Alpha particle heating in hot diamagnetic cavities

Observational data from ISEE 1 are analyzed and a one-dimensional electromagnetic hybrid computer simulation is conducted for the heating of solar wind alpha particles in hot diamagnetic cavities (HDCs). In the simulation, which envisions alpha heating by ion-ion instabilities, low beam densities excite the proton/proton right-hand resonant instability that then pitch-angle scatters the beam without significantly heating the alphas. At greater beam densities, the proton/proton nonresonant instability undergoes saturation through a trapping of all three ion components. These results support the Thomsen et al. (1988) hypothesis that the nonresonant instability is the primary source of ion heating in hot diamagnetic cavities.

Computer simulations of two-pickup-ion instabilities in a cometary environment

This paper presents a one-dimensional electromagnetic hybrid computer simulation of distant cometary environments, in which protons and oxygen ions are injected continuously at the same time. It is demonstrated that, when, instead of a single component, both protons and oxygen ions are injected, the faster growing shorter-wavelength proton-proton right-hand resonant instability dominates the early time physics, leading to linear temporal growth of the fluctuating magnetic field energy density and pitch angle scattering of the protons (but causing no significant response by the nonresonant oxygen ions). At later times, as the injected oxygen ions accumulate sufficient density, the oxygen-proton right-hand resonant instability emerges, exhibiting exponential temporal growth to a relatively large peak amplitude, phase bunching, and magnetically trapping the oxygen ions. At times after peak amplitude, the oxygen-proton fluctuations stochastically accelerate some of the injected protons.

Linearly polarized magnetic fluctuations at comet Giacobini-Zinner

The fully electromagnetic linear Vlasov dispersion equation for instabilities in a homogeneous, magnetized plasma is solved. Parameters appropriate to conditions observed during the ICE encounter with comet Giacobini-Zinner are used to study the polarization of electromagnetic instabilities driven by the relative streaming of two ion components. If the ion/ion relative drift is near the Alfven speed, the associated long-wavelength modes may be approximately linearly polarized at relatively small angles of propagation with respect to the magnetic field. The relatively inhomogeneous plasma background of the comet may impose such oblique propagation, so that this result provides an alternate explanation to the observations of linearly polarized waves near the comet.

The development of shell-like distributions from newborn cometary ions

One-dimensional hybrid computer simulations that are spatially homogeneous are used to investigate the evolution of newborn cometary ions that interact self-consistently with the solar wind. Cometary ions injected at a constant rate are scattered by the growing electromagnetic fluctuations resulting from the associated free energy, and the scattering at relatively low fluctuating field amplitudes leads to shell-like velocity distributions which subtend about 4 pi in solid angle but which have small spread in speed. Shell-like distributions are found to occur when the ion injection rate is relatively slow, when the injected ion mass is relatively light, and when the energy density of the fluctuating magnetic fields exhibits linear growth.
