Ultrafast nuclear dynamics in double-core-ionized water molecules

Double-core-hole (DCH) states in isolated-water and heavy-water molecules, resulting from the sequential absorption of two x-ray photons, have been investigated. Here, a comparison of the subsequent Auger emission spectra from the two isotopes provides direct evidence of ultrafast nuclear motion during the 1.5-fs lifetime of these DCH states. Our numerical results align well with the experimental data, providing for various DCH states an in-depth study of the dynamics responsible of the observed isotope effect.

Alternative Pathway to Double-Core-Hole States

Excited double-core-hole states of isolated water molecules resulting from the sequential absorption of two x-ray photons have been investigated. Further, these states are formed through an alternative pathway, where the initial step of core ionization is accompanied by the shake-up of a valence electron, leading to the same final states as in the core-ionization followed by core-excitation pathway. The capability of the x-ray free-electron laser to deliver very intense, very short, and tunable light pulses is fully exploited to identify the two different pathways.

Energy variation of double K -shell photoionization of Ne

Herein we report on an experimental and theoretical study of double K-shell photoionization of Ne over the 2.3–8.5 keV x-ray energy range. The ratio of double-to-single K-shell photoionization cross sections was determined experimentally by measuring the relative rates of the KK–KL 2,3 L 2,3 ( 2 D) Auger hypersatellite and the K–L 2,3 L 2,3 ( 1 D) diagram Auger transitions. By scaling the hypersatellite-diagram Auger-electron ratios to KK/K cross-section ratios, comparison was made with theoretical cross-section ratios of He-like Ne 8+ determined by the R matrix with pseudostates method. The experimental Ne and theoretical Ne 8+ cross-section ratios show similar variations with energy, but the experimental ratios systematically exceed the calculated ratios and also show a lower threshold energy for double K-shell photoionization onset compared to the computed Ne 8+ threshold. The discrepancy is attributed to effects of L-shell electrons not included in the He-like Ne 8+ calculations. Quantified scaling with nuclear charge Z along the He-like isoelectronic sequence indicates that the measured 10-electron Z = 10 double K-shell photoionization cross section behaves like the computed He-like Z = 8.9 cross section, suggesting an effective nuclear screening parameter of s L =1.1 by the additional eight outer L-shell electrons. Experimental results for the energy variations of Auger electron transitions from other multielectron hole states are also discussed.

UV-induced dissociation of CH 2 BrI probed by intense femtosecond XUV pulses

The ultraviolet (UV)-induced dissociation and photofragmentation of gas-phase CH 2 BrI molecules induced by intense femtosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses at three different photon energies are studied by multi-mass ion imaging. Using a UV-pump–XUV-probe scheme, charge transfer between highly charged iodine ions and neutral CH 2 Br radicals produced by C–I bond cleavage is investigated. In earlier charge-transfer studies, the center of mass of the molecules was located along the axis of the bond cleaved by the pump pulse. In the present case of CH 2 BrI, this is not the case, thus inducing a rotation of the fragment. We discuss the influence of the rotation on the charge transfer process using a classical over-the-barrier model. Our modeling suggests that, despite the fact that the dissociation is slower due to the rotational excitation, the critical interatomic distance for charge transfer is reached faster. Furthermore, we suggest that charge transfer during molecular fragmentation may be modulated in a complex way.

Nonstatistical Behavior of the Photoionization of Spin-Orbit Doublets

The photoionization branching ratios of spin-orbit doublets are studied both experimentally and theoretically at energies several keV above threshold. The results show significant relativistic effects for Ar 2p in the autoionizing region below the 1s threshold, and large many-body effects for Xe 3d and 4d in the vicinity of the L-shell thresholds. The branching ratios in Xe are also found to vary significantly over very broad multi-keV energy regions both above and below the inner-shell thresholds. In addition, the Ar 2p study confirms experimentally the decades-old theoretical prediction that the nonresonant branching ratio does not approach the statistical (nonrelativistic) value, and, in fact, progressively diverges from statistical with increasing photon energy.
