New Record Ocean Temperatures and Related Climate Indicators in 2023

The global physical and biogeochemical environment has been substantially altered in response to increased atmospheric greenhouse gases from human activities. In 2023, the sea surface temperature (SST) and upper 2000 m ocean heat content (OHC) reached record highs. The 0–2000 m OHC in 2023 exceeded that of 2022 by 15 ± 10 ZJ (1 Zetta Joules = 10 21 Joules) (updated IAP/CAS data); 9 ± 5 ZJ (NCEI/NOAA data). The Tropical Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and southern oceans recorded their highest OHC observed since the 1950s. Associated with the onset of a strong El Niño, the global SST reached its record high in 2023 with an annual mean of ~0.23°C higher than 2022 and an astounding > 0.3°C above 2022 values for the second half of 2023. The density stratification and spatial temperature inhomogeneity indexes reached their highest values in 2023.

Integrated control of edge localized modes and divertor flux using mixed toroidal harmonic resonant magnetic perturbations in EAST

Mixed harmonic resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) for integrated edge localized modes (ELMs) and divertor flux control are demonstrated in EAST target plasmas of low input torque and normalized beta β N ~1.7–1.9, which are close to the equivalent value in ITER high Q operation. The applied RMPs are designed to combine a static harmonic of the toroidal mode number n = 3 with a static or rotating harmonic of n = 2. ELM suppression is achieved without a drop of plasma energy confinement, and tungsten concentration is effectively reduced during the application of RMPs. With mixed harmonics, the toroidal varying steady state heat and particle fluxes on the divertor target can be modified with the rotating n = 2 harmonic, which agrees with the numerical modeling of three-dimensional magnetic topology, with plasma responses being taken into account. ELM suppression correlates with the times of larger n = 3 response with mixed n = 2 and n = 3 RMPs. The mixture of harmonics and the rotating n = 2 harmonic does not require additional coil current because the variation is only in the upper-lower coil current phase space. Furthermore, these results further affirm the effectiveness of integrated ELM and divertor flux control using RMPs with mixed harmonics and improve the understanding of the role of plasma responses in ELM suppression.

Defect Recognition for Eddy Current Testing of Spent Nuclear Fuel Canister using Convolutional Neural Network

This paper proposes an accurate and robust defect detection solution for 304L and 306L stainless steel (SS) weld. In the proposed solution, Eddy current testing (ECT) is employed to generate 2-dimensional (2D) data for samples under test with defects. The 2D data can be treated as images for deep learning-based defect detection. Since convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are powerful in processing images, CNN is employed in this study for defect detection. Experiments are conducted on a submerged arc welding (SAW) 304L SS weld sample with an artificial crack generated by waterjet cutting. The ECT data on this seeded fault sample is utilized to verify the proposed solution. For this purpose, the ECT measurement are separated as from Fault area and Normal area, which are used for CNN training. After training, the testing data is used for verification. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed solution.

Long plasma duration operation analyses with an international multi-machine (tokamaks and stellarators) database

Combined high-fusion performance and long-pulse operation is one of the key integration challenges for fusion energy development in magnetic devices. Addressing these challenges requires an integrated vision of physics and engineering aspects with the purpose of simultaneously increasing time duration and fusion performance. Significant progress has been made in tokamaks and stellarators, including very recent achievement in duration and/or performance. This progress is reviewed by analyzing the experimental data (109 plasma pulses with a total of 3200 data points, i.e. on average 29 data per pulse) provided by ten tokamaks (in alphabetical order: Axially Symmetric Divertor Experiment Upgrade, DIII-D, Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak, Joint European Torus, JT-60 Upgrade, Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research, tokamak à configuration variable, Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor, Tore Supra, W Environment in Steady-State Tokamak) and two stellarators (Large Helical Device and Wendelstein 7-X) expanding the pioneering work of Kikuchi (Kikuchi M. and Azumi M. 2015 Frontiers in Fusion Research II: Introduction to Modern Tokamak Physics (Springer)). Data have been gathered up to January 2022 and coordination has been provided by the recently created International Energy Agency-International Atomic Energy Agency international Coordination on International Challenges on Long duration OPeration group. By exploiting the multi-machine international database, recent progress in terms of injected energies (e.g. 1730 MJ in L-mode, 425 MJ in H-mode), durations (1056 s in L-mode, 101 s in H-mode), injected powers, and sustained performance will be reviewed. Progress has been made to sustain long-pulse operation in tokamaks and stellarators with superconducting coils, actively cooled components, and/or with metallic walls. The graph of the fusion triple products as a function of duration shows a dramatic reduction of, at least two orders of magnitude when increasing the plasma duration from less than 1 s to 100 s. Indeed, long-pulse operation is usually reached in dominant electron-heating modes at reduced density (current drive optimization) but with low ion temperatures ranging from 1 to 3 keV for discharges above 100 s. Difficulties in extending the duration may arise from coupling high heating powers over long durations and the evolving plasma-wall interaction towards an unstable operational domain. Possible causes limiting the duration and critical issues to be addressed prior to ITER operation and DEMO design are reported and analyzed.

GenSLMs: Genome-scale language models reveal SARS-CoV-2 evolutionary dynamics

We seek to transform how new and emergent variants of pandemic-causing viruses, specifically SARS-CoV-2, are identified and classified. By adapting large language models (LLMs) for genomic data, we build genome-scale language models (GenSLMs) which can learn the evolutionary landscape of SARS-CoV-2 genomes. By pre-training on over 110 million prokaryotic gene sequences and fine-tuning a SARS-CoV-2-specific model on 1.5 million genomes, we show that GenSLMs can accurately and rapidly identify variants of concern. Thus, to our knowledge, GenSLMs represents one of the first whole-genome scale foundation models which can generalize to other prediction tasks. We demonstrate scaling of GenSLMs on GPU-based supercomputers and AI-hardware accelerators utilizing 1.63 Zettaflops in training runs with a sustained performance of 121 PFLOPS in mixed precision and peak of 850 PFLOPS. We present initial scientific insights from examining GenSLMs in tracking evolutionary dynamics of SARS-CoV-2, paving the path to realizing this on large biological data.

Electrostatic turbulence in EAST plasmas with internal transport barrier

Based on first-principles nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations, the electrostatic turbulence properties in the internal transport barrier (ITB) region of an Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak discharge (#93890) are investigated. Specifically, ITBs with steep density and temperature gradients are located in the weakly negative magnetic shear region at the plasma center. In the linear stage, the growth rate and frequency of the ion temperature gradient (ITG) mode increase significantly due to resonant excitation by trapped electrons. That is, the resonance between trapped electrons and the ITG becomes strong due to the precession drift reversal of trapped electrons by the negative magnetic shear and Shafranov shift. Meanwhile, the trapped electron mode is stable in the ITB region due to only a very small fraction of electrons precessing in the direction of the electron diamagnetic drift. Nonlinear simulations show that, after considering the non-adiabatic effect of trapped electrons, the heat conductivity of ions and the turbulence intensity increase by at least a factor of 7 compared with the results only considering the adiabatic effect of electrons. The zonal charge density of trapped electrons can partially cancel that of ions, which weakens the intensity of the zonal flow, and consequently reduces the zonal flow regulation and enhances the turbulent transport.

Plasma proteomics of SARS-CoV-2 infection and severity reveals impact on Alzheimer’s and coronary disease pathways

Identification of proteins dysregulated by COVID-19 infection is critically important for better understanding of its pathophysiology, building prognostic models, and identifying new targets. Plasma proteomic profiling of 4,301 proteins was performed in two independent datasets and tested for the association for three COVID-19 outcomes (infection, ventilation, and death). We identified 1,449 proteins consistently associated in both datasets with any of these three outcomes. We subsequently created highly accurate models that distinctively predict infection, ventilation, and death. These proteins were enriched in specific biological processes including cytokine signaling, Alzheimer’s disease, and coronary artery disease. Mendelian randomization and gene network analyses identified eight causal proteins and 141 highly connected hub proteins including 35 with known drug targets. Our findings provide distinctive prognostic biomarkers for two severe COVID-19 outcomes, reveal their relationship to Alzheimer’s disease and coronary artery disease, and identify potential therapeutic targets for COVID-19 outcomes.

A transfer learning approach for acoustic emission zonal localization on steel plate-like structure using numerical simulation and unsupervised domain adaptation

The detection and localization of damage in metallic structures using acoustic emission (AE) monitoring and artificial intelligence technology such as deep learning has been widely studied. However, a current challenge of this approach is the difficulty of obtaining sufficient labeled historical AE signals for the training process of deep learning models. This problem can be approached through the implementation of transfer learning. The innovation of this paper lies in the development of a transfer learning approach for AE source localization on a stainless-steel structure when no historical labeled AE signals are available for training. A finite element model is developed to generate numerical AE signals for the training. Unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) technology is utilized to reduce the distribution difference between the numerical and the realistic AE signals and to derive the localization results of the unlabeled realistic AE signals. Finally, the results suggest that the proposed approach is capable of localizing AE signals with high accuracy in the absence of labeled training data.

Another Year of Record Heat for the Oceans

Abstract Changes in ocean heat content (OHC), salinity, and stratification provide critical indicators for changes in Earth’s energy and water cycles. These cycles have been profoundly altered due to the emission of greenhouse gasses and other anthropogenic substances by human activities, driving pervasive changes in Earth’s climate system. In 2022, the world’s oceans, as given by OHC, were again the hottest in the historical record and exceeded the previous 2021 record maximum. According to IAP/CAS data, the 0–2000 m OHC in 2022 exceeded that of 2021 by 10.9 ± 8.3 ZJ (1 Zetta Joules = 10 21 Joules); and according to NCEI/NOAA data, by 9.1 ± 8.7 ZJ. Among seven regions, four basins (the North Pacific, North Atlantic, the Mediterranean Sea, and southern oceans) recorded their highest OHC since the 1950s. The salinity-contrast index, a quantification of the “salty gets saltier—fresh gets fresher” pattern, also reached its highest level on record in 2022, implying continued amplification of the global hydrological cycle. Regional OHC and salinity changes in 2022 were dominated by a strong La Niña event. Global upper-ocean stratification continued its increasing trend and was among the top seven in 2022.

Realization of thousand-second improved confinement plasma with Super I-mode in Tokamak EAST

Mastering nuclear fusion, which is an abundant, safe, and environmentally competitive energy, is a great challenge for humanity. Tokamak represents one of the most promising paths toward controlled fusion. Obtaining a high-performance, steady-state, and long-pulse plasma regime remains a critical issue. Recently, a big breakthrough in steady-state operation was made on the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST). A steady-state plasma with a world-record pulse length of 1056 s was obtained, where the density and the divertor peak heat flux were well controlled, with no core impurity accumulation, and a new high-confinement and self-organizing regime (Super I-mode = I-mode + e-ITB) was discovered and demonstrated. These achievements contribute to the integration of fusion plasma technology and physics, which is essential to operate next-step devices.

Olefin metathesis over supported MoO x catalysts: influence of the oxide support

Here, a series of supported MoO x catalysts on different oxide supports (Al2O3, TiO2, ZrO2, SiO2) were synthesized and investigated for propylene metathesis, characterized with in situ spectroscopies (DRIFTS, Raman, UV-vis) and chemically probed with propylene-TPSR-MS, propylene-TPSR-IR, and ethylene/2-butene titration. Under dehydrated conditions at monolayer coverage or maximum surface dispersion, the surface MoO x sites are present as a mixture of isolated di-oxo (O=) 2 Mo(–O–Al) 2 and oligomeric mono-oxo O=Mo(–O–Al) 4/5 sites on Al 2 O 3 , primarily oligomeric mono-oxo O=Mo(–O–Ti) 4/5 on TiO 2 , isolated di-oxo (O=) 2 Mo(–O–Zr) 2 and oligomeric mono-oxo O=Mo(–O–Zr) 4/5 on ZrO 2 , and isolated di-oxo (O=) 2 Mo(–O–Si) 2 on SiO 2 . The bridged (S 2 -OH) and tri-coordinated (S 3 -OH) anchoring surface hydroxyls of the oxide supports with strong support cation electronegativity control the activation and number of active surface MoO x sites at low temperatures (<100 °C). The isolated anchoring surface hydroxyls (S-OH) of the oxide supports with strong support cation electronegativity control the activation and number of active surface MoO x sites at high temperatures (>350 °C). Olefin metathesis by the more redox active supported MoO x /TiO 2 and MoO x /ZrO 2 catalysts is retarded by the formation of stable surface acetone and acetate species that block olefin adsorption. The oxide supports are potent ligands that tune the activation and surface chemistry of the surface MoOx sites for olefin metathesis. This is the first time that the influence of oxide supports on the activation and surface chemistry of supported MoO x sites has been systematically examined.

Measurement of muon-induced neutron yield at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory *

Abstract Solar, terrestrial, and supernova neutrino experiments are subject to muon-induced radioactive background. The China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL), with its unique advantage of a 2400 m rock coverage and long distance from nuclear power plants, is ideal for MeV-scale neutrino experiments. Using a 1-ton prototype detector of the Jinping Neutrino Experiment (JNE), we detected 343 high-energy cosmic-ray muons and (7.86 3.97) muon-induced neutrons from an 820.28-day dataset at the first phase of CJPL (CJPL-I). Based on the muon-induced neutrons, we measured the corresponding muon-induced neutron yield in a liquid scintillator to be μ −1 g −1 cm 2 at an average muon energy of 340 GeV. We provided the first study for such neutron background at CJPL. A global fit including this measurement shows a power-law coefficient of (0.75 0.02) for the dependence of the neutron yield at the liquid scintillator on muon energy.

Evidence of vapor shielding effect on heat flux loaded on flowing liquid lithium limiter in EAST

For this study, a lithium (Li) vapour layer was formed around a flowing liquid Li limiter to shield against the plasma incident power and reduce limiter heat flux in the EAST tokamak. The results revealed that after a plasma operation of a few seconds, the layer became clear, which indicated a strong Li emission with a decrease in the limiter surface temperature. This emission resulted in a dense vapour around the limiter, and Li ions moved along the magnetic field to form a green shielding layer on the limiter. The plasma heat flux loaded on the limiter, measured by the probe installed on the limiter, was approximately 52% lower than that detected by a fast-reciprocating probe at the same radial position without the limiter in EAST. Additionally, approximately 42% of the parallel heat flux was dissipated directly with the enhanced Li radiation in the discharge with the liquid metal infused trenches (LIMIT) limiter. This observation revealed that the Li vapour layer exhibited an excellent shielding effect to liquid Li on plasma heat flux, which is a possible benefit of liquid-plasma-facing components in future fusion devices.

Ligand-induced transmembrane conformational coupling in monomeric $\mathrm{EGFR}$

Single pass cell surface receptors regulate cellular processes by transmitting ligand-encoded signals across the plasma membrane via changes to their extracellular and intracellular conformations. This transmembrane signaling is generally initiated by ligand binding to the receptors in their monomeric form. While subsequent receptor-receptor interactions are established as key aspects of transmembrane signaling, the contribution of monomeric receptors has been challenging to isolate due to the complexity and ligand-dependence of these interactions. By combining membrane nanodiscs produced with cell-free expression, single-molecule Förster Resonance Energy Transfer measurements, and molecular dynamics simulations, we report that ligand binding induces intracellular conformational changes within monomeric, full-length epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Our observations establish the existence of extracellular/intracellular conformational coupling within a single receptor molecule. We implicate a series of electrostatic interactions in the conformational coupling and find the coupling is inhibited by targeted therapeutics and mutations that also inhibit phosphorylation in cells. Collectively, these results introduce a facile mechanism to link the extracellular and intracellular regions through the single transmembrane helix of monomeric EGFR, and raise the possibility that intramolecular transmembrane conformational changes upon ligand binding are common to single-pass membrane proteins.

EAST steady-state long pulse H-mode with core-edge integration for CFETR

Recent EAST experiment has successfully demonstrated long pulse steady-state high plasma performance scenario and core-edge integration since the last IAEA in 2018. A discharge with a duration over 60s with β P ~2.0, β N ~1.6, H 98y2 ~1.3 and internal transport barrier on electron temperature channel is obtained with multi-RF power heating and current drive. A higher β N (β N ~1.8, β p ~2.0, H 98y2 ~1.3, n e /n GW ~0.75) with a duration of 20s is achieved by using the modulated neutral beam and multi-RF power, where several normalized parameters are close or even higher than the phase III 1GW scenario of CFETR steady-state. High-Z impurity accumulation in the plasma core is well controlled in a low level by using the on-axis ECH. Modelling shows that the strong diffusion of TEM turbulence in the central region prevents tungsten impurity to accumulate. More recently, EAST has demonstrated compatible core-edge integration discharges in the high βp scenario: high confinement H 98y2 >1.2 with high β P ~2.5/β N ~2.0 and f bs ~50% is sustained with reduced divertor heat flux at high density n e /n GW ~0.7 and moderate q 95 ~6.7. By combining active impurity seeding through radiative divertor feedback control and strike point splitting induced by resonant perturbation coil, the peak heat flux is reduced by 20-30% on the ITER-like tungsten divertor, here a mixture of 50% neon and 50% D2 is applied.
