Abstract
Theseparationofspacecraftcomponents,whichoccurineveryflight,representscrucialandmajoreventsthatmustbesuccessfullyexecutedtofulfillmissionrequirements.Separationsystemsvaryaswidelyinphysicalandfunctionalpropertiesastheperformancerequirementswhichtheymustsatisfy;however,mostsystemsusehelicalcompressionspringsasanenergysource.Thispapersummarizestheprincipaldesigncharacteristicsofseparationmechanismsandempiricaldataobtainedfromactualseparationsinspace.
