Strain Programming of Oxygen Octahedral Symmetry in Perovskite Oxide Thin Films

The collective rotations of oxygen octahedra play an important role in determining the physical properties of functional perovskite oxides. The epitaxial strain can serve as an effective means to modify the oxygen octahedral symmetry (OOS), i.e., oxygen octahedral rotation or tilt (OOR/OOT). However, the strain-OOS coupling that may alter the details of the OOS, thereby the physical properties, has not been fully understood. In this work, it is demonstrated that epitaxial strain can not only induce a structural phase transition but also precisely tune the degree of OOR. The correlated metal CaNbO 3 , which is orthorhombic, is studied by growing as epitaxial thin films. By imposing epitaxial strain, it is found that the film undergoes a structural phase transition from orthorhombic to tetragonal upon fully straining (i.e., from a + b − b − to a 0 a 0 c − ). In unstrained films, the octahedral rotation along the c-axis is as large as 15.7° that can be tuned to 6.6° by strain. This finding offers a general approach to manipulating OOR/OOT via strain engineering in complex oxide heterostructures.

Theoretical Investigation of Delafossite-Cu 2 ZnSnO 4 as a Promising Photovoltaic Absorber

In the quest for efficient and cost-effective photovoltaic absorber materials beyond silicon, considerable attention has been directed toward exploring alternatives. One such material, zincblende-derived Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS), has shown promise due to its ideal band gap size and high absorption coefficient. However, challenges such as structural defects and secondary phase formation have hindered its development. In this study, we examine the potential of another compound, Cu2ZnSnO4 (CZTO), with a similar composition to CZTS as a promising alternative. Employing ab initio density function theory (DFT) calculations in combination with an evolutionary structure prediction algorithm, we identify that the crystalline phase of delafossite structure is the most stable among the 900 (meta)stable CZTO. Its thermodynamic stability at room temperature is also confirmed by the molecular dynamics study. Excitingly, this new phase of CZTO displays a direct band gap where the dipole-allowed transition occurs, making it a strong candidate for efficient light absorptions. Furthermore, the estimation of spectroscopic limited maximum efficiency (SLME) directly demonstrates the high potential of delafossite-CZTO as a photovoltaic absorber. Our numerical results suggest that delafossite-CZTO holds promise for future photovoltaic applications.

Thermodynamic Understanding of Impurity Phase Segregation in a PdCrO 2 /CuCrO 2 Heterostructure

Abstract PdCrO 2 films are synthesized on CuCrO 2 buffer layers on Al 2 O 3 substrates. This synthesis is accompanied by impurity phase segregation, which hampers the synthesis of high quality PdCrO 2 films. Potential causes ofth impurity phase segregation are studied by using a combination of experiments and ab initio calculations. X‐ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy experiments reveal impurity phases of Cu x Pd 1 − x alloy and chromium oxides, Cr 2 O 3 and Cr 3 O 4 , in PdCrO 2 . Calculations determine that oxygen deficiency can cause the impurity phase segregation. Therefore, preventing oxygen release from delafossites can suppress the impurity phase segregation. The amounts of Cr 2 O 3 and Cr 3 O 4 depend on temperature and oxygen partial pressure. A reasonable theory‐based explanation for this experimental observation is provided.

Discovery of conjoined charge density waves in the kagome superconductor CsV3Sb5

Abstract The electronic instabilities in CsV 3 Sb 5 are believed to originate from the V 3 d -electrons on the kagome plane, however the role of Sb 5 p -electrons for 3-dimensional orders is largely unexplored. Here, using resonant tender X-ray scattering and high-pressure X-ray scattering, we report a rare realization of conjoined charge density waves (CDWs) in CsV 3 Sb 5 , where a 2 × 2 × 1 CDW in the kagome sublattice and a Sb 5 p -electron assisted 2 × 2 × 2 CDW coexist. At ambient pressure, we discover a resonant enhancement on Sb L 1 -edge (2 s →5 p ) at the 2 × 2 × 2 CDW wavevectors. The resonance, however, is absent at the 2 × 2 × 1 CDW wavevectors. Applying hydrostatic pressure, CDW transition temperatures are separated, where the 2 × 2 × 2 CDW emerges 4 K above the 2 × 2 × 1 CDW at 1 GPa. These observations demonstrate that symmetry-breaking phases in CsV 3 Sb 5 go beyond the minimal framework of kagome electronic bands near van Hove filling.

Tunable Ferromagnetism in LaCoO 3 Epitaxial Thin Films

We report ferromagnetic insulators play a crucial role in the development of low-dissipation quantum magnetic devices for spintronics. Epitaxial LaCoO 3 thin film is a prominent ferromagnetic insulator, in which the robust ferromagnetic ordering emerges owing to epitaxial strain. Whereas it is evident that strong spin-lattice coupling induces ferromagnetism, the reported ferromagnetic properties of epitaxially strained LaCoO 3 thin films are highly consistent. For example, even under largely modulated degree of strain, the reported Curie temperatures of epitaxially strained LaCoO 3 thin films lie in a narrow range of 80–85 K, without much deviation. In this study, substantial enhancement (≈18%) in the Curie temperature of epitaxial LaCoO 3 thin films is demonstrated via crystallographic orientation dependence. By changing the crystallographic orientation of the films from (111) to (110), the crystal-field energy is reduced and the charge transfer between the Co and O orbitals is enhanced. These modifications lead to a considerable enhancement of the ferromagnetic properties (including the Curie temperature and magnetization), despite the identical nominal degree of epitaxial strain. The findings of this study provide insights into facile tunability of ferromagnetic properties via structural symmetry control in LaCoO 3 .

Extremely large magnetoresistance in high-mobility SrNbO 3 /SrTiO 3 heterostructures

In this report an extremely large linear magnetoresistance (LMR) is a ubiquitous phenomenon emerging from topological Dirac and Weyl semimetals. However, the connection between an LMR and a nontrivial topology is under extensive debate. In this paper, by precisely controlling the thickness of SrNbO 3 thin films grown on SrTiO 3 substrates, we observe an LMR over a large carrier density range with a magnetoresistance as high as 150000% at a carrier density n~10 21 cm -3 , far away from the quantum-limit regime. The temperature-, magnetic-field-, and carrier-density-dependent LMR in SrNbO 3 /SrTiO 3 heterostructures provides compelling evidence of a mobility-driven LMR in coherent electronic systems. Our results uncover the general principle of an LMR and shed light on proper categorization of transport properties in topological and correlated materials.

Effects of Sn substitution in SrRuO 3 epitaxial films

Epitaxial SrRu 1–x Sn x O 3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) thin films were deposited on SrTiO 3 (001) substrates by sequential two-target synthesis using pulsed laser deposition to achieve stable phases in this family of quaternary perovskites. The SrRu 1–x Sn x O 3 films exhibit a good crystalline quality, a sharp interface between film and substrate, and an atomically smooth surface. A gradual expansion of the c-axis lattice parameter was observed with Sn doping serving as a means to tune chemical pressure and magnetism. With an increase in Sn doping, the resistivity of the film increased, and the ferromagnetism decreased. These results illustrate use of lattice engineering, e.g., tuning of c-axis lattice parameter with chemical doping, to control electronic and magnetic properties of epitaxial thin films for applications in oxide electronics.

Correlated oxide Dirac semimetal in the extreme quantum limit

Quantum materials (QMs) with strong correlation and nontrivial topology are indispensable to next-generation information and computing technologies. Exploitation of topological band structure is an ideal starting point to realize correlated topological QMs. Here, we report that strain-induced symmetry modification in correlated oxide SrNbO 3 thin films creates an emerging topological band structure. Dirac electrons in strained SrNbO 3 films reveal ultrahigh mobility (μ max ≈ 100,000 cm 2 /Vs), exceptionally small effective mass (m* ~ 0.04m e ), and nonzero Berry phase. Strained SrNbO 3 films reach the extreme quantum limit, exhibiting a sign of fractional occupation of Landau levels and giant mass enhancement. Our results suggest that symmetry-modified SrNbO 3 is a rare example of correlated oxide Dirac semimetals, in which strong correlation of Dirac electrons leads to the realization of a novel correlated topological QM.

Strain-Induced Atomic-Scale Building Blocks for Ferromagnetism in Epitaxial LaCoO 3

The origin of strain-induced ferromagnetism, which is robust regardless of the type and degree of strain in LaCoO 3 (LCO) thin films, is enigmatic despite intensive research efforts over the past decade. Here, by combining scanning transmission electron microscopy with ab initio density functional theory plus U calculations, we report that the ferromagnetism does not emerge directly from the strain itself but rather from the creation of compressed structural units within ferroelastically formed twin-wall domains. Here, the compressed structural units are magnetically active with the rocksalt-type high-spin/low-spin order. Our study highlights that the ferroelastic nature of ferromagnetic structural units is important for understanding the intriguing ferromagnetic properties in LCO thin films.

Twin-Domain Formation in Epitaxial Triangular Lattice Delafossites

Twin domains are often found as structural defects in symmetry mismatched epitaxial thin films. The delafossite ABO 2 , which has a rhombohedral structure, is a good example that often forms twin domains. Although bulk metallic delafossites are known to be the most conducting oxides, high conductivity is yet to be realized in thin film forms. Suppressed conductivity found in thin films is mainly caused by the formation of twin domains, and their boundaries can be a source of scattering centers for charge carriers. To overcome this challenge, the underlying mechanism for their formation must be understood so that such defects can be controlled and eliminated. Here, we report the origin of structural twins formed in a CuCrO 2 delafossite thin film on a substrate with hexagonal or triangular symmetries. A robust heteroepitaxial relationship is found for the delafossite film with the substrate, and the surface termination turns out to be critical to determine and control the domain structure of epitaxial delafossites. Based on such discoveries, we also demonstrate twin-free epitaxial thin films grown on high-miscut substrates. Finally, this finding provides an important synthesis strategy for growing single-domain delafossite thin films and can be applied to other delafossites for the epitaxial synthesis of high-quality thin films.

Epitaxial Stabilization of Metastable 3C BaRuO 3 Thin Film with Ferromagnetic Non-Fermi Liquid Phase

Thin films of perovskite ruthenates of the general formula ARuO 3 (A = Ca and Sr) are versatile electrical conductors for viable oxide electronics. They are also scientifically intriguing, as they exhibit nontrivial electromagnetic ground states depending on the A-site element. Among them, realization of the cubic perovskite (3C) BaRuO 3 in thin film form has been a challenge so far, because the 3C phase is metastable with the largest formation energy among the various polymorph phases of BaRuO 3 . In this study, 3C BaRuO 3 thin films are successfully prepared employing epitaxial stabilization. Here the 3C BaRuO 3 thin films show itinerant ferromagnetism with a transition temperature of ≈48 K and a non-Fermi liquid phase. The epitaxial stabilization of the 3C BaRuO 3 further enables to make a standard comparison of perovskite ruthenates, thereby establishing the importance of the Ru-O orbital hybridization in understanding the itinerant magnetic system.

Atomic Structure of the Initial Nucleation Layer in Hexagonal Perovskite BaRuO 3 Thin Films

Hexagonal perovskites are an attractive family of materials due to their various polymorphs and rich structure–property relationships. BaRuO 3 (BRO) is a prototypical hexagonal perovskite, in which the electromagnetic properties are significantly modified depending on its lattice structure. Whereas thin-film synthesis would allow the study of the diverse properties of hexagonal perovskites by epitaxially stabilizing various metastable polymorphs, the epitaxial growth of hexagonal perovskites, especially at the initial growth stage, is yet to be addressed. In this study, it is shown that an intriguing nucleation behavior takes place during the initial stabilization of a hexagonal 9R BRO thin film deposited on a (111) SrTiO 3 (STO) substrate. It is found that a nanoscale strained layer composed of different RuO 6 octahedral stacking is initially formed at the interface followed by a relaxed single crystal 9R BRO thin film. Within the interface layer, hexagonal BRO is nucleated on the (111) STO substrate by both face- and corner-sharing octahedra. More interestingly, it is found that boundaries between differently stacked nucleation layers (heterostructural boundaries) facilitate strain relaxation, in addition to the formation of conventional misfit dislocations evolved from homostructural boundaries. The observations reveal an important underlying mechanism to understand the thin-film epitaxy and strain accommodation in hexagonal perovskites.

Templated epitaxy of TiO 2 (B) on a perovskite

The bronze-phase TiO 2 (B) has an open atomic framework that makes it a good candidate for applications in photochemical and electrochemical conversion of energy. However, the synthesis of bronze-phase TiO 2 (B) thin films on perovskite substrates, such as SrTiO 3 (STO), which is one of the most conventional versatile substrates for oxide epitaxy, has been extremely challenging owing to the preferential formation of the anatase TiO 2 over TiO 2 (B). The main reason is that the anatase TiO 2 has not only a smaller lattice mismatch than TiO 2 (B), but also a better structural symmetry match when grown on STO. Here, we demonstrate a way to circumventing this problem by using a VO 2 (B) buffer layer, yielding the growth of a high-quality single crystalline TiO 2 (B) film on a (001)-oriented STO substrate. Finally, from the resulting TiO 2 (B) film, we found that this film has a large optical bandgap of ~3.6 eV, which is close to the known theoretical value, the largest among TiO 2 polymorphs, and useful for developing high-power energy devices.

Interfacial stabilization for epitaxial CuCrO 2 delafossites

AB O 2 delafossites are fascinating materials that exhibit a wide range of physical properties, including giant Rashba spin splitting and anomalous Hall effects, because of their characteristic layered structures composed of noble metal A and strongly correlated B O 2 sublayers. However, thin film synthesis is known to be extremely challenging owing to their low symmetry rhombohedral structures, which limit the selection of substrates for thin film epitaxy. Hexagonal lattices, such as those provided by Al 2 O 3 (0001) and (111) oriented cubic perovskites, are promising candidates for epitaxy of delafossites. However, the formation of twin domains and impurity phases is hard to suppress, and the nucleation and growth mechanisms thereon have not been studied for the growth of epitaxial delafossites. In this study, we report the epitaxial stabilization of a new interfacial phase formed during pulsed-laser epitaxy of (0001)-oriented CuCrO 2 epitaxial thin films on Al 2 O 3 substrates. Through a combined study using scanning transmission electron microscopy/electron-energy loss spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, we report that the nucleation of a thermodynamically stable, atomically thick CuCr 1-x Al x O 2 interfacial layer is the critical element for the epitaxy of CuCrO 2 delafossites on Al 2 O 3 substrates. This finding provides key insights into the thermodynamic mechanism for the nucleation of intermixing-induced buffer layers that can be used for the growth of other noble-metal-based delafossites, which are known to be challenging due to the difficulty in initial nucleation.

Interfacial tuning of chiral magnetic interactions for large topological Hall effects in LaMnO 3 /SrIrO 3 heterostructures

Chiral interactions in magnetic systems can give rise to rich physics manifested, for example, as nontrivial spin textures. The foremost interaction responsible for chiral magnetism is the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), resulting from inversion symmetry breaking in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling. However, the atomistic origin of DMIs and their relationship to emergent electrodynamic phenomena, such as topological Hall effect (THE), remain unclear. Here, we investigate the role of interfacial DMIs in 3 d –5 d transition metal-oxide-based LaMnO 3 /SrIrO 3 superlattices on THE from a chiral spin texture. By additively engineering the interfacial inversion symmetry with atomic-scale precision, we directly link the competition between interfacial collinear ferromagnetic interactions and DMIs to an enhanced THE. The ability to control the DMI and resulting THE points to a pathway for harnessing interfacial structures to maximize the density of chiral spin textures useful for developing high-density information storage and quantum magnets for quantum information science.

Pulsed-laser epitaxy of metallic delafossite PdCrO 2 films

Alternate stacking of a highly conducting metallic layer with a magnetic triangular layer found in delafossite PdCrO 2 provides an excellent platform for discovering intriguing correlated quantum phenomena. Thin film growth of delafossites may enable not only the tuning of the basic physical properties beyond what bulk materials can exhibit, but also the development of novel hybrid materials by interfacing with dissimilar materials, yet this has proven to be extremely challenging. Here, we report the epitaxial growth of metallic delafossite PdCrO 2 films by pulsed laser epitaxy (PLE). The fundamental role of the PLE growth conditions, epitaxial strain, and chemical and structural characteristics of the substrate is investigated by growing under various growth conditions and on various types of substrates. While strain plays a large role in improving the crystallinity, the direct growth of epitaxial PdCrO 2 films without impurity phases was not successful. We attribute this difficulty to both the chemical and structural dissimilarities with the substrate and volatile nature of the PdO sublayer, which make nucleation of the right phase difficult. This difficulty was overcome by growing CuCrO 2 buffer layers before PdCrO 2 films were grown. Unlike PdCrO 2 , CuCrO 2 films were readily grown with a relatively wide growth window. Only a monolayer thick buffer layer was sufficient to grow the correct PdCrO 2 phase. This result indicates that the epitaxy of Pd-based delafossites is extremely sensitive to the chemistry and structure of the interface, necessitating near perfect substrate materials. The resulting films are commensurately strained and show an antiferromagnetic transition at 40 K that persists down to as thin as 3.6 nm in thickness. This work provides key insights into advancing the epitaxial growth of the broader class of metallic delafossites for both studying the basic physical properties and developing new spintronic and computing devices.
