Ab initio simulations on the pure Cr lattice stability at 0K: Verification with the Fe-Cr and Ni-Cr binary systems

Significant discrepancies have been observed and discussed on the lattice stability of Cr between the predictions from the ab initio calculations and the CALPHAD approach. In the current work, we carefully examined the possible structures for pure Cr and reviewed the history back from how Kaufman originally determined the Gibbs energy of FCC-Cr in the 1970s. The reliability of Cr lattice stability derived by the CALPHAD and ab initio approaches was systematically discussed. It is concluded that the Cr lattice stability based on the CALPHAD approach has large uncertainty. Meanwhile, we cannot claim that the ab initio H FCC-Cr is error-free as FCC-Cr is an unstable phase under ambient conditions. The present work shows that the ab initio HFCC-Cr can be a viable scientific approach. As both approaches have their limitations, the present work propose to integrate the ab initio results into the CALPHAD platform for the development of the next generation CALPHAD database. As a result, the Fe-Cr and Ni-Cr binary systems were chosen as two case studies demonstrating the capability to adopt the ab initio Cr lattice stability directly into the current CALPHAD database framework.

Ab Initio Modeling of fcc Fe-Co-Cr-Ni High Entropy Alloys with Full Composition Range

The Fe-Co-Cr-Ni quaternary system has been studied extensively in the past decade, not only because of the superior properties achieved like high tensile ductility and fracture toughness, but also it is the foundation for the development of FeCrCoNi-based HEAs. However, most of the investigations are mainly focusing on the equiatomic and semi-equiatomic compositions. The physical properties of non-equiatomic compositions are barely explored. In the current work, the ab initio approach is adopted to predict the lattice parameter, structure stabilities, elastic properties, and enthalpy of formations of fcc Fe-Cr-Co-Ni HEA single crystals with the special quasirandom structure (SQS) method. To expand the design of Fe-Co-Cr-Ni HEAs into a full composition range, the current simulations cover all the binaries, ternaries, and the whole quaternary system. The 2-D composition-property contour diagrams are created to show the physical properties in the ternary and quaternary systems. Furthermore, our investigation shows that the fcc alloys' lattice parameter increases with the addition of Fe and Cr and decreases with Ni and Co. In addition to the enthalpy of formation at o K, the shape distortion rate is proposed to be another essential parameter to evaluate crystal stability. The results show the addition of Cr would destabilize the fcc lattice and cause symmetry breaking. Finally, the result of Pugh’s ratio shows that most of the fcc alloys show ductile behavior (P > 1.75), especially for the alloys around Fe 3 Ni, FeCo, and Fe 2 NiCo (P > 2.5). The brittle behavior (P < 1.75) is located around Fe 3 Cr and Fe 2 CoCr. Meanwhile, Cr 2 NiCo and Cr 2 FeNiCo are considered promising compositions to be tried and verified experimentally because of the higher bulk modulus and moderate shear modulus.

The Fundamental Creep Behavior Model of Gr.91 Alloy by ICME Approach (Final Report)

The current project mainly focused on the fundamental creep cracking mechanism of the Grade 91 system during the operation conditions in the advanced technologies FE power plants and build the link among Composition-Processing Parameters-Phase Stability-Microstructure-Creep Resistance. A model based on computational thermodynamics and diffusion kinetics will be developed to provide guidance on how to improve the creep resistance of the alloy system. The PI mainly investigate the Gr.91 base alloy and weldment with the Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) approach. The long-term goal of the proposed program is to develop a model for creep and fatigue resistant alloys with different elemental systems, compositions, and processing parameters of weldment and heat-treatment. In addition, new creep and fatigue resistant alloys are to be designed based on the predictions from the model. The computational as well as experimental results include three sections: 1) The compositional optimization and secondary phases evaluation regarding the creep resistance in Grade 91 steel through the CALPHAD approach. In this section, the formation of the critical secondary phases, M23C6, MX and Z-phase were well predicted based on many conditions like the temperature as well as compositions. Meanwhile, the role of different alloying elements was also considered as they will directly affect the formation of the secondary phases mentioned above based on the compositional evolution of the alloying elements. 2) An investigation of Creep Resistance in Grade 91 Steel through Computational Thermodynamics. We systematically considered the evolution of the four critical temperatures, Ac3, Ac1, the threshold of M23C6 and Z-phase, on basis of the computational approach. Meanwhile, the equilibrium cooling as well as Scheil simulations were also considered to perform further predictions based on the different cooling rates. 3) Creep lifetime and microstructural evolution of the Grade 91 steel. In this part, mainly experimental approach was performed on the real creep test from the beginning of the commercial Gr.91 alloys. The alloys were normalized, tempered, welded (Gleeble) and PWHT and finally subjected to the creep lifetime analyses. Finally, all the samples after each process were further characterized based on the OM, XRD and SEM technique to draw final conclusions.

Finite Element Analysis and Techno-economic Modeling of Solar Silicon Molten Salt Electrolysis

A new process is presented for low-cost one-step production of pure solid silicon from natural quartzite by molten salt electrolysis. At a process temperature of 1100°C, a techno-economic model including detailed mass and energy balances estimates energy consumption below 15 kWh/kg, with operating cost of $\$1.74$/kg and capital cost around $\$10,500$ per t/a (tonne annually) of production capacity for a 160,000 t/a plant. Use of an inert solid oxide membrane anode results in a pure oxygen by-product and no direct emissions. As a result, finite element analysis estimates the current density distribution and total current to inform the design of slab-shaped solid silicon cathodes.

The Novel Hybrid Ab Initio Model of High-Performance Structural Alloys Design for Fossil Energy Power Plants

The current project developed a novel HT-CALPHAD/DFT approach, which can quickly design new high-performance structural alloys for the application of FE power plants. The PI will mainly take charge of high-throughput DFT simulations and computational thermodynamics of the selected multicomponent alloy systems for the FE power plant applications. At the end of the project, a novel hybrid model based on high throughput CALPHAD/DFT simulations and computational thermodynamics will be developed to provide guidance on how to identify multi-component new high-performance structural alloys with much less computational effort needed. It will address the extensive computation time needed for DFT on the new alloys design. In addition, it will also address the well-known headache of DFT, i.e. how to make the accurate prediction of the high-temperature equilibria. The novel hybrid model the PI proposed will not only be applied to the design of high-performance structural alloys in FE power plants but in many different applications, such as nuclear reactors. This hybrid modeling approach includes four sections: 1) HT-CALPHAD modeling of Al-Co-Cr-Ni-Fe system with FCC and BCC phase. In this section, 3561 non-equiatomic compositions were randomly generated in order to investigate the phase stability of single FCC and BCC phases. Meanwhile, we proposed a data screening procedure to screen out the good candidates within these compositions, considering the temperature range, average density, and melting temperature, etc. 2) Investigation of FCC-Cr lattice stability in Fe-Cr system. We systematically assessed the reliability of FCC-Cr lattice stability derived by DFT and CALPHAD approaches. Meanwhile, the Fe-Cr binary system was chosen as a case study to verify the Cr lattice stability obtained by both approaches. 3) High-throughput DFT modeling on elastic properties of Al-Co-Cr-Ni-Fe systems. We predicted and established the FCC quinary elastic constant database of the Al-Co-Cr-Fe-Ni systems at 0K by using special quasi-random structure (SQS) approach. The predictions will start with pure elements of Al-Co-Cr-Fe-Ni system and will be continued with binaries, ternaries, quaternaries, and finally the quinary compositions. 3) Modeling of temperature-dependent elastic properties in Al-Co-Cr-Ni-Fe systems. In this part, we predict the thermal expansion coefficient and elastic stiffness coefficient as a function of temperature by applying quasiharmonic approximation. With this approach, the elastic properties of HEAs at elevate temperature can be estimated.

Revisit the VEC rule in high entropy alloys (HEAs) with high-throughput CALPHAD approach and its applications for material design-A case study with Al–Co–Cr–Fe–Ni system

Valence electron concentration (VEC) was treated as a useful parameter to predict solid solution phases, and the VEC rule was proposed for high entropy alloys (HEAs). However, this empirical rule has its limitations, which restricts its applications for phase predictions in HEAs. In this paper, we revisited the empirical VEC rule with the HT-CALPHAD approach in the Al–Co–Cr–Fe–Ni system. Our investigation showed that more than 90% compositions are observed to have BCC structures when 5.7≤VEC≤7.2 and we got 100% FCC structures when VEC≥8.4. Meanwhile, we proposed a data screening procedure to classify and discover the new HEAs. The concepts of average density (ρHEA), highest BCC/FCC temperatures ($T$ $^{max}_{BCC/FCC}$), and temperature ranges (ΔT BCC/FCC ) were introduced as useful data screening criteria to down-screen the candidate alloy compositions for specific engineering applications. In the current work, we have identified three HEA categories (refractory BCC HEAs, light-weight BCC HEA and refractory FCC HEAs) in the Al–Co–Cr–Fe–Ni system and proposed the best candidate in each group. Here, our investigation showed the HEA non-equiatomic composition space provides ample opportunities for the discovery of the next-generation HEAs.

Synthesis, modular composition, and electrochemical properties of lamellar iron sulfides

Transition metal chalcogenides with layered structures are promising materials for energy storage, catalysis, and electronics, among other areas. We have identified a new layered phase of iron sulfide containing interlayer solvated cations. We present an optimized synthesis for the Li + -containing material from an Fe(III) xanthate complex. Structure and composition data indicate the material consists of poorly-ordered iron sulfide layers separated by solvated cations. The lamellar spacing in these materials can be tuned by changing the identity of the cation. Furthermore, the lamellar spacing can also be reversibly tuned by the degree of solvation of the material. The material is electrically conductive and can serve as a pseudocapacitor with comparable performance to commercial materials such as MnO 2 . Finally, these materials also show promise as lithium or sodium ion battery cathodes with good capacity and reversibility.

The compositional optimization and secondary phases evaluation regarding the creep resistance in Grade 91 steel through the CALPHAD approach

The critical secondary phases along with critical temperatures in regard to the creep resistance of Grade 91 steel alloy were evaluated in order to optimize the composition of the alloy to improve the creep resistance. The critical temperatures which are highlighted in this paper are Ac1 (the threshold temperature in which austinite begins to form), and Ac3 (the threshold temperature at which ferrite is fully transformed into austenite). Furthermore, optimization was presented through various Cr, V, Nb, and N concentrations in Gr.91 in relation to these critical temperatures and the mole fraction of M 23 C 6 , MX, and Z-Phase as critical secondary phases. Here, the results indicate that increasing V and Nb will increase MX stability, whereas decreasing Cr and N lead to a decrease in Z-Phase and M 23 C 6 stability, which may lead to an increased creep resistance of the material. Upon further analyzing the V, Nb, and N concentrations in Gr.91, results indicate that increasing Nb content in the steel can lead to an increased stability of Nb-rich MX2 carbide which can be used to replace Z-Phase in low N steels. Simulation results indicate that elimination of N with a dramatic increase in Nb concentrations result in the stability increase of only M 23 C 6 and MX2 phases at temperature regions between 600 °C and 1370 °C and a complete removal of Z-Phase precipitation. Overall, with the elimination of N, which destabilizes Z-Phase precipitation, and an increase in Nb for NbC carbide stability, a possible solution to increasing both long-term and short-term creep resistance for Gr.91 can be achieved, though further optimization and creep experiments need to be conducted for final conclusions.

Wafer-scale synthesis of monolayer two-dimensional porphyrin polymers for hybrid superlattices

The large-scale synthesis of high-quality thin films with extensive tunability derived from molecular building blocks will advance the development of artificial solids with designed functionalities. We report the synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) porphyrin polymer films with wafer-scale homogeneity in the ultimate limit of monolayer thickness by growing films at a sharp pentane/water interface, which allows the fabrication of their hybrid superlattices. Laminar assembly polymerization of porphyrin monomers could form monolayers of metal-organic frameworks with Cu 2+ linkers or covalent organic frameworks with terephthalaldehyde linkers. Both the lattice structures and optical properties of these 2D films were directly controlled by the molecular monomers and polymerization chemistries. The 2D polymers were used to fabricate arrays of hybrid superlattices with molybdenum disulfide that could be used in electrical capacitors.

Conjugated Macrocycles in Organic Electronics

This Account describes a body of research on the design, synthesis, and application of a new class of electronic materials made from conjugated macrocycles. Our macrocyclic design takes into consideration the useful attributes of fullerenes and what properties make fullerenes efficient n-type materials. We identified four electronic and structural elements: (1) a three-dimensional shape; (2) a conjugated and delocalized π-space; (3) the presence of an interior and exterior to the π-surface; and (4) low-energy unoccupied molecular orbitals allowing them to accept electrons. The macrocyclic design incorporates some of these properties, including a three-dimensional shape, an interior/exterior to the π-surface, and low-lying LUMOs maintaining the n-type semiconducting behavior, yet we also install synthetic flexibility in our approach in order to tune the properties further. Each of the macrocycles comprises perylenediimide cores wound together with linkers. The perylenediimide building block endows each macrocycle with the ability to accept electrons, while the synthetic flexibility to install different linkers allows us to create macrocycles with different electronic properties and sizes. We have created three macrocycles that all absorb well into the visible range of the solar spectrum and possess different shapes and sizes. We then use these materials in an array of applications that take advantage of their ability to function as n-type semiconductors, absorb in the visible range of the solar spectrum, and possess intramolecular cavities. This Account will discuss our progress in incorporating these new macrocycles in organic solar cells, organic photodetectors, organic field effect transistors, and sensors. The macrocycles outperform acyclic controls in organic solar cells. We find the more rigid macrocyclic structure results in less intrinsic charges and lower dark current in organic photodetectors. Our macrocyclic-based photodetector has the highest detectivity of non-fullerene acceptors. The macrocycles also function as sensors and are able to recognize nuanced differences in analytes. Perylenediimide-based fused oligomers are efficient materials in both organic solar cells and field effect transistors. Here, we will use the oligomers to construct macrocycles for use in solar energy conversion. In addition, we will incorporate different electron-rich linkers in our cycles in an attempt to engineer the HOMO/LUMO gap further. Looking further into the future, we envision opportunities in applying these conjugated macrocycles as electronic host/guest materials, as concatenated electronic materials by threading the macrocycles with electroactive oligomers, and as a locus for catalysis that is driven by light and electric fields.

FeN 4 Sites Embedded into Carbon Nanofiber Integrated with Electrochemically Exfoliated Graphene for Oxygen Evolution in Acidic Medium

Abstract Development of inexpensive and efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts in acidic environment is very challenging, but it is important for practical proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers. A molecular iron–nitrogen coordinated carbon nanofiber is developed, which is supported on an electrochemically exfoliated graphene (FeN 4 /NF/EG) electrocatalyst through carbonizing the precursor composed of iron ions absorbed on polyaniline‐electrodeposited EG. Benefitting from the unique 3D structure, the FeN 4 /NF/EG hybrid exhibits a low overpotential of ≈294 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for the OER in acidic electrolyte, which is much lower than that of commercial Ir/C catalysts (320 mV) as well as all previously reported acid transitional metal‐derived OER electrocatalysts. X‐ray absorption spectroscopy coupled with a designed poisoning experiment reveals that the molecular FeN 4 species are identified as active centers for the OER in acid. The first‐principles‐based calculations verify that the FeN 4 –doped carbon structure is capable of reducing the potential barriers and boosting the electrocatalytic OER activity in acid.
