A WRKY transcription factor confers broad-spectrum resistance to biotic stresses and yield stability in rice

Plants are subject to attack by diverse pests and pathogens. Few genes conferring broad-spectrum resistance to both insects and pathogens have been identified. Because of the growth–defense tradeoff, it is often challenging to balance biotic stress resistance and yield for crops. Here, we report thatOsWRKY36suppresses the resistance to insects and pathogens via transcriptional repression ofPhenylalanine Ammonia Lyases(PALs), a key enzyme in phenylpropanoid pathway in rice. Knocking outOsWRKY36causes elevated lignin biosynthesis and increased sclerenchyma thickness of leaf sheath, leading to enhanced resistance to multiple pests and pathogens. Additionally, loss ofOsWRKY36also derepresses the transcription ofIdeal Plant Architecture 1(IPA1) andMONOCULM2(MOC2), resulting in increased spikelet number per panicle and tiller number. These findings provide mechanistic insights into biotic stress tolerance in rice and offer a promising strategy to breed rice cultivars with broad-spectrum resistance to insects and pathogens while maintaining stable yield.

A type-I van der Waals heterostructure formed by monolayer WS 2 and trilayer PdSe 2

Two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures, formed by stacking 2D semiconductors through the van der Waals force, have been extensively studied recently. However, the majority of the heterostructures discovered so far possess type-II interfaces that facilitate interlayer charge separation. Type-I interfaces, on the other hand, confine both electrons and holes in one layer, which is beneficial for optical applications that utilize electron–hole radiative recombination. So far, only a few type-I 2D heterostructures have been achieved, which has limited the construction of multilayer heterostructures with sophisticated band landscapes. Here, we report experimental evidence of a type-I interface between monolayer WS 2 and trilayer PdSe 2 . Two-dimensional PdSe 2 has emerged as a promising material for infrared optoelectronic and other applications. We fabricated the heterostructure by stacking an exfoliated monolayer WS 2 flake on top of a trilayer PdSe 2 film, synthesized by chemical vapor deposition. Photoluminescence spectroscopy measurements revealed that the WS 2 exciton peak is significantly quenched in the heterostructure, confirming efficient excitation transfer from WS 2 to PdSe 2 . Femtosecond transient absorption measurements with various pump/probe configurations showed that both electrons and holes photoexcited in the WS 2 layer of the heterostructure can efficiently transfer to PdSe 2 , while neither type of carriers excited in PdSe 2 can transfer to WS 2 . These experimental findings establish a type-I band alignment between monolayer WS 2 and trilayer PdSe 2 . Furthermore, our results further highlight PdSe 2 as an important 2D material for constructing van der Waals heterostructures with emergent electronic and optoelectronic properties.

Effect of ground-state charge transfer on photoexcited charge transfer in transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures

We report an experimental investigation on the effect of ground-state charge transfer and its induced electric field on photoexcited charge transfer in van der Waals heterostructures. Two heterostructure samples were fabricated by stacking an undoped WSe 2 monolayer with either a Nb-doped or undoped MoSe 2 monolayer. While no ground-state charge transfer is expected in the MoSe 2 /WSe 2 heterostructure, the doped holes in the MoSe 2 :Nb/WSe 2 heterostructure can transfer to WSe 2 , creating a space-charge electric field. By comparing the photoluminescence and time-resolved differential reflectance of the two heterostructures, we find that photoexcited hole transfer from MoSe 2 to WSe 2 is largely blocked by this field, whereas photoexcited electron transfer from WSe 2 to MoSe 2 is less affected. Furthermore, these results provide insight into the impact of doping on the charge-transfer performance of van der Waals heterostructures.

Effect of niobium doping on excitonic dynamics in MoSe 2

Abstract Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have emerged as attractive two-dimensional semiconductors for future electronic and optoelectronic applications. Their charge transport properties, such as conductivity and the type of charge carriers, can be effectively controlled by substitutional doping of the transition metal atoms. However, the effects of doping on the excitonic properties, particularly their dynamical properties, have been less studied. Using Nb-doped MoSe 2 as a case study, we experimentally investigate the effect of doping on excitonic dynamics in TMDs. Transient absorption measurements are used to directly compare the dynamical properties of excitons in Nb-doped MoSe 2 across monolayer, bilayer, and bulk flakes with their undoped counterparts. The exciton lifetimes in Nb-doped flakes are significantly shorter than those in their undoped counterparts. This effect is attributed to the trapping of excitons in defect states introduced by Nb impurities. These results reveal an important consequence of Nb doping on excitonic dynamics in TMDs.

Ultrafast transient absorption measurements of photocarrier dynamics in PdSe 2

We investigate the photocarrier dynamics in bulk PdSe 2 , a layered transition metal dichalcogenide with a novel pentagonal structure and unique electronic and optical properties. Using femtosecond transient absorption microscopy, we study the behavior of photocarriers in mechanically exfoliated bulk PdSe 2 flakes at room temperature. By employing a 400 nm ultrafast laser pulse, electron–hole pairs are generated, and their dynamics are probed using an 800 nm detection pulse. Our findings reveal that the lifetime of photocarriers in bulk PdSe 2 is approximately 210 ps. Furthermore, by spatially resolving the differential reflection signal, we determine a photocarrier diffusion coefficient of about 7.3 cm 2 s –1 . Based on these results, we estimate a diffusion length of around 400 nm and a photocarrier mobility of approximately 300 cm 2 V –1 s –1 . Furthermore, these results shed light on the ultrafast optoelectronic properties of PdSe 2 , offer valuable insights into photocarriers in this emerging material, and enable design of high-performance optoelectronic devices based on PdSe 2 .

Energy transfer in a type-I van der Waals heterostructure of WSe 2 /PtSe 2

Abstract Energy transfer of a van der Waals heterostructure formed by monolayers of WSe 2 and PtSe 2 is studied by steady-state photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy. The heterostructure sample is fabricated by transferring a mechanically exfoliated WSe 2 monolayer onto a PtSe 2 monolayer film obtained by chemical vapor deposition. The sample is thermally annealed to improve the interface quality. PL of the heterostructure is quenched by four times compared to the individual WSe 2 monolayer, indicating excitation transfer from WSe 2 to PtSe 2 . Femtosecond transient absorption measurements with two configurations show that both the electrons and the holes can transfer from WSe 2 to PtSe 2 on a sub-picosecond time scale, while neither can transfer from PtSe 2 to WSe 2 . These results indicate that WSe 2 and PtSe 2 monolayers form a type-I band alignment with both the conduction band minimum and the valence band maximum in the PtSe 2 layer.

Fast Exciton Diffusion in Monolayer PtSe2

Recently, 2D noble metal dichalcogenides have drawn considerable attention due to their thickness-tunable electronic and optical properties. However, the dynamical properties of photocarriers in these materials are less studied. In this report photocarrier dynamics in monolayer and bilayer PtSe 2 samples prepared by chemical vapor deposition are studied by transient absorption microscopy. Spatially and temporally resolved differential reflectance measurements yield room-temperature exciton lifetimes of 25 and 50 ps for monolayer and bilayer samples, respectively. The exciton diffusion coefficient in monolayer PtSe 2 is found to be as large as 48 cm 2 s -1 . This value is higher than exciton diffusion coefficients of most known monolayer semiconductors. The deduced exciton mobility is close to the theoretical limit of charge carrier mobility of monolayer PtSe 2 . The superior exciton transport property is unique to monolayers, as the exciton diffusion coefficient drops to 6.7 cm 2 s -1 in bilayers PtSe 2 . The novel exciton transport properties, along with its high air stability, make monolayer PtSe 2 an attractive material for ultrathin excitonic devices. These results provide insights on the exciton dynamic properties of 2D PtSe 2 and help develop fundamental understanding on the performance of various optoelectronic devices based on 2D PtSe 2 . .

Ultrafast charge transfer and carrier dynamics in a WS 2 /MoSe 2 few-layer van der Waals heterostructure

Photocarrier dynamics including interlayer charge transfer and intralayer valley scattering are studied in a heterostructure formed by trilayer WS 2 and MoSe 2 . The sample is fabricated by mechanical exfoliation and dry transfer and characterized by atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence measurements. The conduction band minima of the two materials are nearly degenerate, representing a unique band alignment. Layer-selective pump–probe measurements are performed with three configurations to reveal a complete picture of the photocarrier dynamics. By comparing the heterostructure with the two individual trilayer materials in each experimental configuration, ultrafast interlayer charge transfer is unambiguously observed, which occurs on the same time scale as the intralayer valley scattering of the photocarriers. The quasi-equilibrium distribution of electrons in the two layers mediate the fast carrier recombination process. Furthermore, these results show that the band structures of the few-layer transition metal dichalcogenides can enable rich photocarrier dynamics with intermediate band alignments that are complementary to the previously studied monolayer–monolayer heterostructures.

Charge Transfer Properties of Heterostructures Formed by Bi 2 O 2 Se and Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Monolayers

Atomically thin bismuth oxyselenide (Bi 2 O 2 Se) exhibits attractive properties for electronic and optoelectronic applications, such as high charge-carrier mobility and good air stability. Recently, the development of Bi 2 O 2 Se-based heterostructures have attracted enormous interests with promising prospects for diverse device applications. Although the electrical properties of Bi 2 O 2 Se-based heterostructures have been widely studied, the interlayer charge transfer in these heterostructures remains elusive, despite its importance in harnessing their emergent functionalities. Here, a comprehensive experimental investigation on the interlayer charge transfer properties of two heterostructures formed by Bi 2 O 2 Se and representative transition metal dichalcogenides (namely, WS 2 /Bi 2 O 2 Se and MoS 2 /Bi 2 O 2 Se) is reported. In this work, Kelvin probe force microscopy is used to measure the work functions of the samples, which are further employed to establish type-II band alignment of both heterostructures. Photoluminescence quenching is observed in each heterostructure, suggesting high charge transfer efficiency. Time-resolved and layer-selective pump–probe measurements further prove the ultrafast interlayer charge transfer processes and formation of long-lived interlayer excitons. These results establish the feasibility of integrating 2D Bi 2 O 2 Se with other 2D semiconductors to fabricate heterostructures with novel charge transfer properties and provide insight for understanding the performance of optoelectronic devices based on such 2D heterostructures.

Ultrafast Interlayer Charge Transfer between Bilayer PtSe 2 and Monolayer WS 2

Interlayer charge transfer (CT) between PtSe 2 and WS 2 is studied experimentally. Layer-selective pump–probe and photoluminescence quenching measurements reveal ultrafast interlayer CT in the heterostructure formed by bilayer PtSe 2 and monolayer WS 2 , confirming its type-II band alignment. The CT facilitates the formation of the interlayer excitons with a lifetime of several hundred ps to 1 ns, a diffusion coefficient of 0.9 cm 2 s –1 , and a diffusion length reaching 200 nm. Furthermore, these results demonstrate the integration of PtSe 2 with other materials in van der Waals heterostructures with novel charge-transfer properties and help develop fundamental understanding on the performance of various optoelectronic devices based on heterostructures involving PtSe 2 .

Photocarrier Dynamics in MoTe 2 Nanofilms with 2 H and Distorted 1 T Lattice Structures

Molybdenum telluride (MoTe 2 ), an emerging layered two-dimensional (2D) material, possesses excellent phase-changing properties. Previous studies revealed its reversible transition between 2H and 1T' phases with a transition energy as small as 35 meV. Since 1T'-MoTe 2 is metallic, it can serve as an electrical contact for semiconducting 2H-MoTe 2 -based optoelectronic devices. Here, the photocarrier dynamics in MoTe 2 nanofilms synthesized by a one-step method and with coexisting multiple phases are investigated by transient absorption measurements. Both the energy relaxation time and the recombination lifetime of the excitons are shorter in the 1T'-MoTe 2 compared to its 2H phase. Furthermore, these results provide information on the different photocarrier dynamical properties of these two phases, which is important for future 2D optoelectronic and phase-change electronic devices based on MoTe 2 .

SIRT1 reduces epigenetic and non-epigenetic changes to maintain the quality of postovulatory aged oocytes in mice

Highlights: • The intensity of H3K9ac and H3K4me2/3 increased in postovulatory aged oocytes. • SIRT1 overexpression inhibited the increase of H3K9ac and H3K4me2/3. • SIRT1 overexpression ameliorated aging-induced epigenetic and non-epigenetic changes in oocytes. Postovulatory oocyte aging has a major influence on the development potential of embryos. Many antioxidants can delay oocyte aging by regulating the expression of SIRT1. However, there is a lack of knowledge on SIRT1 function in postovulatory oocyte aging. In vitro transcribed RNA of Sirt1 was injected into fresh oocytes to investigate the function of SIRT1 during postovulatory oocyte aging. In the present study, SIRT1 was found to be down-regulated in aged oocytes compared with fresh oocytes. Meanwhile the intensity of acetylation of H3K9 (H3K9ac) and H3K4 methylation increased in postovulatory aged oocytes. After the oocytes were injected with SIRT1 and aged for 12 h, the intensity of H3K9ac and H3K4 methylation markedly decreased compared with controls. Furthermore, SIRT1 overexpression also reduced the aging-induced oocyte morphological changes and reactive oxygen species accumulation, maintained the spindle normal morphology and attenuated the aging-associated abnormalities of mitochondrial function. The role of SIRT1 in protecting oocyte aging was diminished when oocytes with overexpressed SIRT1 were cultured with SIRT1 inhibitor EX-527. Briefly, these present results show that SIRT1 not only reduced the non-epigenetic changes such as abnormal oocyte morphology, ROS accumulation, spindle defects and mitochondrial dysfunctions but also regulated the epigenetic changes in order to maintain the quality of postovulatory aged oocytes.

Photocarrier Dynamics in TlGaS 2 Nanoflakes and van der Waals Heterostructures with Hexagonal Boron Nitride and WS 2 Nanoflakes: Implications for Optoelectronic Applications

We present an experimental investigation on photocarrier dynamics in a TlGaS 2 bulk crystal and its heterostructures with hexagonal BN and WS 2 . The samples were obtained by mechanical exfoliation and dry transfer techniques. The photocarrier dynamics was monitored by a transient absorption technique. We observed a direct optical transition of about 555 nm in the TlGaS 2 crystal. By utilizing transient absorption of that transition, we obtained a hot-carrier energy relaxation time of less than 1 ps and a carrier lifetime of about 300 ps in TlGaS 2 at room temperature. In the hexagonal-BN-TlGaS 2 heterostructure, the photocarrier dynamics was similar to that in TlGaS 2 , indicating the type-I band alignment of this structure with both band extremes located in TlGaS 2 . In the monolayer WS 2 -TlGaS 2 heterostructure, we observed charge transfer from TlGaS 2 to WS 2 and an extended lifetime of the transferred carriers in WS 2 . Here, these results introduce TlGaS 2 as a promising layered material for developing two-dimensional van der Waals materials that can be combined with other two-dimensional materials for various optoelectronic devices.
