Rationalization of the tensile creep behavior of the Nb45Ta25Ti15Hf15 bcc refractory complex concentrated alloy using Rao-Suzuki screw dislocation glide model

Published experimental tensile creep data for refractory body-centered cubic alloy Nb45Ta25Ti15Hf15 (NTTH) at temperatures ranging from 850–950 °C and applied tensile stresses 50–300 MPa are analyzed using the Rao-Suzuki screw dislocation glide model of solid solution strengthening. It is shown that the experimental creep data as well as transmission electron microscopy observations of post- creep deformation dislocation microstructure are in agreement with the model results. This suggests that the creep deformation of NTTH at 850–950 °C is controlled by screw dislocation glide.

Multiple origins of extra electron diffractions in fcc metals

Diffuse intensities in the electron diffraction patterns of concentrated face-centered cubic solid solutions have been widely attributed to chemical short-range order, although this connection has been recently questioned. This article explores the many nonordering origins of commonly reported features using a combination of experimental electron microscopy and multislice diffraction simulations, which suggest that diffuse intensities largely represent thermal and static displacement scattering. A number of observations may reflect additional contributions from planar defects, surface terminations incommensurate with bulk periodicity, or weaker dynamical effects.

Kink bands promote exceptional fracture resistance in a NbTaTiHf refractory medium-entropy alloy

Single-phase body-centered cubic (bcc) refractory medium- or high-entropy alloys can retain compressive strength at elevated temperatures but suffer from extremely low tensile ductility and fracture toughness. We examined the strength and fracture toughness of a bcc refractory alloy, NbTaTiHf, from 77 to 1473 kelvin. This alloy’s behavior differed from that of comparable systems by having fracture toughness over 253 MPa·m 1/2 , which we attribute to a dynamic competition between screw and edge dislocations in controlling the plasticity at a crack tip. Whereas the glide and intersection of screw and mixed dislocations promotes strain hardening controlling uniform deformation, the coordinated slip of <111> edge dislocations with {110} and {112} glide planes prolongs nonuniform strain through formation of kink bands. These bands suppress strain hardening by reorienting microscale bands of the crystal along directions of higher resolved shear stress and continually nucleate to accommodate localized strain and distribute damage away from a crack tip.

On the strength and fracture toughness of an additive manufactured CrCoNi medium-entropy alloy

An additively manufactured (nominally equiatomic) CrCoNi alloy was processed by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). At ambient temperatures (298 K), this medium-entropy alloy displayed a yield strength, σ y of ~691 ± 9 MPa, and an ultimate tensile strength, σ u of ~926 ± 15.2 MPa; at cryogenic temperatures (77 K), yield and tensile strengths increased respectively to σ y ~ 944 ± 6 MPa and σ u ~ 1382 ± 11 MPa. These strength levels are 57 and 44% higher than that of the wrought alloy, due to strengthening from the solidification cellular structures intertwined with dislocations in the LPBF CrCoNi. The crack-initiation fracture toughness, K JIc was measured to be ~183.7 ± 28 MPa√m at 298 K; this value marginally decreased by ~4% to ~176 ± 11 MPa√m at 77 K. These K JIc values of the LPBF CrCoNi were 11% and 35% lower than the wrought CrCoNi alloy at 298 K and 77 K, respectively. Here, the resistance to crack growth of the LPBF CrCoNi from its hierarchical micro- and meso-structures was evaluated using nonlinear-elastic fracture mechanics by measuring R-curve behavior in the form of the J-integral as a function of crack extension. The specific features of the hierarchical microstructures at different length-scales provide a basis for the strengthening and toughening properties of this additively manufactured medium-entropy alloy. This correlation between the deformation and the hierarchical microstructures at different length-scales may provide future guidance for improving the fracture toughness properties of medium-entropy alloys.

Optimization of the autoclave preparation process for improving resistant starch content in rice grains

Abstract The autoclave preparation process to increase the content of resistant starch (RS) in rice grains was optimized, and the results showed that the optimal preparation process was obtained with a water content of 41.63%, a pH of 5.95, an autoclave time of 60.96 min, and a refrigeration time of 17.11 hr. Under these conditions, the theoretical value of RS content in rice grains reached 17.57%. After autoclaving, the estimated glycemic index (EGI) in rice grains was reduced from 78.35 to 66.08 measured after cooking, suggesting that autoclaving was capable of increasing the RS content in rice grains and reducing its EGI value. These results may help spark new concepts and methods for the development of specialized foods for specific populations, such as people with diabetes.
