Measurements of nematic susceptibility with phase sensitive nuclear magnetic resonance in pulsed strain fields

Here, we present nuclear magnetic resonance data in BaFe 2 As 2 in the presence of pulsed strain fields that are interleaved in time with the radio frequency excitation pulses. In this approach, the preceding nuclear magnetization acquires a phase shift that is proportional to the strain and pulse time. The sensitivity of this approach is limited by the homogeneous decoherence time, T 2 , rather than the inhomogeneous linewidth. We measure the nematic susceptibility as a function of temperature and demonstrate a three orders of magnitude improvement in sensitivity. This approach will enable studies of the strain response in a broad range of materials that previously were inaccessible due to inhomogeneous broadening.

Slope of the upper critical field at T c in two-band superconductors with nonmagnetic disorder: s + + superconductivity in Ba 1 − x K x Fe 2 As 2

A recent theory of the disorder-dependent slope of the upper critical field at the superconducting transition temperature T c , defined as S ≡ |dH c2 /dT| T→T c , is extended to multiband superconductors aimed at iron-based superconductors, considering two constant gaps of different magnitudes and, potentially, different signs. Here, we show that the slope S decreases with increasing nonmagnetic scattering rate P in the s ± pairing state and increases in the s ++ superconductor for a reasonable range of parameters. The experiment shows that in a typical iron-based superconductor, Ba 1–x K x Fe 2 As 2 (BaK122), the nonmagnetic disorder induced by electron irradiation leads to an increasing S(P) across the superconducting “dome,” at different x. This implies that Ba 1–x K x Fe 2 As 2 is likely an s ++ superconductor with two effective gaps of different magnitudes, at least at moderate doping levels, x< 0.6. This work reopens a decade-long discussion about the nature of the superconducting order parameter in iron pnictides.

Anisotropic magnetism and electronic structure of trigonal EuAl 2 Ge 2 single crystals

Understanding the interplay between magnetic and electronic degrees of freedom is of profound recent interest in different Eu-based magnetic topological materials. Here, we studied the magnetic and electronic properties of the layered Zintl-phase compound EuAl 2 Ge 2 crystallizing in the trigonal CaAl 2 Si 2 -type structure. We report zero-field neutron diffraction, temperature T - and magnetic-field H-dependent magnetic susceptibility χ(T, H), isothermal magnetization M(T, H), heat capacity C p (T, H), and electrical resistivity ρ(T, H) measurements, together with T-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements complemented with first-principle calculations. EuAl 2 Ge 2 undergoes second-order A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering below T N = 27.5(5) K, with the Eu moments (Eu 2+ , S = 7/2) aligned ferromagnetically in the ab plane while these layers are stacked antiferromagnetically along the c axis. The critical fields at which all moments become parallel to the field are 37.5(5) and 52.5(5) kOe for H ∥ ab and H ∥ c, respectively. The H = 0 magnetic structure consists of trigonal AFM domains associated with ab-plane magnetic anisotropy and a field-induced reorientation of the Eu spins in the domains is also evident at T = 2 K below the critical field H c1 = 2.5(1) kOe. The ρ(T) measurements reveal metallic behavior transforming into a slight resistivity increase on cooling towards T N . A pronounced loss of spin-disorder scattering is observed below T N . The ARPES results show that EuAl 2 Ge 2 is metallic both above and below T N , and the Fermi surface is anisotropic with two hole pockets at the zone center and one small electron pocket at each M point. In the AFM phase, we directly observe folded bands in ARPES due to the doubling of the magnetic unit cell along the c axis with an enhancement of quasiparticle weight due to the complex change in the coupling between the magnetic moments and itinerant electrons on cooling below T N . The observed electronic structure is well reproduced by first-principle calculations, which also predict the presence of nontrivial electronic states near the Fermi level in the AFM phase with Z 2 topological numbers 1;(000)

Superconductivity and magnetic and transport properties of single-crystalline CaK ( Fe 1 – x Cr x ) 4 As 4

Members of the CaK (Fe 1–x Cr x ) 4 As 4 series have been synthesized by high-temperature solution growth in single-crystalline form and characterized by x-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, and magnetic and transport measurements. The effects of Cr substitution on the superconducting and magnetic ground states of CaKFe 4 As 4 (T c = 35 K) have been studied. These measurements show that the superconducting transition temperature decreases monotonically and is finally suppressed below 1.8 K as x is increased from 0 to 0.038. For x-values greater than 0.012, signatures of a magnetic transition can be detected in magnetic measurements with the associated features in the transport measurements becoming detectable for x ≥ 0.038. The magnetic transition temperature increases in a roughly linear manner as Cr substitution increases. A temperature-composition (T – x) phase diagram is constructed, revealing a half-dome of superconductivity with the magnetic transition temperature, T*, appearing near 22 K for x ~ 0.017 and rising slowly up to 60 K for x ~ 0.077. The T – x phase diagrams for CaK (Fe 1–x T x ) 4 As 4 for T = Cr and Mn are essentially the same despite the nominally different band filling; this is in marked contrast to T = Co and Ni series for which the T – x diagrams scale by a factor of 2, consistent with the different changes in band filling Co and Ni would produce when replacing Fe. Superconductivity of CaK (Fe 1–x Cr x ) 4 As 4 is also studied as a function of magnetic field. A clear change in $H^{'}_{c2}$ (T)/T c , where $H^{'}_{c2}$ (T) is dH c2 (T)/dT, at x ~ 0.012 is observed and probably is related to a change of the Fermi surface due to magnetic order. Further, coherence length and the London penetration depths are also calculated based on H c1 and H c2 data. Both of them as a function of x show changes near x = 0.012, again consistent with Fermi surface changes associated with the magnetic ordering seen for higher x-values.

Possible unconventional order parameter in single crystals of SrPt 3 P superconductor

Here, anisotropic properties of single crystals of SrPt 3 P were studied using London penetration depth and electrical resistivity measurements. The upper critical field, $H_{c2}(T)$, was determined from four-probe electrical resistivity measurements for three orthogonal directions of a magnetic field with respect to the crystal. The London penetration depth, $λ(T)$, was determined from the magnetic susceptibility of the Meissner–London state measured using a tunnel-diode resonator technique. Whereas $H_{c2}(T)$ and the normal-state $ρ(T)$ are practically identical for all three magnetic field orientations, the London penetration depth shows significant unidirectional anisotropy. The low-temperature $λ(T)$ is exponentially attenuated when a small excitation radiofrequency magnetic field, $H_{rf}$, is applied along the c"-direction, in which case screening currents flow in the a"b"-plane, while for the other two orientations, $H_{rf}$∥ a" and $H_{rf}$ ∥ b", the London penetration depth shows a much stronger, $λ(T)$ ~ T 2 , variation. Such unusual and contrasting behavior of the two anisotropies, $γ_{H}$(T) = $H_{c2}$/$H_{c2,c}$ = $ξ_{ab}$/$ξ_{c}$ and $γ_{λ}$(T) = $λ_{c}$\$λ_{ab'}$, imposes significant constraints on the possible order parameter. Although our measurements are insufficient to derive conclusively the superconducting gap anisotropy, the order parameter with two point nodes and a modulation in the perpendicular direction is qualitatively consistent with the experimental observations.

A-type antiferromagnetic order in semiconducting EuMg 2 Sb 2 single crystals

Eu-based Zintl-phase materials EuA 2 Pn 2 (A = Mg, In, Cd, Zn; Pn = Bi, Sb, As, P) have generated significant recent interest owing to the complex interplay of magnetism and band topology. Here, we investigated the crystallographic, magnetic, and electronic properties of the layered Zintlphase single crystals of EuMg 2 Sb 2 with the trigonal CaAl 2 Si 2 crystal structure (space group $P\bar{3}m1$). Electrical resistivity measurements complemented with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations find an activated behavior with intrinsic conductivity at high temperatures indicating a semiconducting electronic ground state with a narrow energy gap of 370 meV. Magnetic susceptibility and zero-field heat capacity measurements indicate that the compound undergoes antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering at the Néel temperature T N = 8.0(2) K. Here, zero-field neutron-diffraction measurements reveal that the AFM ordering is A-type where the Eu spins (Eu 2+ , S = 7/2) arranged in ab-plane layers are aligned ferromagnetically in the ab plane and the Eu spins in adjacent layers are aligned antiferromagnetically. Eu-moment reorientation within the ab planes in the trigonal AFM domains associated with a very weak inplane magnetic anisotropy is also evident below T N at low fields < 0.05 T. Although isostructural semimetallic EuMg 2 Bi 2 is reported to host Dirac surface states, the observation of narrow-gap semiconducting behavior in EuMg 2 Sb 2 implies a strong role of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in tuning the electronic states of these materials. Our DFT studies also suggest, besides the SOC, the more electronegative and smaller Sb than Bi shifts the low-lying conduction bands along the Γ-A direction to higher energy, resulting in an indirect bulk band gap between the Γ and M points for EuMg 2 Sb 2 .

Itinerant G-type antiferromagnet SrCr 2 As 2 studied by magnetization, heat capacity, electrical resistivity, and NMR measurements

Here, the physical properties of itinerant antiferromagnetic (AFM) SrCr 2 As 2 with body-centered tetragonal ThCr 2 Si 2 structure were investigated in single crystalline and polycrystalline forms by electrical resistivity ρ, heat capacity C p , magnetic susceptibility χ versus temperature T, and magnetization M versus applied magnetic field H isotherm measurements as well as 75 As and 53 Cr nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in the wide temperature range T = 1.6–900 K. From the χ(T) and 75 As NMR measurements, the G-type AFM state below T N = 615(15) K has been determined, consistent with the previous neutron-diffraction measurements. Direct evidence of magnetic ordering of the Cr spins was shown by the observation of the 53 Cr NMR spectrum under H = 0. From the χ( T) measurements on single-crystal SrCr 2 As 2 under the two different magnetic field directions H|| ab and H || c in the AFM state, the Cr ordered moments are shown to align along the c axis in the G-type AFM state. The metallic state is directly evidenced by the ρ, C p , and NMR measurements, and the density of states at the Fermi energy $\mathscr{D}$(E F ) in the AFM state is estimated to be 7.53 states/eV f.u. for both spin directions which is almost twice the bare $\mathscr{D}$(E F ) estimated from first-principles calculations, suggesting an enhancement of the conduction-carrier mass by a factor of two in the AFM state. The $\mathscr{D}$(E F ) is found to be nearly constant below at least 100 K and is independent of H. The ρ(T) is found to show T-linear behavior above T N and exhibits positive curvature below T N where significant loss of spin-disorder scattering upon magnetic ordering is observed. The resistivity anisotropy of the compound remains moderate ρ c /ρ a ~ 9 through most of the magnetically ordered phase but shows a rapid increase below 50 K.

Intermediate scattering potential strength in electron-irradiated YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ from London penetration depth measurements

Temperature-dependent London penetration depth, λ(T), of a high quality optimally-doped YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ single crystal was measured using tunnel-diode-resonator technique. Controlled artificial disorder was induced by low-temperature 20 K irradiation by 2.5 MeV electrons at two large doses of 3.8 x 10 19 and 5.3 x 10 19 electrons per cm 2 . The irradiation caused significant suppression of the superconductor's critical temperature, T c , from 94.6 K to 90.0 K, and to 78.7 K, respectively. The low-temperature behavior of λ(T) evolves from a T-linear in pristine state to a T 2 behavior after irradiation, expected for a line-nodal d-wave superconductor. However, the original theory that explained such behavior assumed a unitary limit of the scattering potential, whereas usually in normal metals and semiconductors, Born scattering is sufficient to describe the experiment. To estimate the scattering potential strength, we calculated the superfluid density, ρ s (t = T/T c ) = λ 2 (0)/λ 2 (T), varying the amount and strength of non-magnetic scattering using a self-consistent t-matrix theory. Fitting the obtained curves to a power law, ρ s = 1 - Rt n , and to a polynomial, ρ s = 1 - At - Bt 2 , and comparing the coefficients n in one set and A and B in another with the experimental values, we estimate the phase shift to be around 70 and 65°, respectively. We correlate this result with the evolution of the density of states with nonmagnetic disorder.

Multiband superconductivity in V 3 Si determined from studying the response to controlled disorder

The London penetration depth, λ(T), was measured in a single crystal V 3 Si. The superfluid density obtained from this measurement shows a distinct signature of two almost decoupled superconducting gaps. This alone is insufficient to distinguish between s ± and s ++ pairing states, but it can be achieved by studying the effect of a controlled non-magnetic disorder on the superconducting transition temperature, T c . For this purpose, the same V 3 Si crystal was sequentially irradiated by 2.5 MeV electrons three times, repeating the measurement between the irradiation runs. A total dose of 10 C/cm 2 (6.24 × 10 19 electrons/cm 2 ) was accumulated, for which T c has changed from 16.4 K in a pristine state to 14.7 K (9.3 %). This substantial suppression is impossible for a single isotropic gap, but also it is not large enough for a sign-changing s± pairing state. Our electronic band-structure calculations show how five bands crossing the Fermi energy can be naturally grouped to support two effective gaps, not dissimilar from the iron pnictides physics. We analyze the results using two-gap models for both, λ(T) and T c , which describe the data very well. Finally, the experimental results and theoretical analysis provide strong support for an s ++ superconductivity with two unequal gaps, Δ 1 (0) ≈ 2.53 meV and Δ 2 (0) ≈ 1.42 meV, and a very weak inter-band coupling in V 3 Si superconductor.

$A$-type antiferromagnetic order and magnetic phase diagram of the trigonal Eu spin-$\frac{7}{2}$ triangular-lattice compound $\mathrm{EuSn_2As_2}$

The trigonal compound EuSn 2 As 2 was recently discovered to host Dirac surface states within the bulk band gap and orders antiferromagnetically below the N´eel temperature T N = 23.5(2) K from neutron-diffraction measurements. Here the magnetic ground state of single-crystal EuSn 2 As 2 and the evolution of its properties versus temperature T and applied magnetic field H are reported. Included are the zero-field single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements versus T, magnetization M(H, T), magnetic susceptibility χ(H, T) = M(H,T)/H, heat capacity C p (H, T), and electrical resistivity ρ(H, T) measurements. The neutron-diffraction and χ(T) measurements both indicate a collinear A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure below T N , where the Eu 2+ spins S = 7/2 in a triangular ab-plane layer (hexagonal unit cell) are aligned ferromagnetically in the ab plane whereas the spins in adjacent Eu planes along the c axis are aligned antiferromagnetically. The χ(H ab , T) and χ(Hc, T) data together indicate a smooth crossover between the collinear AFM alignment and an unknown magnetic structure at H ≈ 0.12 T. Dynamic spin fluctuations up to 60 K are evident in the χ(T), Cp(T) and ρ(H, T) measurements, a temperature that is more than twice T N . The ρ(H, T) is consistent with a low-carrier-density metal with strong magnetic scattering and does not reflect a contribution of the topological state of the material as reported earlier by ARPES measurements. This observation is consistent with previous ones for other topological insulators where the chemical potential is above the Dirac point so that ARPES readily detects the surface states, whereas resistivity measurements do not. Finally, the magnetic phase diagrams for both H ∥ c and H ∥ ab in the H-T plane are constructed from the T N (H), χ(H, T), Cp(H, T), and ρ(H, T) data.

Low-temperature high-frequency dynamic magnetic susceptibility of classical spin-ice Dy 2 Ti 2 O 7

In this study, radio-frequency (14.6 MHz) AC magnetic susceptibility, , of Dy 2 Ti 2 O 7 was measured using self-oscillating tunnel-diode resonator. Measurements were made with the excitation AC field parallel to the superimposed DC magnetic field up to 5 T in a wide temperature range from 50 mK to 100 K. At 14.6 MHz, a known broad peak of from kHz—range audio-frequency measurements around 15 K for both [111] and [110] directions shifts to 45 K, continuing the Arrhenius activated behavior with the same activation energy barrier of E a ≈ 230 K. Magnetic field dependence of along [111] reproduces previously reported low-temperature two-in-two-out to three-in-one-out spin configuration transition at about 1 T, and an intermediate phase between 1 and 1.5 T. The boundaries of the intermediate phase show reasonable overlap with the literature data and connect at a critical endpoint of the first order transition line, suggesting that these features are frequency independent. An unusual upturn of the magnetic susceptibility at T → 0 was observed in magnetic fields between 1.5 T and 2 T for both magnetic field directions, before fully polarized configuration sets in above 2 T.

Effect of controlled pointlike disorder induced by 2.5-MeV electron irradiation on the nematic resistivity anisotropy of hole-doped (Ba,K)Fe 2 As 2

In-plane anisotropy of electrical resistivity was studied in samples of the hole-doped Ba 1–x K x Fe 2 As 2 in the composition range 0.21 ≤ x ≤ 0.26 where anisotropy changes sign. Low-temperature (~20 K) irradiation with relativistic 2.5 MeV electrons was used to control the level of disorder and residual resistivity of the samples. Modification of the stress-detwinning technique enabled measurements of the same samples before and after irradiation, leading to the conclusion of anisotropic character of predominantly inelastic scattering processes. Our main finding is that the resistivity anisotropy is of the same sign irrespective of residual resistivity, and remains the same in the orthorhombic C 2 phase above the reentrant tetragonal transition. Unusual T-linear dependence of the anisotropy Δρ ≡ ρ a (T) – ρ b (T) is found in pristine samples with x = 0.213 and x = 0.219 , without similar signatures in either ρ a (T) or ρ b (T). In this paper, we show that this feature can be reproduced by a phenomenological model of R. M. Fernandes et al. We speculate that onset of fluctuations of nematic order on approaching the instability towards the reentrant tetragonal phase contributes to this unusual dependence.

Mechanical detwinning device for anisotropic resistivity measurements in samples requiring dismounting for particle irradiation

Uniaxial stress is used to detwin samples of orthorhombic iron based superconductors to study their intrinsic electronic anisotropy. Here we describe the development of a new detwinning setup enabling variable-load stress-detwinning with easy sample mounting/dismounting without the need to re-solder the contacts. It enables the systematic study of the anisotropy evolution as a function of an external parameter when the sample is modified between the measurements. In our case, the external parameter is the dose of 2.5 MeV electron irradiation at low temperature. We illustrate the approach by studying resistivity anisotropy in single crystals of Ba 1-x K x Fe 2 As 2 at x =0.25 where the much discussed unusual re-entrance of tetragonal C 4 phase, C 4 → C 2 → C 4 , is observed on cooling. With the described technique we found a significant anisotropy increase in C 2 phase after electron irradiation with dose of 2.35 C/cm 2 .

Tuning the Intrinsic Anisotropy with Disorder in the Ca K Fe 4 As 4 Superconductor

In this paper, we report on the anisotropy of the London penetration depth of CaKFe 4 As 4 , discussing how it relates to its electronic structure and how it modifies under introduction of disorder, both chemically induced (by Ni substitution) and irradiation induced (by 3.5-MeV protons). Indeed, CaKFe 4 As 4 is particularly suitable for the study of fundamental superconducting properties due to its stoichiometric composition, exhibiting clean-limit behavior in the pristine samples and having a fairly high critical temperature, T c ≈35 K. The London penetration depth λ L is measured with a microwave-coplanar-resonator technique that allows us to deconvolve the anisotropic contributions λ L,ab and λ L,c and obtain the anisotropy parameter γλ=λ L,c /λ L,ab . The γλ(T) found for the undoped pristine sample is in good agreement with previous literature and is here compared to ab initio density-functional-theory and Eliashberg calculations. The dependence of γλ(T) on both chemical and irradiation-induced disorder is discussed to highlight which method is more suitable to decrease the direction dependence of the electromagnetic properties while maintaining a high critical temperature. Lastly, the relevance of an intrinsic anisotropy such as γλ on application-related anisotropic parameters (critical current, pinning) is discussed in light of the recent employment of CaKFe 4 As 4 in the production of wires.

Universal temperature dependence of the London penetration depth in κ - ( ET ) 2 X superconductors

High-precision radio-frequency magnetic susceptibility measurements were performed on single crystals of fully deuterated $κ-(ET)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]\,Br$, hereafter designated as $κ-(ET)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]\,Br$. This material phase separates into superconducting and antiferromagnetic regions, the degree of which depends strongly upon the cooling rate. Here, we show that the screening fraction $η_{sc}$ varies logarithmically with the cooling rate over nearly five decades. The average size of superconducting regions is estimated to vary from 5 to $40μm$, depending upon cooling rate, consistent with previous infrared microscopy measurements. In the region $T≲T_c/3$, the effective magnetic penetration depth exhibits power-law behavior $λ(T)-λ(0)~T^n$ with $n=1.6$, independent of the cooling rate. Changes in cooling rate and the consequent phase separation evidently do not introduce the kind of disorder that would alter the exponent $n$ in a $d$-wave superconductor. The exponent remains close to $n=$ 1.5, reported in single crystals of $κ-(ET)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]\,Br$ and $κ-(ET)_2Cu(NCS)_2$ [A. Carrington et al., Phys. Rev. Lett 83, 4172 (1999)]. The transition temperature fell linearly with $1-η_{sc}$. Measurements were also made on $κ-(ET)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]\,Cl$ of normal isotopic abundance in which a very small amount of superconducting phase $η_{sc}≈10^{-4}$ developed, presumably through the strain-induced sample mounting. This material showed a power-law exponent of $n=1.64$, independent of the cooling rate.

Magnetic, thermal, and electronic-transport properties of EuMg 2 Bi 2 single crystals

The trigonal compound EuMg 2 Bi 2 has recently been discussed in terms of its topological band properties. These are intertwined with its magnetic properties. In this paper detailed studies of the magnetic, thermal, and electronic-transport properties of EuMg 2 Bi 2 single crystals are presented. The Eu + 2 spins 7/2 in EuMg 2 Bi 2 exhibit an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at a temperature T N = 6.7 K, as previously reported. By analyzing the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility χ data below T N in terms of molecular-field theory (MFT), the AFM structure is inferred to be a c -axis helix, where the ordered moments in the hexagonal a b -plane layers are aligned ferromagnetically in the a b plane with a turn angle between the moments in adjacent moment planes along the c axis of ≈ 120 ° . An alternate but less likely magnetic structure is a planar structure with nearest-neighbor Eu spins aligned at ≈ 120 ° with respect to each other, where these ordered-moment layers are stacked along the c axis. The magnetic heat capacity exhibits a λ anomaly at T N with evidence of dynamic short-range magnetic fluctuations both above and below T N . The high- T limit of the magnetic entropy is close to the theoretical value for spins 7/2. The in-plane electrical resistivity ρ ( T ) data indicate metallic character with a mild and disorder-sensitive upturn below T min = 23 K. An anomalous rapid drop in ρ ( T ) on cooling below T N as found in zero field is replaced by a two-step decrease in magnetic fields. The ρ ( T ) measurements also reveal an additional transition below T N in applied fields of unknown origin that is not observed in the other measurements and may be associated with an incommensurate to commensurate AFM transition. The dependence of T N on the c -axis magnetic field H ⊥ was derived from the field-dependent χ ( T ) , C p ( T ) , and ρ ( T ) measurements. This T N ( H ⊥ ) was found to be consistent with the prediction of MFT for a c -axis helix with S = 7 / 2 and was used to generate a phase diagram in the H ⊥ – T plane.

London penetration depth at zero temperature and near the superconducting transition

Herein, a simple relation is established between the zero- T penetration depth λ ( 0 ) and the slope of λ – 2 ( T ) near T c , similar to Helfand-Werthamer's relation for H c 2 ( 0 ) and the slope of H c 2 ( T ) at T c for the isotropic s -wave case with nonmagnetic scattering. When the scattering parameter ρ = ℏ v / 2 π T c ℓ ( v is the Fermi velocity and ℓ is the mean free path) varies from 1 to 10, the coefficient of proportionality between λ – 2 ( 0 ) and T c ( d λ – 2 / d T ) T c changes from 0.43 to 0.38. Combining this relation with the Rutgers thermodynamic identity, one can express λ ( 0 ) in terms of the slope ( d H c 2 / d T ) T c and the density of states.
