PFAS remediation: Evaluating the infrared spectra of complex gaseous mixtures to determine the efficacy of thermal decomposition of PFAS

Due to their widespread production and known environmental contamination, the need for the detection and remediation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has grown quickly. While destructive thermal treatment of PFAS at low temperatures (e.g., 200 to 500oC) is of interest due to lower energy and infrastructure requirements, the range of possible degradation products remains underexplored. To better understand the low temperature decomposition of PFAS species, we have coupled gas-phase infrared spectroscopy with a multivariate curve resolution (MCR) analysis and a database of high-resolution PFAS infrared reference spectra to detect and quantify a complex mixture resulting from potassium perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS-K) decomposition. Nine prevalent decomposition products (namely smaller perfluorocarbon species) are identified and quantified.

Stable bismuth-antimony alloy cathode with a conversion-dissolution/deposition mechanism for high-performance zinc batteries

Although a large number of intercalation cathode materials for aqueous Zn batteries have been reported, limited intercalation capacity precludes achieving a higher energy density. Here, for this work, we develop a high-performance aqueous Zn battery based on BiSb alloy (Bi 0.5 Sb 0.5 ) using a high-concentrated strong-basic polyelectrolyte. We demonstrate that a conversion-dissolution/deposition electrochemical mechanism (BiSb ↔ Bi + SbO 2 – ↔ Bi + SbO 3 – ↔ Bi 2 O 3 ) through in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, and ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) characterizations with the help of density functional theory calculations. The BiSb cathode delivers large capacity of 512 mAh g –1 at 0.3 Ag –1 and superior rate capability of 90 mAh g –1 even at 20 Ag –1 , and long-term cyclability with capacity retentions of 184 mAh g –1 after 600 cycles at 0.5 Ag –1 and 130 mAh g –1 after 1300 cycles at 1 Ag –1 . Remarkably, even at temperatures as low as –10 and –20 °C, capacities of 210 and 197 mAh g –1 are reserved at 1 Ag –1 , respectively. Moreover, the prepared pouch Zn//BiSb battery delivers a high energy density of 303 Wh kg –1 BiSb at 0.3 Ag –1 . When coupled with a high concentration polyelectrolyte, the Zn/BiSb battery exhibits an excellent performance over a wide temperature range (–40 to 40 °C). Our research reveals the metal cathode is promising for Zn batteries to achieve a high performance with the unique mechanism and alloys can be an effective approach to stabilize metal electrodes for cycling.

Development and evaluation of a Novel RT‐PCR system for reliable and rapid SARS‐CoV ‐2 screening of blood donations

Abstract Background The ongoing outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) has caused great global concerns. In contrast to SARS, some SARS‐CoV‐2–infected people can be asymptomatic or have only mild nonspecific symptoms. Furthermore, there is evidence that SARS‐CoV‐2 may be infectious during an asymptomatic incubation period. With the discovery that SARS‐CoV‐2 can be detected in plasma or serum, blood safety is worthy of consideration. Study Design and Methods We developed a nucleic acid test (NAT) screening system for SARS‐CoV‐2 targeting nucleocapsid protein (N) and open reading frame 1ab (ORF 1ab) gene that could screen 5076 samples every 24 hours. The 2019 novel coronavirus RNA standard was used to evaluate linearity of standard curves. Diagnostic sensitivity and reproducibility were evaluated using artificial SARS‐CoV‐2. Specificity was evaluated with 61 other respiratory pathogens. Diagnostic performance was evaluated by testing two sputum and nine oropharyngeal swab specimens. The reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT‐PCR) assay was used to screen SARS‐CoV‐2 RNA in blood donor specimens collected during the outbreak of SARS‐CoV‐2 in Chengdu. Results Limits of detection of the SARS‐CoV‐2 RT‐PCR assay for N and ORF 1ab gene were 12.5 and 27.58 copies/mL, respectively. Intra‐assay and interassay for the SARS‐CoV‐2 RT‐PCR assay based on cycle threshold were acceptably low. No cross‐reactivity was observed with other respiratory virus and bacterial isolates. The overall agreement value between the SARS‐CoV‐2 RT‐PCR assay and clinical diagnostic results was 100%. A total of 16 287 blood specimens collected from blood donors during SARS‐CoV‐2 surveillance were tested negative. Conclusions A high‐throughput NAT screening system was developed for SARS‐CoV‐2 screening of blood donations during the outbreak of SARS‐CoV‐2.
