entire MRB during the past century. Model results indicate that total sediment yield significantly increased during 1980–2018, despite no significant increase in annual precipitation and runoff. The increased soil erosion and sediment yield are mainly driven by intensified extreme precipitation (EP). Spatially, we found notable intensified EP events in the cropland-dominated Midwest region, resulting in a substantial increase in soil erosion and sediment yield. Land use change played a critical role in determining sediment yield from the 1910s to the 1930s, thereafter, climate variability increasingly became the dominant driver of soil erosion, which peaked in the 2010s. This study highlights the increasing influences of extreme climate in affecting soil erosion and sedimentation, thus, water quality. Therefore, existing forest and cropland Best Management Practices should be revisited to confront the impacts of climate change on water quality in the MRB.

Beyond carbon flux partitioning: Carbon allocation and nonstructural carbon dynamics inferred from continuous fluxes

Carbon (C) allocation and nonstructural carbon (NSC) dynamics play essential roles in plant growth and survival under stress and disturbance. However, quantitative understanding of these processes remains limited. Here, in this work, we propose a framework where we connect commonly measured carbon cycle components (eddy covariance fluxes of canopy CO 2 exchange, soil CO 2 efflux, and allometry-based biomass and net primary production) by a simple mass balance model to derive ecosystem-level NSC dynamics (NSC i ), C translocation (dC i ), and the biomass production efficiency (BPE i ) in above- and belowground plant (i = agp and bgp) compartments. We applied this framework to two long-term monitored loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) plantations of different ages in North Carolina and characterized the variations of NSC and allocation in years under normal and drought conditions. The results indicated that the young stand did not have net NSC flux at the annual scale, whereas the mature stand stored a near-constant proportion of new assimilates as NSC every year under normal conditions, which was comparable in magnitude to new structural growth. Roots consumed NSC in drought and stored a significant amount of NSC post drought. The above- and belowground dC i and BPE i varied more from year to year in the young stand and approached a relatively stable pattern in the mature stand. The belowground BPE bgp differed the most between the young and mature stands and was most responsive to drought. With the internal C dynamics quantified, this framework may also improve biomass production estimation, which reveals the variations resulting from droughts. Overall, these quantified ecosystem-scale dynamics were consistent with existing evidence from tree-based manipulative experiments and measurements and demonstrated that combining the continuous fluxes as proposed here can provide additional information about plant internal C dynamics. Given that it is based on broadly available flux data, the proposed framework is promising to improve the allocation algorithms in ecosystem C cycle models and offers new insights into observed variability in soil–plant–climate interactions.

Unimolecular dissociation dynamics of electronically excited HCO(Ã 2 A"): rotational control of nonadiabatic decay

The photoinduced unimolecular decay of the electronically excited HCO(Ã 2 A") is investigated in a combined experimental–theoretical study. The molecule is excited to the (1, n 2 , 0) combination bands, which decay via Renner–Teller coupling to the ground electronic state. The rovibrational state distribution of the CO fragment was measured via the high-n Rydberg H-atom time-of-flight method and calculated using a wave packet method on an accurate set of potential energy surfaces. It is shown that the non-adiabatic decay rate is strongly modulated by the HCO rotational angular momentum, which leaves unique signatures in the product state distribution. Finally, the experimentally observed bimodal rotational distribution of the dominant CO(v = 0) fragment is likely due to decay of different vibronic states populated by the excitation and modulated by the excited state lifetime, which is in turn controlled by the parent rotational quantum number.

Detecting Coastal Wetland Degradation by Combining Remote Sensing and Hydrologic Modeling

Sea-level rise and climate change stresses pose increasing threats to coastal wetlands that are vital to wildlife habitats, carbon sequestration, water supply, and other ecosystem services with global significance. However, existing studies are limited in individual sites, and large-scale mapping of coastal wetland degradation patterns over a long period is rare. Our study developed a new framework to detect spatial and temporal patterns of coastal wetland degradation by analyzing fine-scale, long-term remotely sensed Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data. Then, this framework was tested to track the degradation of coastal wetlands at the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge (ARNWR) in North Carolina, United States, during the period from 1995 to 2019. We identified six types of coastal wetland degradation in the study area. Most of the detected degradation was located within 2 km from the shoreline and occurred in the past five years. Further, we used a state-of-the-art coastal hydrologic model, PIHM-Wetland, to investigate key hydrologic processes/variables that control the coastal wetland degradation. The temporal and spatial distributions of simulated coastal flooding and saltwater intrusion confirmed the location and timing of wetland degradation detected by remote sensing. The combined method also quantified the possible critical thresholds of water tables for wetland degradation. The remote sensing–hydrologic model integrated scheme proposed in this study provides a new tool for detecting and understanding coastal wetland degradation mechanisms. Our study approach can also be extended to other coastal wetland regions to understand how climate change and sea-level rise impact wetland transformations.

Rotational Modulation of à 2 A State Photodissociation of HCO via Renner-Teller Nonadiabatic Transitions

By examining the product-state distribution of a prototypical non- adiabatic predissociation system, HCO($Ã^2A''–\tilde X^2A'$), we demonstrate here that the dissociation dynamics is strongly modulated by parent rotational quantum numbers. The predissociation of the nominal ($ν_{\text{C–H}} = 0, ν_{\text{bend}}, ν_{\text{C–O}} = 1$) vibronic levels of the $AÃ^2A''$ state surprisingly gives rise to both vibrational ground and excited states of the CO product, despite the assumed spectator nature of the CO moiety. This anomaly is attributed to the dependence of the lifetime of the vibronic resonance facilitated by the Renner–Teller interaction on the parent rotational angular momentum quantum numbers coupled with transient intensity borrowing from nearby vibronic resonances with $ν_{\text{C–O}} = 0$. This unique phenomenon is a purely quantum mechanical behavior that has no classical analogue.

A Polymer-Assisted Spinodal Decomposition Strategy toward Interconnected Porous Sodium Super Ionic Conductor-Structured Polyanion-Type Materials and Their Application as a High-Power Sodium-Ion Battery Cathode

A general polymer-assisted spinodal decomposition strategy is used to prepare hierarchically porous sodium super ionic conductor (NASICON)-structured polyanion-type materials (e.g., Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 , Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 , K 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 , Na 4 MnV(PO 4 ) 3 , and Na 2 TiV(PO 4 ) 3 ) in a tetrahydrofuran/ethanol/H 2 O synthesis system. Depending on the boiling point of solvents, the selective evaporation of the solvents induces both macrophase separation via spinodal decomposition and mesophase separation via self-assembly of inorganic precursors and amphiphilic block copolymers, leading to the formation of hierarchically porous structures. We find that the resulting hierarchically porous Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 possessing large specific surface area (≈77 m 2 g -1 ) and pore volume (≈0.272 cm 3 g -1 ) shows a high specific capacity of 117.6 mAh g -1 at 0.1 C achieving the theoretical value and a long cycling life with 77% capacity retention over 1000 cycles at 5 C. This method presented here can open a facile avenue to synthesize other hierarchically porous polyanion-type materials.

Solvent‐Free Self‐Assembly for Scalable Preparation of Highly Crystalline Mesoporous Metal Oxides

Abstract Mesoporous metal oxides (MMOs) have been demonstrated great potential in various applications. Up to now, the direct synthesis of MMOs is still limited to the solvent induced inorganic‐organic self‐assembly process. Here, we develop a facile, general, and high throughput solvent‐free self‐assembly strategy to synthesize a series of MMOs including single‐component MMOs and multi‐component MMOs (e.g., doped MMOs, composite MMOs, and polymetallic oxide) with high crystallinity and remarkable porous properties by grinding and heating raw materials. Compared with the traditional solution self‐assembly process, the avoidance of solvents in this method not only greatly increases the yield of target products and synthesis efficiency, but also reduces the environmental pollution and the consumption of cost and energy. We believe the presented approach will pave a new avenue for scalable production of advanced mesoporous materials for various applications.
