Grain Boundary‐Derived Cu + /Cu 0 Interfaces in CuO Nanosheets for Low Overpotential Carbon Dioxide Electroreduction to Ethylene

Abstract Electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction can be used to produce value‐added hydrocarbon fuels and chemicals by coupling with clean electrical energy. However, highly active, selective, and energy‐efficient CO 2 conversion to multicarbon hydrocarbons, such as C 2 H 4 , remains challenging because of the lack of efficient catalysts. Herein, an ultrasonication‐assisted electrodeposition strategy to synthesize CuO nanosheets for low‐overpotential CO 2 electroreduction to C 2 H 4 is reported. A high C 2 H 4 Faradaic efficiency of 62.5% is achieved over the CuO nanosheets at a small potential of −0.52 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode, corresponding to a record high half‐cell cathodic energy efficiency of 41%. The selectivity toward C 2 H 4 is maintained for over 60 h of continuous operation. The CuO nanosheets are prone to in situ restructuring during CO 2 reduction, forming abundant grain boundaries (GBs). Stable Cu + /Cu 0 interfaces are derived from the low‐coordinated Cu atoms in the reconstructed GB regions and act as highly active sites for CO 2 reduction at low overpotentials. In situ Raman spectroscopic analysis and density functional theory computation reveal that the Cu + /Cu 0 interfaces offer high *CO surface coverage and lower the activation energy barrier for *CO dimerization, which, in synergy, facilitates CO 2 reduction to C 2 H 4 at low overpotentials.

Switching CO 2 Electroreduction Selectivity Between C 1 and C 2 Hydrocarbons on Cu Gas-Diffusion Electrodes

We report that regulating the selectivity toward a target hydrocarbon product is still the focus of CO 2 electroreduction. Here, we discover that the original surface Cu species in Cu gas-diffusion electrodes plays a more important role than the surface roughness, local pH, and facet in governing the selectivity toward C 1 or C 2 hydrocarbons. The selectivity toward C 2 H 4 progressively increases, while CH 4 decreases steadily upon lowering the Cu oxidation species fraction. At a relatively low electrodeposition voltage of 1.5 V, the Cu gas-diffusion electrode with the highest Cu δ+ /Cu 0 ratio favors the pathways of hydrogenation to form CH 4 with maximum Faradaic efficiency of 65.4% and partial current density of 228 mA cm -2 at -0.83 V vs RHE. At 2.0 V, the Cu gas-diffusion electrode with the lowest Cu δ+ /Cu 0 ratio prefers C–C coupling to form C 2+ products with Faradaic efficiency topping 80.1% at -0.75 V vs RHE, where the Faradaic efficiency of C 2 H 4 accounts for 46.4% and the partial current density of C 2 H 4 achieves 279 mA cm -2 . This work demonstrates that the selectivity from CH 4 to C 2 H 4 is switchable by tuning surface Cu species composition of Cu gas-diffusion electrodes.

Planar defect-driven electrocatalysis of CO 2 -to-C 2 H 4 conversion

The selectivity towards a specific C 2+ product, such as ethylene (C 2 H 4 ), is sensitive to the surface structure of copper (Cu) catalysts in carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) electro-reduction. The fundamental understanding of such sensitivity can guide the development of advanced electrocatalysts, although it remains challenging at the atomic level. In this work, we demonstrated that planar defects, such as stacking faults, could drive the electrocatalysis of CO 2 -to-C 2 H 4 conversion with higher selectivity and productivity than Cu(100) facets in the intermediate potential region (–0.50 ~ –0.65 V vs. RHE). The unique right bipyramidal Cu nanocrystals containing a combination of (100) facets and a set of parallel planar defects delivered 67% faradaic efficiency (FE) for C 2 H 4 and a partial current density of 217 mA cm –2 at –0.63 V vs. RHE. In contrast, Cu nanocubes with exclusive (100) facets exhibited only 46% FE for C 2 H 4 and a partial current density of 87 mA cm –2 at an identical potential. Both ex situ CO temperature-programmed desorption and in situ Raman spectroscopy analysis implied that the stronger *CO adsorption on planar defect sites facilitates CO generation kinetics, which contributes to a higher surface coverage of *CO and in turn an enhanced reaction rate of C–C coupling towards C 2+ products, especially C 2 H 4 .

Growth differentiation factor-15 promotes immune escape of ovarian cancer via targeting CD44 in dendritic cells

Immune escape is the main cause of the low response rate to immunotherapy for cancer, including ovarian cancer. Growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) inhibits immune cell function. However, only few reports described the mechanism. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism of immune escape regulated by GDF-15 in ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer patients and healthy women were enrolled in this study. Immunohistochemistry and ELISA were performed to measure GDF-15 expression. Immunoprecipitation combined with mass spectrometry, surface plasmon resonance, and co-immunoprecipitation assay were used to evaluate the interaction between GDF-15 and the surface molecules of DCs. Immunofluorescence analysis, flow cytometry and transwell assay were used to evaluate additional effects of GDF-15 on DCs. The results showed that GDF-15 expression was higher in the ovarian cancer patients compared to that in the healthy women. The TIMER algorithm revealed that highly GDF-15 expression is associated with immune DC infiltration in immunoreactive high-grade serous carcinoma. A further study showed that GDF-15 suppressed DCs maturation, as well as IL-12p40 and TNF-α secretion, the length and number of protrusions and the migration. More importantly, CD44 in the surface of DCs interacted with GDF-15. The overexpression of CD44 in DCs resulted in the suppression of the inhibitory effect of GDF-15 on the length and number of DC synapses. In DCs overexpressing CD44 the inhibition of GDF-15 on the expression of CD11c, CD83 and CD86 was decreased, while in DCs with a knockdown of CD44 the inhibition was further enhanced. Knockdown of CD44 in DCs enhanced the inhibitory effect of GDF-15 on DC migration, while the overexpression of CD44 inhibited the inhibitory effect of GDF-15 on DC migration. In conclusion, the present study suggested that GDF-15 might facilitate ovarian cancer immune escape by interacting with CD44 in DCs to inhibit their function.
