Effect of molecular permanent dipole moment on guest aggregation and exciton quenching in phosphorescent organic light emitting diodes

This study explores the effect of molecular permanent dipole moment (PDM) on aggregation of guest molecules in phosphorescent host–guest organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Through a combination of photoluminescence measurements, high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis, and an Ising model based physical vapor-deposition simulation, we show that higher PDM of tris[2-phenylpyridinato-C2,N]iridium(III) guest can actually lead to a reduced aggregation relative to tris[bis[2-(2-pyridinyl-N)phenyl-C] (acetylacetonato)iridium(III) when doped into a non-polar host 1,3,5-tris(carbazol-9-yl)benzene. This study further explores the effect of host polarity by using a polar host 3′,5′-di(carbazol-9-yl)-[1,1′-biphenyl]-3,5-dicarbonitrile, and it is shown that the polar host leads to reduced guest aggregation. In conclusion, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of the impact of molecular PDM on OLED material efficiency and stability, providing insights for optimizing phosphorescent OLED materials.

Modeling the Impacts of Material Properties on Oscillatory Neuron Behavior

In this study, neuromorphic computing, which mimics the functions of biological brains, offers improvements in both latency and energy efficiency over typical von Neumann computing architectures. Spiking neural networks can be especially power-efficient because they encode information temporally and can use more sparse electrical inputs. Here, we study the design of volatile memristors (variable resistors with memory) for neuronal devices, with particular consideration toward the feasibility of all-on-chip oscillation using built-in capacitance. We use circuit simulations to model the behavior of oscillator neurons with a range of realistic material properties. We find that energy inputs increase with insulating-phase resistivity, thermal conductivity, and device aspect ratio. However, we also find that the minimum capacitance needed for oscillation decreases with increasing insulating-phase resistivity, which opposes the constraints for power efficiency. Based on published data on NbO 2 , VO 2 , and EuNiO 3 , we find that existing materials can be engineered for all-on-chip spiking using their parasitic capacitance.

Organic photosensitive devices made using semi-orthogonal solvents and methods of making the same

Disclosed herein are organic photosensitive optoelectronic device comprising a first layer comprising one or more of a first layer material, a second layer comprising one or more of a second layer material, and a third layer comprising one or more of a third layer material. The second layer may be dissolved in a semi-orthogonal solvent. The first layer and the third layer may be very slightly soluble or practically insoluble in the semi-orthogonal solvent.

Cluster characterization in atom probe tomography: Machine learning using multiple summary functions

In this work, we develop a machine learning-based method to characterize intracluster concentration (ρ c ), background concentration (ρ b ), clustering radius (r̄), and radius dispersity (δ r ) in simulated atom probe tomography data using multiple spatial statistics summary functions to train a Bayesian regularized neural network. Here, we build upon previous work that utilized Ripley’s K-function by incorporating additional features from nearest-neighbor spatial statistics summary functions to better characterize concentration-based metrics. The addition of nearest-neighbor based features allows for highly accurate estimates of ρ c and ρ b , both with 90% of the predictions within 4.0% of the real value; the root-mean-square errors are reduced by 81.5% and 92.8% from predictions using only K-function based features, respectively. Additionally, including these nearest-neighbor based features improves the ability to differentiate between r̄ and δ r .
