Density fluctuation statistics and turbulence spreading at the edge of L–mode plasmas

Long-wavelength density fluctuations ($k{\rho _i}$ <1) are studied using beam emission spectroscopy (BES) at the edge of DIII-D L-mode plasmas (ρ = 0.88–1.1) in scenarios with electron cyclotron heating (ECH) power ramp (P ECH up to 1.5 MW), neutral beam injection (NBI) power ramp (P NBI up to 2.5 MW), and injected torque scan (-1 < T inj <0.6 Nm). We find that broadband turbulent density fluctuations (ƒ ~ 20–120 kHz) have a non-Gaussian distribution. The skewness of $\delta n/n$ changes sign from negative at ρ < 0.95–0.97 to positive at ρ > 0.97, indicating the prevalence of density 'voids' at inner radii and density 'blobs' at outer radii and outside of the separatrix. The turbulence intensity flux $\left\langle {{{\tilde v}_{\text{r}}}{{\tilde n}^2}} \right\rangle$ is calculated to characterize turbulence spreading at the plasma edge. During ECH/NBI power ramps and at counter-I p injected torque, $\left\langle {{{\tilde v}_{\text{r}}}{{\tilde n}^2}} \right\rangle$ is directed inward inside the separatrix, which is evidence of inward spreading of turbulence intensity from the edge gradient region caused by the inner propagation of density 'voids'. Significantly weaker $\left\langle {{{\tilde v}_{\text{r}}}{{\tilde n}^2}} \right\rangle$ is observed with co-I p torque. A correlation between co-I p torque, turbulence intensity $\delta n/n$ at ρ = 0.97, and increased srape-off layer (SOL) heat flux decay length ${\lambda _q}$ is found in the torque scan scenario, showing that edge turbulence plays a material role in determining the SOL conditions and heat flux width.

Development of a liquid-helium free cryogenic sample holder with mK temperature control for autonomous electron microscopy

The automated and autonomous cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) demands a sample holder capable of maintaining temperatures below 10 K with precise control, long holding times, and minimal helium use. Rising to this challenge, we initiated an ambitious project to develop a novel closed-cycle cryocooler-based cryogenic sample holder that operates without the use of liquid helium and the consumption of gaseous helium. Here, this article presents the design, construction, and experimental testing of the initial prototype, which achieves an ultimate temperature of 5.6 K with exceptional stability close to 1mK, while providing a wide temperature control range from 295 K to 5.6 K, marking a clear advancement in cryo-EM holder development. While the prototype was not designed for atomic resolution imaging and thus lacks a sturdy support system to mitigate mechanical vibrations from the cryocooler's pulsed tube, this innovative approach successfully demonstrates proof of concept. It offers unprecedented capabilities for state-of-the-art cryogenic microscopy and microanalysis in materials and biological sciences.

Isotope impact on Alfvén eigenmodes and fast ion transport in DIII-D

Abstract Measurements of beam driven Alfvén Eigenmode (AE) activity in matched deuterium (D) and hydrogen (H) DIII-D plasmas show a dramatic difference in unstable mode activity and fast ion transport for a given injected beam power. The dependence of the unstable AE spectrum in reversed magnetic shear plasmas on beam and thermal species is investigated in the current ramp by varying beam power in a sequence of discharges for fixed thermal and beam species at fixed density. In general, a spectrum of Reversed Shear Alfvén Eigenmodes (RSAEs) and Toroidal Alfvén Eigenmodes (TAEs) are driven unstable with sub-Alfvénic D beam injection while primarily only RSAEs are driven unstable for the H beam cases investigated. Further, for a given beam power, the driven AE amplitude is always reduced with H beams relative to D and for H thermal plasma relative to pure D or mixed D/H plasmas. Estimates of the fast ion stored energy combined with modeling using the hybrid kinetic-MHD code MEGA indicate that the dominant mechanism contributing to the difference between H and D beam drive is the faster classical slowing down of H beam ions relative to D and the resultant lower beam ion pressure. Calculations of the AE induced stored energy deficits using the reduced critical gradient model TGLFEP show quantitative agreement with the observed dependencies on injected power, isotope and minimum safety factor.

Relation between sampling, sensitivity and precision in strain mapping using the Geometric Phase Analysis method in Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy

The sensitivity and the precision of the Geometric Phase Analysis (GPA) method for strain characterization is a topic widely discussed in the literature and is usually difficult to quantify. Indeed, the GPA precision is intricately linked to the resolution of the strain maps defined when masking the periodic reflections in Fourier space. In this study an additional parameter, sampling, is proposed to be analyzed regarding the precision of GPA by developing the concept of a phase noise in the GPA equations. Both experimentally and theoretically, the following article demonstrates how the precision, and the sensitivity of the GPA method is improved when using a larger pixel spacing to record an electron micrograph in Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM). In conclusion, the counterintuitive concept of increasing the field of view to improve the GPA precision results in an extension of the application of strain characterization methods in STEM towards low deformation levels.

Vanishing RKKY interactions in Ce-based cage compounds

Abstract We report the results of thermodynamic measurements in external magnetic field of the cubic Ce-based cage compounds Ce T 2 Cd 20 ( T = Ni,Pd). Our analysis of the heat-capacity data shows that the Γ 7 doublet is the ground state multiplet of the Ce 3+ ions. Consequently, for the Γ 7 doublet it can be theoretically shown that the Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida interaction between the localized Ce moments mediated by the conduction electrons, must vanish at temperatures much lower than the energy separating the ground state doublet from the first excited Γ 8 quartet. Our findings provide an insight as to why no long range order has been observed in these compounds down to temperatures in the milliKelvin range.

Rising Temperatures Reduce Global Wheat Production

Crop models are essential tools for assessing the threat of climate change to local and global food production. Present models used to predict wheat grain yield are highly uncertain when simulating how crops respond to temperature. Here we systematically tested 30 different wheat crop models of the Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project against field experiments in which growing season mean temperatures ranged from 15 degrees C to 32◦ degrees C, including experiments with artificial heating. Many models simulated yields well, but were less accurate at higher temperatures. The model ensemble median was consistently more accurate in simulating the crop temperature response than any single model, regardless of the input information used. Extrapolating the model ensemble temperature response indicates that warming is already slowing yield gains at a majority of wheat-growing locations. Global wheat production is estimated to fall by 6% for each degree C of further temperature increase and become more variable over space and time.

On the measurement of lateral velocity derivatives in turbulent flows

Direct numerical simulation data for the lateral velocity derivative delta(u)/delta(y) at the centerline of a fully developed turbulent channel flow provide reasonable support for Wyngaard's analysis of the error involved in measuring this quantity using parallel hot wires. Numerical data in the wall region of the channel flow also provide a useful indication of how to select the separation between the wires. Justification for this choice is obtained by comparing several measured statistics of delta(u)/delta(y) with the corresponding numerical data.
