Updates and Lessons Learned from NuMI Beamline at Fermilab

The Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beamline at Fermilab generates an intense muon neutrino beam for the NOvA (NuMI Off-axis šœˆš‘’ Appearance) long baseline neutrino experiment. Over the years, the NuMI beamline has been pivotal in advancing neutrino physics, providing invaluable data and insights. This presentation offers updates and a comprehensive review of the lessons learned from the operation, maintenance, and monitoring of the NuMI beamline. Key topics include the optimization of beam performance, challenges in maintaining beamline stability, and proposed Machine Learning implementations to enhance monitoring. The talk aims to share best practices and provide a roadmap for future beamline projects, including the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF).

Achievement in Beam Power Records for the NOvA Target System

We began upgrading the NOvA target system for 1-Mega Watt (1-MW) beam operation in 2017. Major challenges included maintaining the quality of neutrino beams with reliable instrumentation, reducing instantaneous beam heating on the target, increasing cooling power to handle the high-power beam, and controlling tritium water production rate. We finally achieved a one-hour beam power record of 1.018 MW in Summer 2024. This milestone demonstrates our capability to operate at 2+ MW beam power for the future Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) and Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE).

Uniform Beam Simulation Technique for Beam Scans and Machine Learning Studies at Fermilab

Fermilab's neutrino facilities, including NuMI and the upcoming LBNF, use proton beams to produce positively and negatively charged pions and kaons. Detailed simulations are necessary to study particle interactions and beam propagation. To efficiently analyze beam scan effects, we propose a technique to generate multiple simulation samples with high statistics. These samples can be used to develop beamline simulation based machine learning applications. In this technique, we generate a uniformly distributed single simulation data sample. We calculate Gaussian weights for each beam configurations and apply them to post-processing measurements. In this poster, we demonstrate the proposed simulation technique. This technique reduces simulation time and computing resources significantly.

NuMI Beam Monitoring Simulation and Data Analysis Status and Progress

With the Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS) experiment decommissioned, muon and hadron monitors became an important diagnostic tool for the NuMI O↵- axis vμ Appearance (NOvA) experiment at Fermilab to monitor the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam. The goal of this study is to maintain the quality of the monitor signals and to establish correlations with the neutrino beam profile. And we carry out a systematic study of the response of the muon monitors to the changes in the parameters of the proton beam and lattice parameters. We report here on the progress of the beam data analysis and comparison with the simulation results.
