Prognostic importance of the preoperative New‐Naples prognostic score for patients with gastric cancer

Abstract Background The wide applicability of the Naples prognostic score (NPS) is still worthy of further study in gastric cancer (GC). This study aimed to construct a New‐NPS based on the differences in immunity and nutrition in patients with upper and lower gastrointestinal tumors to help obtain an individualized prediction of prognosis. Methods This study retrospectively analyzed patients who underwent radical gastrectomy from April 2014 to September 2016. The cutoff values of the preoperative neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte‐to‐monocyte ratio (LMR), serum albumin (Alb), and total cholesterol (TC) were calculated by ROC curve analysis. ROC and t‐ROC were used to evaluate the accuracy of the prognostic markers. The Kaplan–Meier method and log‐rank test were used to analyze the overall survival probability. Univariate and multivariate analyses based on Cox risk regression were used to show the independent predictors. The nomogram was made by R studio. The predictive accuracy of nomogram was assessed using a calibration plot, concordance index (C‐index), and decision curve. Results A total of 737 patients were included in training cohort, 411 patients were included in validation cohort. ROC showed that the New‐NPS was more suitable for predicting the prognosis of GC patients. NPS = 2 indicated a poor prognosis. Multivariate analysis showed that CEA ( P = 0.026), Borrmann type ( P = 0.001), pTNM ( P < 0.001), New‐NPS ( P < 0.001), and nerve infiltration ( P = 0.035) were independent risk factors for prognosis. Conclusion The New‐NPS based on the cutoff values of NLR, LMR, Alb, and TC is not only suitable for predicting prognosis but can also be combined with clinicopathological characteristics to construct a nomogram model for GC patients.

Hydrogen bonds enhanced composite polymer electrolyte for high-voltage cathode of solid-state lithium battery

Polymer electrolyte is one of the important components for developing advanced solid-state lithium batteries (SSLBs). However, the narrow electrochemical stability window restricts the practical application with high-voltage cathodes. In this study, a series of composite solid electrolytes (CSEs), possessing both wide electrochemical stability window (up to 5.0 V vs. Li + /Li) and high ionic conductivity (over 1.35×10 -3 S/cm at 25 °C), were reported by integrating SiO 2 nanoparticles into poly(vinyl ethylene carbonate) polymer electrolyte. The enhanced anti-oxidation performances are mainly caused and confirmed by the local intermolecular interactions of hydrogen bonds in CSE. Based on this CSE, the SSLBs with LiCoO 2 cathode present good cycle stability at high voltage, and the capacity retention with 4.5 V cut-off voltage is about 94% after 200 cycles. This work not only proves the importance of intermolecular interactions in CSE, but also provides an effective method for achieving high-energy SSLBs with enhanced interface compatibility between polymer electrolyte and highvoltage cathodes

EGLP-1 lowers body weight better than exendin-4 by reducing food intake and increasing basal energy expenditure in diet-induced obese mice

It is well known that GLP-1 activates GLP-1R to reduce body weight by inhibiting eating. GLP-1 is cleaved by the neutral endopeptidase (NEP) 24.11 into a pentapeptide GLP-1 (32–36) amide, which increases basal energy expenditure and inhibits weight gain in obese mice. It is well known that GLP-1 analogs can reduce weight by suppressing eating. However, there are few reports of reducing weight through the dual effects of inhibiting eating and increasing basic energy. Here, we report the peptide EGLP-1, a GLP-1 analogue, which can reduce food intake and increase basal energy expenditure. In C2C12 myotubes, EGLP-1 can increase both phosphorylation of acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACC) and the ratio between phosphorylation of ACC and the total expression of ACC (pACC/ACC). In diet-induced obese mice, EGLP-1 is more effective than exendin-4 in reducing body weight, reducing fat mass and improving hepatic steatosis. At the same time, EGLP-1 can improve hyperglycemia, reduce food intake, and improve insulin resistance, just like exendin-4. In addition, EGLP-1, not exendin-4, can improve physiological parameters associated with lipid metabolism and increase oxygen consumption by increasing uncoupling proteins 3 (UCP3) expression and pACC/ACC ratio in skeletal muscle. Taken together, this data showed that EGLP-1 is able to reduce body weight by reducing food intake and increasing basal energy expenditure, suggesting it may be more effective in treating diabetic and non-diabetic overweight or obese people than pure GLP-1R agonist exendin-4.

Memristive Behavior Enabled by Amorphous–Crystalline 2D Oxide Heterostructure

The emergence of memristive behavior in amorphous–crystalline 2D oxide heterostructures, which are synthesized by atomic layer deposition (ALD) of a few-nanometer amorphous Al 2 O 3 layers onto atomically thin single-crystalline ZnO nanosheets, is demonstrated. The conduction mechanism is identified based on classic oxygen vacancy conductive channels. ZnO nanosheets provide a 2D host for oxygen vacancies, while the amorphous Al 2 O 3 facilitates the generation and stabilization of the oxygen vacancies. The conduction mechanism in the high-resistance state follows Poole–Frenkel emission, and in the the low-resistance state is fitted by the Mott–Gurney law. From the slope of the fitting curve, the mobility in the low-resistance state is estimated to be ≈2400 cm 2 V -1 s -1 , which is the highest value reported in semiconductor oxides. When annealed at high temperature to eliminate oxygen vacancies, Al is doped into the ZnO nanosheet, and the memristive behavior disappears, further confirming the oxygen vacancies as being responsible for the memristive behavior. The 2D heterointerface offers opportunities for new design of high-performance memristor devices.
